DAMIEN MOLONY TO APPEAR IN E4 COMEDY DRAMA
Permalink

Damien appeared on the drama panel for 'Clean Break' at the RTÉ new season launch today.

In the video below he says:

"I am about to start a comedy for E4 next month"

??????!!!!!!!!!

update: video no longer available, rough transcript below

I am based in the UK and this is the first time I have worked for RTE, it was amazing, we came back to Dublin, in October I think , shot a huge amount in Hoagh [?], which mirrors very well for Wexford and then we shot 3 weeks in Wexford which was like a holiday, obviously it was a brilliant time.
I have been based in the UK for the last 4 years, I went to drama school there, I've done a huge amount of theatre there, and I've got a couple of films coming out this year, one actually with Brian (gestures to Brian), we were in the desert in Jordan last August tearing around and sweating which was a huge amount of fun, which should be out later this year and I'm about to start a comedy for E4 next month

This has also been confirmed by an article in TheJournal.ie

"Molony has just finished doing a play in the National Theatre, and has a new comedy on E4 starting on Monday."

(Although, we think this means he is beginning filming on Monday.)

Let the speculation begin!

cool

DAMIEN MOLONY TO APPEAR IN E4 COMEDY DRAMA?

So.. presuming I am not allucinating and Damien is soon to be filming in an E4 comedy, what could it be?

Unless it is a new series of an existing show (?) looking at all the Channel 4 / E4 shows announced this year, there are 2 new sci-fi comedies: 'Tripped' which already has casting announced and 'Aliens':

Aliens have landed... on E4

The aliens are here. In fact, they’ve been here for the last 40 years. But though they walk like us, talk like us and look like us, they’re not allowed to live with us. All aliens are forced to live behind a huge wall in a in a segregated community called Troy; a ramshackle and hedonistic ghetto where a criminal sub-culture thrives. It’s a world of mystery, danger and forbidden pleasures.

But when mild-mannered human Lewis, a border control guard at the wall’s check-point, discovers that he is half-alien, his secret threatens to turn his world upside down as he is drawn into the dark underbelly of Troy.

Written by Fintan Ryan (Never Better, In The Flesh), Aliens (6 x 60’) is produced by Clerkenwell Films (MisfitsScrotal Recall, Not Safe For Work) and will begin filming later this year.

Roberto Troni, commissioner at Channel 4, says: “Scabrously funny, shockingly violent and at times positively hallucinogenic, Aliens is a wry and riotous adventure into a world that is at once entirely familiar and absolutely strange. It’s a culture clash, a gangster epic, but fundamentally it is an all too human search for acceptance and identity.”

Executive Producer at Clerkenwell Films Petra Fried says: “In Aliens, Fintan Ryan has created a world that mixes social commentary, crime genre and comedy in a new and exciting way.”

Fintan Ryan, writer, adds: “Clerkenwell is the only company capable of making this show, E4 is the only place they’d let us make it. This is going to be good.”

Commissioned by Piers Wenger, Head of Drama for Channel 4, and Roberto Troni, Commissioner at Channel 4, and made by Clerkenwell Films, Aliens will TX on E4 in 2016. Charlie Leech is Producer and Executive Producers for Clerkenwell Films are Petra Fried, Matt Jarvis and Murray Ferguson.

He definitely says he's about to start a comedy for E4. I love that he mixes his work up and shock horror! we actually know about something BEFORE he films it! He's slipping.

Awesome!  We get a bit that he slides in to Suspects but I miss Damien and comedy.

Yes this will be the first comedy drama since Being Human!

Cannot wait to find out what the drama is! Aliens was just a random guess based on E4s upcoming slate.

Oh yes! Comedy! He will surprise everyone with how good he is. Not just moody, intense men, but funny characters too!
He had some funny moments in The Hard Problem. Wasn't there a bit of humor in Travelling Light? And BOAA?

Definitely a touch of humour in Travelling Light and THP TJ, but neither could be defined as a comedy perhaps?!
This is Damien's first comedy TV role since BH. Which sometimes people forget was a comedy drama!

So whatever it is, Damien starts filming next month. Hope for an announcement soon then!

The funny bits of Being Human are some of my favorites. An comedy, labeled just that, will be a change. I like that he doesn't pigeonhole himself.

I don't get to see the plays so the only humor I've seen from him is the little bits he's thrown into Suspects.

Yes, he definitely said that he was about "to start a comedy with E4". Well done for finding the clip and the info about Aliens. It definitely sounds a possibility - perhaps he will play the half-alien border guard!

Being Human was funny too though, Jane. In a proper laugh out loud kinda way. So we absolutely know he can do comedy. The 'Reach for the Stars' extra scene still makes me giggle just thinking about it (looking foward to Damien's comedy gold on the dance floor in KYF so much!)

Didn't he do a read-through for a tv comedy some time ago?  I have a vague recollection that Robert Sheenan ended up with the part?  Which suggests that it's something that he's been interested in doing for a while.....although - as becca said - he does seem to like to mix it up. (definintely slipping, becca!)

I do rather like the look of Aliens......and it has that 'it looks different' quality which Damien seems to be attracted to......

Parts of Being Human were hilarious but I think there was laughter and tears in equal measure ! Damien's witty lines in Suspects are just classic ! He even managed some humour with Flight.

Damien's expressions and gestures can make me chuckle. I saw The Hard Problem twice and noticed further into run found comic parts, even by how giving lines....

How about "Crashing". A six-part 30 min sitcom. Announced in Feb for summer filming, it's still showing 'in production' and doesn't have a cast listed. Sounds a bit like Being Human in the 'living together' situation.  He's yet to do a sitcom, but I can see him tapped for this because of the similarity in the story of navigating a flat share situation.

http://www.comedy.co.uk/guide/tv/crashing/details/

(Sorry can't do hyperlink on phone)

Written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Broadchurch, Bad Education, Fleabag), and produced by the award-winning Big Talk Productions (Friday Night Dinner, Him & Her), CRASHING crashes straight into the lives and loves of six twenty-to-thirty-something adults living together as Property Guardians in a disused hospital.

It's about that time in your life when the reality of being an adult kicks you hard in the crotch. This time you’re not someone’s kid, you’re not a student, and you’re not fresh out of uni. This time you’re a grown up.

In an age of unaffordable housing and sky-high rents, becoming a Property Guardian has never been so appealing, with thousands of people paying as little as £25 a week to live in unoccupied buildings in exchange for 'protecting' the property from disrepair. Just imagine waking up every morning in your own historic building in the most exciting city in the world. Even if it is an enormous, creepy, derelict hospital.

Phoebe Waller Bridge said: ‘It’s an absolute dream to be writing for such a sexy, funny, groundbreaking channel. I’m over the moon that they’ve let this naughty little gang of characters into the fold.’

The series will go into production in London over the summer to broadcast next year.

A sit com would be an interesting proposition. The writing and production team have good pedigrees.

E4 COMMISSIONS ‘CRASHING’ COMEDY

E4 today announces a brand new 6 x 30 comedy ‘CRASHING’ from multi-award winning actress and playwright Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Broadchurch, Drifters, Fleabag), and produced by the award-winning Big Talk Productions (Friday Night Dinner, Him & Her), CRASHING crashes straight into the lives of six twenty-to-thirty-something adults living together as Property Guardians in a disused hospital.

It’s about that time in your life when ‘having potential’ can no longer be considered a great achievement, and the reality of being an adult kicks you hard in the crotch. This time you’re not someone’s kid, you’re not a student, and you’re not fresh out of uni,. This time you’re on your own.

In an age of unaffordable housing and sky-high rents, becoming a Property Guardian has never been so appealing, with thousands of people paying as little as £25 a week to live in unoccupied buildings in exchange for ‘protecting’ the property from disrepair. Just imagine waking up every morning in your own historic building in the most exciting city in the world. Even if it is an enormous, creepy, derelict hospital.

As a writer, Phoebe Waller-Bridge enjoyed incredible success at the 2013 EdFringe Festival where her one-woman show FLEABAG played to sell-out audiences and rave reviews, garnering a Fringe First Award and The Stage Award for Best Solo Performance. She has also been nominated for Most Promising New Playwright at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. Her acting TV credits include Broadchurch, Henry, Bad Education and The Café and film credits include Albert Nobbs and The Iron Lady.

CRASHING was commissioned by Channel 4 Comedy Commissioning Editor, Rachel Springett and will be executive produced by Big Talk Chief Executive, Kenton Allen. The series is being produced by Josh Cole.

Channel 4 Comedy Commissioning Editor, Rachel Springett said: “Phoebe is such extraordinary new talent both as writer and performer. We are thrilled to be making her first ever sitcom on the Channel and we look forward to unleashing her unique voice and humour onto the world!”

Kenton Allen, Chief Executive at Big Talk Productions added ‘We’re thrilled to be working with the phenomenally talented Phoebe on her first TV series. She is at the forefront of the next generation of female writer/performers and has a unique comic voice so we can’t wait to breathe life into her fabulous scripts.’

Broadchurch actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write and star in her own E4 comedy

By Ben Dowell

Thursday 12 February 2015 at 12:40PM

Broadchurch actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge it to write and star in her own E4 comedy.

Waller-Bridge, whose character Abby Thompson is currently attempting to clear murder suspect Joe Miller in the ITV drama, will play one of six main characters in Crashing.

The rest of the cast is yet to be announced, but we do know that the comedy will focus on a group of so-called property guardians in their 20s and 30s – people who house sit for the wealthy to prevent their homes being damaged or invaded by squatters.

The vogue for property guardianship has risen in an age when living space has become increasingly unaffordable for the young but an investment for often absent owners. The characters in Crashing will occupy a large disused hospital.

“It's about that time in your life when the reality of being an adult kicks you hard in the crotch," said a statement from E4. "This time you’re not someone’s kid, you’re not a student, and you’re not fresh out of uni. This time you’re a grown up.

“In an age of unaffordable housing and sky-high rents, becoming a property guardian has never been so appealing, with thousands of people paying as little as £25 a week to live in unoccupied buildings in exchange for 'protecting' the property from disrepair. Just imagine waking up every morning in your own historic building in the most exciting city in the world. Even if it is an enormous, creepy, derelict hospital."

It is the first TV writing commission for Waller-Bridge who has written her own stage plays before.

She said: ‘It’s an absolute dream to be writing for such a sexy, funny, groundbreaking channel. I’m over the moon that they’ve let this naughty little gang of characters into the fold."

Channel 4's comedy commissioning editor Rachel Springett said: “Phoebe is such an extraordinary new writer/performer talent. We are thrilled to be making her first ever sitcom on the channel and we look forward to unleashing her unique voice and humour onto the world.”

Kenton Allen, chief executive at Big Talk Productions (the team behindRev) which is making the comedy, said: "We’re thrilled to be working with the phenomenally talented Phoebe on her first TV series.... we can’t wait to breathe life into her fabulous scripts."

The series will go into production in London over the summer to broadcast in 2016.

Yup I saw all that. I just copied over what I thought was most relevant.

TBH, I would much rather it's Aliens as it sounds more edgy (which is right up my alley) than Crashing. And 60 min (comedy) drama rather than 30 min sitcom. I don't usually care for sitcoms.

Both have their merits, I love sci fi drama in general and the writing team behind Aliens co wrote In The Flesh, and has the same makes as Misfits, which as we know became incredibly popular, and as you say they are hour long episodes. Crashing seems like a cool premise and as you say Rosie, high calibre team behind that. Could be something else entirely... let's hope we find out soooooon!
