New Damien Molony Interview | Spotlight 28 June 2012

Here is a new interview with Damien, who was nominated for the Spotlight prize in 2011!

 http://www.spotlight.com/news/archive/2012/06/28/spotlight-prize-2011-nominee-damien-molony-speaks-to-spotlight.aspx

What a wonderful interview, I particulary love this part:

Quote:

But you’re character is a different kind of vampire isn’t he? He’s kind of old school.

Yeah, exactly. I wanted to go very much with the Bram Stoker, Nosferatu era, which really helped with the character because he is so moth-eaten - he just doesn’t really know how to live a modern life, poor guy.

I was just learning every day, just trying to learn as much as I possibly could. Even now when I watch it I really study myself to see what works for me and what I can improve on because we start shooting again in July, so I want to be prepared.

I knew straight away how I wanted to do my vampire attack. When I was in Cardiff I would practice in front of the mirror and I was quite scared because I wanted to make it my own. Anyone going passed would have wondered what was going on.

Nosferatu remains to this day my favourte vampire film, and possibly the scariest..maybe moreso because of it's black and white silent movie eerieness..and Shadow of the Vampire which is a very cool, quirky and engaging film of the fictional telling of the making of Nosferatu.

This is just wonderful:

Quote:

In your opinion, what makes a great actor?

A great actor is a great listener. And that’s something I am learning. Listening is the key. You can’t react truthfully unless you listen. If I could have brought that to every show I’ve done so far I would sleep easier at night. Listen every day. Just as the curtain comes up, I always say “listen”.

I liked this bit:

How does it feel being back on stage after Being Human?

It’s great, it’s lovely. There is nothing like hearing the noise behind the curtain before a show. I’m not too much into bows though, I don’t like bows. I feel very self-conscious because that’s you going on stage. But before the show starts, behind the curtain you can hear the excitement, it’s just amazing.

Because he really looked uncomfortable when he took his bows - and npw we know why.

What a lovely interview.
I especially like the bit about writing on parents new curtains. I may have done something similar only with pictures on new wallpaper as a four year old and may or may not have blamed my two year old brother

This is such a great interview! He always sounds so down to earth and I love that about him! It's kinda funny that he didn't get into the drama program at his university. I bet they are second guessing that now!

This interview is great he goes into a lot note detail about himself in this compared to other interviews. I think he sounds so much more confident in this one like he is really starting to find his feet :)

I hope we get to read lots more interviews once series 5 starts generating some buzz xx

It is obvious from Damien's authentic and natural talent that acting is in his blood, but that lovely anecdote about the curtain is a wonderful little insight.

Agreed Sami, Dublin Trinity missed out on a true talent, but the path Damien has taken has brought him to where he is today1 Purely my own opinion, but having a business degree is no bad thing to have alongside his acting talents, not just researching as he mention but having a canny awareness of himself and the industry he is from a 'business' perspective.

I wondered about that too Laura, for those of you who were lucky enough the have seen Travelling Light, the whole bowing thing would feel really awkward for me too..it is a different level of engaging with the audience than being in roe performing, I have a conductor friend who refused to bow and take applause he would step back and let the audience receive it!

Interviews like these, and the Tommy Hilfiger event one are exciting because Damien is becoming an established actor. We have to see more for BH series 5 Sue!

I could not help but wonder if the forum and fansite add to Damien's profile, I hope in a positive way!

Great interview and his explanation about bows explains a lot. He looked a bit uncomfortable and mildly bemused at Newcastle too. I found the 'listening' explanation interesting too, it has been commented upon both here and via Twitter by those of us fortunate enough to meet him after the performances, on how he listened to us, how he seemed to focus all of his attention on us as we spoke to him, how he seemed to really listen to what we had to say. His explanation in this interview makes perfect sense also.

Thank you, great interview, nice to read a new one as well :D
Actors make it look easy, I know that is their job, but when you hear things like that about listening, it makes you understand how good they are at it!! I'm not saying this well but you YKWIM !!!!!
This young man doesn't quite realise the talent he is yet, does he?

You are welcome HalGal I agree that seeing a current interview is a real treat, it feels like an exciting time in Damien's career right now.

Lol, I do know what you mean! Lisa also mentioned his comment about listening.

Sounds like wonderful advice for life in general but it certainly opens my eyes to not only Damien's acting, but his REacting. perhaps this explain his staggering range and the breadth of emotional nuance he brings to Hal in Being Human.

New article at the fansite on Damien's spotlight interview and an interview with Andrew Gower:

http://damienmolony.org/2012/07/11/damien-molony-in-the-spotlight/

“I can’t speak highly enough of Damien – he is amazing to work with. He’s in his position for a reason.
Everyone who has seen Being Human knows he is absolutely superb and electric.” (Andrew Gower)

Damiens' co-stars always say such wonderful things about him!

What is so great about this interview is it shows the steep trajectory Damien's career has been on since Drama school. Such high profile roles, it really is impressive, and how established he already is!

Really exciting months ahead of us with being Human 5 filming about to begin, definitely looking forward to the interviews!

In case anyone missed it, hear is Damien's message to Being Human fans about upcoming filming, thanks to Alice:
