August 29th I will be going to donate blood at my local blood center. When it is all said and done I will be sure to share my experience and photos.
I have read through all of your experiences and am so inspired by you all! I work in a hospital and see firsthand how important the giving the gift of blood is. My mother and father had been involved in an awful car accident years ago. My mom needed several transfusions in order to survive...so it is also something that hits close home to me.
hermyownee... I am so sorry to hear about your parents accident, but thank you for sharing your story, if ever there were an example if how critical and life saving blood donation is, that would be it.
Not all fan donation stories end up in this topic, but I hope that everyone continues to share their photos here, to encourage others.
Thankfully my shift at work was switched to the morning. I was able to give blood today as planned! It went exceedingly well and I am so very happy that I went through with it.
As it was my first time donating I had to answer a plethora of questions, have my blood pressure, temperature, and iron levels checked (in the photo you will see an additional band-aid on my finger. I was just bleeding all over). Once I was completely checked out they sat me in a chair, reclined me back, and hooked me up. The nurses were excellent. Although I think that they got tired of listening to me talk () and were excited that it only took me about 5 minutes or so to completely fill the blood bag.
I didn't pass out! Go me. Although the nurse tipped me up a bit too quickly after I was done and I started to feel myself fading. I asked her to recline me again and asked for some juice. After about 3 minutes I was in tip top shape. Overall though, it was really great. It feels so good to know that I did my part to save a life - it's a high like no other! Plus you know, whilst writing this, Damien retweeted my photo. I may not have passed out from giving blood, but this may do me in.
I guess this means in another 2 months I will be doing this again.
Well done hermyownee, really glad it all went so well for your first blood donation. thank you for sharing your story and pic...and congrats on your RT from Damien on twitter!
LOL, I know! It's giraffe print. Who knew I'd be such a fashionista? They needed to double wrap me because I kept on giving blood. Actually, what I found quite funny, the nurse said "Wow, you're a vampires dream." That gave me a giggle.
Well done to everyone who has been inspired to give blood by Damien recently, please do come and tell us about it here at the forum!
The forum team have noticed a few people on Twitter have tweeted Damien about their blood donations, either without a photo or with a photo of during a donation with the needle in their arm. We are not speaking on behalf of Damien but wanted to remind people that he has said he will ReTweet anyone who tweets him their POST donation photo, i.e with the plaster and the biscuits... not the needle part, just as he has done in his donation photos:
The last time I gave blood, (which was 3 months ago, and red cross hasnt let me forget it ever since) I tweeted about it tagging him and i relaized my mistake, was no pic. so no response.
it felt good to give blood, just red cross has been bugging me and calling me everyday since, (the only downside)

well done for giving blood Glofigs, each donation really does make a difference!
Sorry to hear you are feeling pursued, perhaps they just value you as a donor. If you decide to donate again, don't forget your 'post-donation' photo, then tweet it to Damien!
I love how he's really trying to make his blood donation tweets different - he clearly thought about this with his #wildFridaynight.
Makes me feel better about what I'm about to tweet on Wednesday after my next donation (I apologise in advance).

Oooh sounds like I need to get creative with my next one in two weeks. :D. And yes it's his 5th. I'm on the same count as he is.

Glofigs, before this year I'd only donated once before, in High School many, many moons ago. That first time was horrendous, I don't know if I just hadn't drunk enough water but the nurse had to sit there for half an hour "massaging" the blood out of my arm. Needless to say half my arm was back and blue after. But I did try again, three times, only to be told each time my iron was low. I started having health issues in my mid 20's, and didn't think about donating blood for years. Fast forward to two years ago and my health problems intensified. I finally got things under control just as I discovered Hal and Damien and this fandom. When I saw Damien's 2nd donation tweet (wasn't around for the first) it got me thinking about how I'd tried donating so long ago and hadn't tried again. So I decided for my birthday I would give it a go, since I'd been feeling healthy. I "passed" the test, it was a breeze, and I felt great afterward. And of course getting a RT from Damien made the smile on my face even bigger.
There was a string of donors that tweeted pics with needles in (obviously they didn't read that the man hates needles and who would want to see that anyway???) but it also seemed like he missed a few RTs while busy with filming. Then the fiasco with Red Coat batshit crazy chick happened and I donated that same week. I was worried if he would no longer RT. Yes I should have listened to Becca (woomewithtulips) she had faith... and happily I got my RT - within 1 minute I might add. (not that I'm bragging or anything)
So this year I've donated 3 times so far, which brings my lifetime total to 4 and the 5th is scheduled in two weeks. I will continue to donate in celebration of being healthy after so many years of having problems. It makes me feel good to do things for others, I've done other charitable things but the blood donation feels more personal. I will never know who gets my blood, but the thought that I could potentially save a life is very gratifying.
And I will continue to tweet my donation pics to Damien as long as he is still RT because it puts a huge smile on this fangirl's face every time!
