RE: Save a Life, Give Blood! Fans inspired by Damien Molony to Donate
Permalink

The first time I gave blood was when an emergency appeal was made on the day of the Canon St rail crash.  Loads of people turned up and I guess that they rushed us through a bit.  When I left for work that morning I hadn't expected to give blood and I hadn't actually eaten anything all day (it was nearly lunch-time by then).  Everything was fine until I stood up......and then I keeled over!  The only time in my life that I have fainted.  Everyone was lovely, and they made me sit for a long time while they plied me with cups of tea and biscuits; but I was so embarrassed I just wanted to slink quietly away!

I've always felt rather ashamed that I never donated again, especially as my husband regularly gives at work.  Reading all of these stories didn't make me feel any better!  So when I saw a poster in my high street shortly before christmas, I decided that I'd got to do something about it.  I must admit that I didn't mention my previous experience, but when I told them that I'm 5'2" and don't know what I weigh there was a bit of debate about whether I could donate (I'm not exactly skinny).  Everything was fine, it was all over surprisingly quickly, and everyone was very kind and attentive (almost embarrassingly so!).

Didn't get a RT, but maybe I saved a life!  And I do have another appointment for April........

You are all brilliant, I wish I could join in and donate too, unfortunately my blood would help noone, but all of yours WILL!

And it looks like Damien was inspired by all the fans he's RT'd to make his second donation!

Yes, woome, they most certainly are!

I suddenly realised who's arm I was looking at and suddenly I felt a little faint, and I haven't even given blood today.

Good for you, fifi, for overcoming a bad memory. You are awesome.

He's got good veins! and yes, i noticed the bicep (was how i noticed the good veins!)

I have to schedule my regular blood tests this month so i'm going to ask the nurse whether i'm eligible to donate. I had a quick look on the website and while they stressed medication, they didn't say what kind of medication so i'm going to ask whether i can. Because i take a statin as well as iron and a vitamin d connected medication, i don't think i'll be able to but i won't know for sure unless i ask. Five years ago you wouldn't have got me within three feet of a needle voluntarily but a diagnosis of kidney disease and hyperparathyroidism quickly sorted that phobia out.

Information on who can / cannot give blood, in the uk, from blood.co.uk

Most people can give blood. If you are generally in good health, age 17 to 65 (if it's your first time) and weigh at least 50kg (7st 12Ib) you can donate. However, If you are female, aged under 20 years old and weigh under 65kg (10st 3lb) and are under 168cm (5' 6") in height, we need to estimate your blood volume before donating. There is no medical reason for an upper weight limit. However, our current donation beds and chairs are designed to safely accommodate a person weighing up to 25 stone (350 lb or 158 kg). You will need to be able to get on and off the donation bed or chair unaided or, if you have mobility problems, to bring someone along to assist you.

Male donors can give blood every 12 weeks. That's approximately every 3 months or 4 times in a 12 month period. Female donors can give every 16 weeks or approximately every 4 months.

You should not give blood if:

You're a male donor with less than 12 weeks' interval between donations.

You're a female donor who had given blood in the last 12 weeks (normally, you must wait 16 weeks).

You have a chesty cough, sore throat or active cold sore.

You're currently taking antibiotics or you have just finished a course within the last seven days or have had any infection in that last two weeks.

You've had hepatitis or jaundice in the last 12 months.

You've had a tattoo, semi-permanent make up or any cosmetic treatments that involves skin piercing in the last 4 months.

You have had acupuncture in the last 4 months, unless this was done within the NHS or by a qualified Healthcare Professional registered with a statutory body.

A member of your family (parent, brother, sister or child) has suffered with CJD (Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease).

You've ever received human pituitary extract (which was used in some growth hormone or fertility treatments before 1985).

You have received blood or think you may have received blood during the course of any medical treatment or procedure anywhere in the world since 1st January 1980.

You may not be able to give blood if:

You've had a serious illness or major surgery in the past or are currently on medication. Please discuss this with the clinical staff. The reason you're taking medicines may prevent you from donating.

You've had complicated dental work. Simple fillings are OK after 24 hours, as are simple extractions after 7 days.

You've been in contact with an infectious disease or have been given certain immunisations in the last four weeks.

You're presently on a hospital waiting list or undergoing medical tests.

You do not weigh over 50kgs (7st 12). Please note, if you are female, aged under 20 years old and weigh under 65kg (10st 3lbs) and are under 168cm (5’ 6”) in height, we need to confirm your estimated your blood volume is over 3500ml.

If you are unsure please call our 24 hour donor helpline on 0300 123 23 23.

Pregnancy

You should not give blood if you are pregnant or you are a woman who has had a baby in the last 6 months.

Travel abroad

Please wait 6 months after returning from a malarial area before giving blood. Please also tell us if you have visited Central/South America at any time. (Those who've had Malaria, or an undiagnosed illness associated with travel, may not however be able to give blood.)

If you are unsure please call our 24 hour donor helpline on 0300 123 23 23.

West Nile virus

Have you been to or plan to go to CANADA, UNITED STATES, ITALY, GREECE, ROMANIA, ALBANIA, ISRAEL, TURKEY, FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC of MACEDONIA, RUSSIA, WEST BANK, GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE, TUNISIA, SERBIA, KOSOVO, HUNGARY or CROATIA between May 1st and November 30th? If yes, please visit our West Nile Virus page, as it might affect you giving blood.

The special problem of HIV and Hepatitis viruses

  • Every single blood donation is tested for HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and hepatitis B and C.
  • Infected blood isn't used in transfusions but our test may not always detect the early stages of viral infection.
  • The chance of infected blood getting past our screening tests is very small, but we rely on your help and co-operation.
  • People who carry these viruses may feel healthy for many years.

You should never give blood if:

You have ever had syphilis, HTLV (Human T - lymphotropic virus), HIV or hepatitis C.

You've ever worked as a prostitute.

You've ever injected yourself with drugs - even once.

You should not give blood for 12 months after sex with:

A man (if you’re a male). Men who have had anal or oral sex with another man (with or without a condom) are deferred from blood donation for 12 months.

A man who has had sex with another man (if you're a female).

A prostitute.

Anyone who has ever injected themselves with drugs.

Anyone with haemophilia or a related blood clotting disorder who has received clotting factor concentrates.

Anyone of any race who has been sexually active in parts of the world where AIDS/HIV is very common. This includes countries in Africa. (Please be aware that if we have previously made special arrangements for you to donate you should check with our 24 hour helpline on 0300 123 23 23 as we have made some changes to our processes).

I really should get back into giving blood.

I did it a few times 5-6 years ago, then had a couple of experiences when I was turned away due to low iron levels and having been on Malaria tablets (not left enough gap after stopping taking them) and then just never got round to going back.

Now there's the National Blood Centre within a 10 minute walk from work for me, I really should get back on it and sort out an appointment!

Well done Su! Can't help but notice your Being Human Hal quote tattoo there in your customary post donation arm shot!

the images in Damiens' mentions on twitter are mostly filled with arm shots at the moment!

It is amazing to see how many fans are continuing to be inspired by Damien to give blood, it is not just a worthwhile thing to do, it makes a REAL difference and saves lives.

Mm, bourbons ... Oh yeah, the blood thing. I need to book a new appointment. Last time I tried to give I was turned away as I had an open wound (charming!) Talk of Damien's donations does tend to remind me to get up and do this.

Him and his bloody coffee!

On a side note, it's actually always been something that I've wanted to do, give blood. I should start looking up on where to start, though I probably will be turned away since right now I have a few open wounds and health problems. But I will do it one day, I am determined!

Hi Yorke, earlier in this topic we have details on who can and cannot give blood and if you visit blood.co.uk and enter your postcode, it will give you locations in the uk where you can give blood. :smile

You'll like this domino.  I actually was inspired by Damien's last tweet and signed up right after I saw it to give blood at the end of May.  I was feeling cheeky this morning, so I replied with this to his tweet:

I couldn't help it with the LeThud shirt. wink

Hi Kayla that is great news! In the meantime there are many of us who are unable to donate for one reason or another, but we can contribute to the cause by supporting Damien to spread the word!
