So who knows their historical fashion, particularly with regard to cravats?
Of course, Hal wearing a cravat does not necessarily point towards a place in history... and could just be his present day costume choice..BUT, having made a costume transition from the 3 piece suit to far more contemporary attire, we did leave him at the end of series 4 in less old fashioned clothing, so one could assume this costume is in fact for a flashback! Or, maybe after his hopefully successful detox period maybe Hal returns to various former habits to keep himself safe. Or maybe he is hiding his neck for some reason.......
So, not when Hal vampire was made, which we know was in the 1500s (that is the flashback we all want to see right?) But I would love to see some very early vampire Hal! And his clothing does not suggest that early either....the suit is likely far more contemporary!
then we have the regency period with far more flamboyant cravats and attire and the victoriam era. I would LOVE to see Hal inthis period too.
What is the furthest we have gone back in a Hal Yorke / Lord Harry flashback?
So anyway after that very directionless ramble, what Hal era do you all think the costume may be for?
Id like to see flash backs to Hal: Before he was a vampire Being turnt into a vampire First few days of being a vampire First few years of being a vampire
I just wanted to say that xD ... i just want to see what he was like in his first few days of being a vampire compared to before and just before Leo Xx

)po, I am no expert either, but yes Cravats were hot in the victorian era and the preceding Regency era, but they were far more ornate... Hal as British dandy though... and in a frock coat... or top hat and tails.... the edwardian period seems less flamboyant.. the cravat has military origins and connections to of course...
Oh it is so much more 0p0! fascinating how they were so tight and so high people would pass out. and who knew there were so many kinds of cravat! Particularly drawn to to the cravate a la Byron I am trying to inspire myself to continue with my fanfic, the era of which is still not precisely decided!
BUT still not found out what this cravat Hal is wearing is!
@Su yes, that was one of my theories that present day Hal had returned to wearing the suit..but we saw him progress costume wise in series 4 and he does have other suits as we know! but it is the cravat itself - he is wearing it with a high collar and that seems unlikely to me to be something he would less likely wear in present day?
@Ruby like your thinking, I am veering towards that time period ish, regency, georgian victorian...the collar may be not high enough and the cravat not flouncy enough for regency...the suit has a country gentleman feel to it which is less formal and dressy than some victorian dress, so that may be where it is slightly tricky to place. But had we not seen the suit with he cravat it could be far far later !!
So are you also veering towards this being a flashack?!!! exciting!!
this afternoon i also began wondering about Hal in the Elizabethan period..lol!
I'm beginning to think more in the Victorian period, possibly early in Victoria's reign. I agree, it's a bit too formal for Regency. The other thought is that it's later Victorian, this could be one of Hal's previous 'good' cycles and something happens to tip him back into notoriety. I'm struggling with the jacket though, i'm sure jackets were of a longer length in Victorian times, more past the hip than on it, if you see what i mean and less 'straight up and down' (i can't think of the proper word to describe it, i'm sure someone will! )
ETA: Frock coat, i knew i'd remember!!, the jacket is past the hip but i thought it would be more like a frock coat in Victorian times. Ah well...only a few months til we find out for sure!

I'm not so sure that this is a flash back......i think they may have gone here to visit someone or something and hal, being the way he is, feels that he should dress up?! If he wore the suit in the first 2 episodes of the last series surely it cant be very old......

oh p.s i REALLY would love to see a flashback of what hal was like before he became a vampire! In the prequel he makes it sound as though he would be quite a cold person, after seeing every dark side of the human heart or somethingsomethingsomething lol x

I got strong Victorian vibes after seeing that cravat, if not Victorian, then early Edwardian. Going on what he said in his prequel about the length of his cycles, i wonder whether his last 'bad cycle' began in 1900, perhaps his 'good' cycle prior to that was 1845-50 to the turn of the century. The suit looks formal and the wealthier classes of Victorian society liked to dress well. I could be and probably am, completely wrong but that is the vibe i got from that pic :)
Okay, i got curious so did a bit of research and i think Hal's cravat could date to possibly William IV (just prior to Queen Victoria's reign) or early Victorian. Check out the link and scroll down to the pic of Rupert Friend (who played Prince Albert in the 'Young Victoria' movie) i think that one is a close match, though there is one in the 1850's section that is also close.

I think that is a bit OTT for present day Hal and old fashioned to boot, short of him attending a costume party, i think this is flashback. If it was present day Hal then i think he'd wear a regular shirt and tie (a la grey suit in 'Making History') I've been looking at the suit and while it's very similar to the tweed suit of '1955', i don't think that it's the same one, i could be wrong but the colour of it looks different and i'm sure that waistcoat is different. Unless the suit from '1955' is the same one that he's somehow preserved and looked after with great care and the 'special occasion' is meeting this 'Godchild'
The more i think about it and look at it, i'm of the opinion that this is flashback and a different suit (but it won't be the first time nor the last that i've been wrong about speculation and Being Human)
honestly? the suit could be way more contemporary! I mean without the cravat and collar, that could be a 'mpdern day' vintage country gentleman's look, the tweed 3 piece will always have a place in any time period ! But the suggestion in series 4 was that Hal came to HH from his Leo and Pearl days in that kind of attire, not that it was from any earlier period than that..even with Hal's meticulous care, it would surely have fallen apart by now? ;) But it is the cravat that is suggesting earlier and maybe this is not the same suit ?! Just thinking out loud..... mind you I have a vivid memory of my first day of university being rather taken aback at the first sight of my mentor (our student/mentor relationship only lasted for one day) who was only a couple of years older but dressed a little like Hal is in this shot, complete with cravat...an eccentricity I would have appreciated much more of he wasn't such a fake posh snob! I digress.
This Hal costume pic was taken on location at Tredegar House too..a 17th century mansion, wonder if there are any clues there?
By the way, this is not about spoilers for me, just the fun and excitement of speculating and not actually wanting to get it right!!!! a few months as you say Lisa........ it can't come soon enough but then we will never want it to end!
I've spent a little time looking through screen caps of '1955' and at one point i was fully prepared to say that the suit he wore in that episode is not the same as the one pictured recently we're all talking about and why? because of the breast pocket of the jacket. During the scene where he first sees the scrolls and he looks to Annie and Tom, there is no flap covering the pocket (go and look if you want to know what i mean) so i was fully prepared to go 'aha!' but later on, when he's knocked over his dominoes and is off to the pawn shop again, the scene where he does the infamous head tilt and then scared the bejeepers out of said shop owner, there is a pocket flap on the breast pocket. They are two separate jackets (and no the pocket flap isn't tucked in, it isn't possible)
GAH this man looks incredible in a suit..................................
So..if I can get past the thudding...you are saying you think the jacket in the top 2 pics above is not the same as the bottom 2?
My instinct is to say it is, and that the flap is tucked in, it looks s bt as if you can see the outline, but perhas you are right, as that flap woud be too bulky to give that flat sillhouette....really curious now!!
But it does look the same suit as the one pictured previously worn for series 5 shooting? so maybe this is not pointing to a flashback, but to a further adorable Hal eccentricity in wearing a high collar and cravat?
I suppose the flap could be tucked in but unless done precisely, it would look bulky and you'd see it. If the material of the flap was a thinner material than perhaps it could be tucked in and not show.
I wonder about the time frame of '1955', does their arrival and Leo's death and his and Pearl's departure happen over the space of a day? Because Hal wears two separate shirts in this episode, the striped one at the top and later on a plain pale blue one. I wouldn't be surprised if he did change his shirt, i think it's something Hal would do.
Yes, I think the shirt chage was mentioned in one of our Hal chats.
Are we to conclude then that despite the high collar / cravat and 17th century mansion location, this being the same suit as his 1955 episode suit implies it is not a flashback?
It seems a fair assumption we will be getting more of Hal's past..and learning much more about him though!! :
I think if this is the same suit than he wore in '1955' then it will probably be down to budget cuts/recycling than anything else and hoping that we don't notice (big mistake, we notice everything!! )
