Here's a bit more of a detailed preview for episode 2! (spoilers!) With a couple of new photos.

JACK IS BACK! Secrets, Surprises and Subterfuge: Suspects Series 5 Episode 2 Preview

Jack is back on Wednesday and we have a sneak peek of Suspects Series 5 Episode 2!

Suspects Series 5 premiered last week, launching with the gripping and shocking storyline of DI Martha Bellamy’s fatal shooting.

Our top cop show returned with a new cast line-up and a developed format – a longer series with just the one key storyline extending across six episodes and a slightly closer look at the detectives’ personal lives.

The series opener saw Jack Weston right in the centre of the investigation and being personally involved with the case in more ways than one. Martha’s killing is revealed to be a blackmail case and her husband was also found killed. When Jack suspects his ex-girlfriend Rose Harris’s (Karen Hassan) new partner Stan Turner (Sam Stockman) is the prime suspect, Jack himself became the victim of blackmail. Turning to new boss DCI Daniel Drummond (James Murray) for help, a twist ending revealed DCI Dan was already involved in more corrupt ways, and could in fact have set Jack up.

The story continues in episode 2 of the six-part series on Wednesday, and from the look of the synopsis and trailer (below), lines become even more blurred for Jack and the team.

As another murder uncovers further connections to the central case, Jack, DC Charlie Steele (Clare-Hope Ashitey) and new TDC Gary Roscoe (Perry Fitzpatrick) increase their efforts to get the evidence they need to nail the perpetrator. Jack faces secrets and surprises from the past and an ever-shadier DI Drummond employs strategies and subterfuge obstructive to the case.

Check out the synopsis and trailer below. (Spoilers alert!)

Suspects Series 5 Episode 2 Synopsis

When a murder victim is found to be connected to the Bellamy blackmail case, Jack goes out on a limb. The new victim is a young woman named Jasmine, who is found washed up on the riverbank. Charlie is sure that she was connected to the blackmailing of Martha’s husband, so Jack focuses on Stan Turner, the prime suspect for Martha’s death. Stan is not talking, but his girlfriend Rose seems a bit more helpful, although she is too terrified to testify. In search of connections, Jack and Charlie want to reopen the Martha Bellamy case, but DCI Drummond vetoes it. Frustrated, Jack pushes Rose too far.

Suspects Series 5 returns for episode 2 Wednesday 10 August 10pm on Channel 5.

I'm all over the place after this episode!! I'm really not sure what to think about Jack's reaction to finding out about Lucy. I think I need more time to process it all!

I decided to watch this episode sober. Unlike last week. I think the booze clouded my judgement. Cause wow... Just wow. That really was something special!
I don't know how I feel about Jack finding out about having a Daughter.
And how he used meeting her for the first time as a way to catch her mum.
I'm a little frazzled. I think I need a re-watch and to let it all soak in!
Loved it though. smile

And we had Jack Sass very early on!
"That's what I get paid for yeah."

Just tweeted Damien that I'm changing #JackSass to #JackAss for his treatment of Rose and Lucy.  This is the first episode I've not liked Jack at all, and I'm not sure I like how they've shown how the DCI is carrying on with the murderers.  Last week someone mentioned that a bit of the twisty-turny aspect of the show is compromised by showing us what's going on outside of the detective's investigation.  I didn't really feel it last week, but this time I did.  Sure, Lucy was a bombshell, but a bit anticlimactic with Jack's reactions, and so I didn't really feel the tension this week.  I did not see spoilers ahead of time, but as soon as Lucy said she was Rose's daughter, I saw it coming, so maybe that contributed to the anticlimactic feel.  Also, one of the key things about Jack that has made him compelling in the past series is how personal he takes things.  He's emotionally invested. He's usually like a dog going after a bone.  I am not pleased at all about his stoicism over Martha's murder and now with news that he could very well be a father.  Not buying the whole "use your police training to turn off that part of your brain" bit.  These are the two most personal happenings in his life so far, and he's reacted far less than the cases which were about strangers.  And another thing, he's been like a good little puppy with the new DCI.  Apologetic, in-line.  That's not Jack.  He should be pushing buttons, stretching the boundaries. If he doesn't show some explosive reaction soon, I'll be very disappointed.  I'm going to wait to actually vote until I have a rewatch tonight and see what the hubby thinks.

I wonder if when it really is personal with Jack that the only way he has of coping is to shut down emotionally. It seemed to me that perhaps he was a little sceptical that Lucy was his daughter. There are 4 more episodes so I think we're going to see a lot more of Jack and more of the Jack we know and love.

Such an intense episode! An hour on and I'm still feeling messy and restless! I always feel this show so viscerally!

The investigation storyline itself is harrowing, with the new developments Martha's killing is feeling more and more tragic.

So many gasp moments in this ep. Jack aside, what about DCI Drummond?! OMG! Anyone else feeling protective of the team we know and love? What have the two brothers got over him, is he being blackmailed too? I hope they not only discover the snake he is soon but also have enough evidence to do something about it... and that it doesn't all turn around on them.. Jack especially.

What about when Charlie almost followed up on the gun?!

I actually feel like Jack is barely holding it together. Trying to keep his focus going to catch Martha's killer while his old world shifts beneath his feet. The twist when he used his meeting his daughter to arrest Rose at first seemed pretty unforgiveable, but like you Rosie I wonder if it was because he doubts Rose is telling him the truth, as she's lied about everything else. Was there an element of duty of care to Lucy in there too, as Rose is clearly dangerous. The means to the end was harsh but was it the only way to get Lucy out of danger, if Rose was about to make them disappear?

We've not really talked about the Rose covering for Jack thing.. tonight she said she did 3 years inside for him?!?! I like the way they wove in Jack's brother (who we found out about in season 2 on that case with Saul) into why he disappeared from Rose's life.

I've said this before, but I don't want Suspects to lose its USP about being case focussed. I do like the golden nuggets of back story and a little bit of personal life but I hope it doesn't slide into full on personal drama. The fact that it doesn't is what makes it special and unique and stands it apart from all other shows. It's also what gives it the edge of the seat absorbtion into the case and what makes the few nuggets we get precious because they are rare and undiluted.

Did you all catch the 'next time' preview and what Charlie said about Jack losing his job?!?! It's going to come down to Drummond or Jack - please not Jack!!!

A really intense programme, had to watch it twice to process it all.

I found Jack's reaction to the news he could be a father understandable - he looked stunned. My feelings when he arranged to meet Rose and Lucy were "No, she's a murderer and child abductor, how can you want to meet her then let her get away" so I actually cheered when he used it as a trap. He did keep Lucy safe while her mother was being arrested. If I were Jack I would also want dna testing to see if Lucy were mine. I know Irish gossip - believe me, just because Jack left the place when he was young didn't mean other people didn't know the girl he hung around with was pregnant, especially as she kept the baby - her being in prison would just be icing on the cake. I was wondering if there was a break in continuity there, as I had the impression Jack was older than 16 when he left home, but a whiff of scandal would explain hIm joining the police rather than the garda.. Three years was quite a long time for drug pushing at 16, so it must have been the hard stuff or there was something we don't know about. Jack did tell Charlie to watch out where Rose was concerned, that she liked messing with people's heads.
I'm liking Roscoe, and Drummond is a good baddy, but I'm actually finding Lenora rather bland.
My main worry now is the original team, I hope they don't get pushed out and replaced with the new one. I was told by a friend that she'd seen that Charlie got killed and Jack was kicked out, but I'm hoping she is wrong and confusing Martha and Charlie and Jack stays on.
I suppose the extra involvement of their private lives is integral to the plot, as we've only really seen those parts that impinge on the case.

I'm not sure how I feel about that ep tbh.  I probably need a rewatch, but there are so many things which didn't properly gel for me.

Like whimsy I guessed straight off that Lucy was Jack's daughter, but then I doubted it......and then thought she must be - why else would Rose have turned up for them to meet?  I'd assumed that she'd left because Stan was abusing her....and can't see how they jumped to the conclusion that she was guilty.  Considering that she'd apparently tried to frame Stan, and they didn't seem to have any evidence against her,  she confessed gobsmakingly quickly.....or did I miss something??  We've repeatedly been reminded that Rose did time to protect Jack.......I can't help wondering who she might be protecting now.......  Or am I overthinking this?

Lucy got over the idea that her mum was a murderer and child trafficker alarmingly quickly - "I really hoped it wasn't true"??!  And they apparently let a 16yr old whose mum they'd got in custody - and whose only home appeared to be with the prime suspect for the murder of a police officer who'd also been abusing her mother - just walk out of the police station.... Wtf happened to 'duty of care'?!

I must admit when they ran out to arrest Rose I did shout 'you total shit' at Jack.  And I agree with whimsy that it seems a little out of character that he's not more dogged in his attempt to catch Martha's killer.....but on the other hand - after last week's fuck up he's walking a pretty fine line. And I'm not sure how I'd expect him to react to finding out he's got a 16 yr old daughter......lost for words seems as appropriate a response as any other....

I love how much debate this episode has created! It just shows the quality of this show that we are so drawn into it. I have a feeling that this might be a pivotal episode this series. Jack has been keeping his cool far too well so far and it's surely only a matter of time before things are going to spill over in a big way.

I've watched it now and really enjoyed the show. Obviously there are bits which are odd as mentioned above but it was much better than I expected from all your comments.

One thing I wonder about is perhaps Jack is being written out of the programme. This would be a shame as he is a pivotal character and it wouldn't be the same without him - just another cop show. However, with Damien's career taking off, he might not have the time to film Suspects in future.

My worry, too, Pearl - especially with all the publicity and interviews surrounding the new cast. I was wondering if Faye leaving was the impetus for a new cast and this series will see their slotting into the roles. They seem to be giving Jack a reason for wanting a more stable life, if indeed he does have a daughter!

It would definitely be a shame if Jack was written off some how. (Hopefully not by death. I hate it when characters quite literally get killed off.)
Even if Jack wasn't played by Damien, I feel Jack is such an important part of the show... It really wouldn't be the same without him I agree with Pearl it would just be another cop show. (Then again if Damien's career really rocketed I presume he would have better things to do.)

However is Jack considered a main character? Would be foolish to get rid of a main character. Though it gets done enough...And the shows audience dies down.
