If he's indeed Detective Sergeant then that puts him on the same ranking as Drake. Which makes it all rather intriguing. As a Detective Constable then he's below him and i could picture Reid, Drake and Jackson ordering him about but as a Detective Sergeant, it puts him on equal footing unless Drake has been promoted in between S1 and 2 and Flight is stepping into that vacancy? (which may make him a Detective Inspector and Reid a Detective Chief Inspector...)
(A quick google suggests from bottom to top goes like this : police constable, sergeant, inspector, chief inspector, superintendent, chief superintendent)
I can imagine either way, Reid and Drake will probably still boss the new boy around... ;)

I agree he's going to be bossed around, regardless of rank but I suppose the question is how much he listens. Will he be the obedient type, a bit like Hobbs, or the wayward lad with too many ideas of his own? That may depend on how big a role he has; he's listed amongst the main cast, so reasonably important, but enough to justify big storylines? We'll just have to wait and see...
In terms of big storylines and 'main' characters Ripper Street is pleasantly unusual...characters like Long Susan do not always have much screen time but are still considered a main character...as a crucial part of the fabric of the Ripper Street world...I am wondering if it may be similar for Flight?
The new photo and the 'Sergeant' part of the title (assuming it is not in error) really has added to my excitement to 'meet' Albert Flight, which was already pretty huge as his debut draws closer and closer!
*runs in screaming* IRISH ACCENT. IRISH ACCENT!!!!!!!!
and secrets!!!!!!!

I much prefer the pic of him without that hat, to be honest, in the first promo pic, it doesn't do him any favours *dodges flying tomatoes*
But it answers the question of his accent, he'll be an Irish boy, ahh to hear that gorgeous brogue on tv. And yes, secrets!!. I wondered whether he'd be Hobbs's replacement and it would seem that he is, of a kind. I wish they'd hurry up and announce a transmission date, the wait is torture!!
The wording did seem to imply he's Hobbs's replacement didn't it? But since he's a higher level than Hobbs, and they hint at hidden layers about him to be explored, I hope he appears much more than Hobbs did.
You know, I could take or leave the hat (and some of the clothes) And yes, I'll go there... he can take it all off and I'd be happy .
I never liked scruffy faces and never really attracted to hats on men but he transcends my preferences. I've loved him in everything I've seen him in. The only thing I didn't were the horrendous bee beenie and awful jumper in If You Don't Let Us Dream. I'd like to gouge that out with a spoon from my memory.

Kat I hope it's his natural one, not the more pronounced Northern one we've heard in some of his radio readings. omg, accent thudding ahead!
It's good for a man to have many layers. Just makes the mystery that much more exciting to unwrap. Or something, something, something....

OMG!! I passed excited such a long time ago I don't even know where I am anymore!
Irish - yes! That makes me happy. And 'a man of secrets' makes him sound a much deeper, more developed character than Hobbs was (poor Hobbs!) which makes me optimistic that he could have a bigger role than Hobbs.
(hardly noticed the hat in the first pic...too distracted by the face (....eyes)!)
And I agree, Ruby...we need to know when this is going to air now!!
I am reading the posts but words are not coming, merely sounds....like waaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!! squeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!! YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYy!!!!! (please help)
I buy the BBC History magazine, history being a passion of mine (and it comes in handy for research purposes at times too) and this month there is an article about how in the early 1880's, Irish republicans launched a bombing campaign in London, using dynamite. The Home Office introduced a new detective department known as the Special Irish Branch and they worked at identifying who the bombers why etc. If the dates hadn't too early (between 1881-85 apparently) i would've wondered whether this pertained to Flight's 'secrets' but i think he's too young to be part of this, to look at him, he looks to be too young with that (lovely) baby face. Unless the writers do a time fiddling thing of course ;)
Ruby, thanks for that little tidbit of info. Well, they are very good at incorporating historical facts in this show, I wouldn't put it past them to explore this and have that the reason they brought in an Irishman. Though not sure if they would fiddle with dates. I don't think they have so far. But if they were using this angle, I could see his very lovely baby face as being part of it. The article said he had secrets and I found this wording interesting:
Spoiler
But Flight is to prove himself not only worthy of Reid’s respect; but also unworthy of the kind of innocence that drew such affection to Hobbs.
So...
Spoiler
'unworthy of the kind of innocence'... perhaps that's part and parcel, that he looks younger than he is or claims to be? Perhaps he could have been part of the bombings as a teenage boy/young man. The actor playing Hobbs is young, barely in his 20's and I'm assuming Hobbs was supposed to be that young. Damien looks very young but he's almost 30. So maybe Flight is supposed to be as well. Anyway, all just wanderings of my mind...

On the contrary, 'secrets' could be in Bert's past, what he got up to as a restless teenager, what any big brothers/sisters, aunts/uncles, parents got up to - and he went the other way and joined the Rozzers!
btw, I'm not reading the spoilers so if I don't make sense, you'll know why. (Or I could just not be making sense.)

I have to ask about his accent and his radio plays....i am almost certain that the accents we heard in his radio plays are his natural southern Irish accent. Northern Irish accents are much harder and to me, more noticeable and i would've noticed if he'd used a more northern accent and i didn't. It sounded, at least to me, like his natural accent.
Having another read through of his character profile and i wonder at those secrets that not even H Division could guess at. What is that boy hiding???? I can't wait to find out!
Definately southern Irish accents for the radio plays......although I would say more pronounced than Damien's own....esp. for hill bachelors - Damien's own accent isn't very strong (although my OH does become very Cornish when he's with his family......)
It wouldn't surprise me to find that Albert Flight has a stronger accent than Damien's own either.....
sorry, I'm fairly ignorant about accents. I just meant that, as fifi said, he's had a more exaggerate version of his own accent in his radio stuff, particularly The Hill Bachelors. Damien does not say "ting" instead of "thing" for instance. From his interviews, it's really the R's and S's that stand out as Irish, but overall not very strong. Just a lovely tiny bit of lilt to his voice.

We are delighted to share with our readers the official character profile for Damien’s new character in Ripper Street Series 2.
(slight spoiler warning for character revealing info)
RIPPER STREET II
DETECTIVE SERGEANT ALBERT FLIGHT –DAMIEN MOLONY
As an Irishman in the Metropolitan police, Flight is already marked out as an outsider. Securing Reid’s trust and respect is an even harder task, however, for Reid sees in him only a reminder of the violent and tragic loss of another young man PC Dick Hobbs.
But Flight is to prove himself not only worthy of Reid’s respect; but also unworthy of the kind of innocence that drew such affection to Hobbs. For Flight is a man of secrets. Secrets at which the men of H Division could never even guess.
With huge thanks to Tiger Aspect Productions for their kind permission.
Ripper Street Series 2 is expected to premiere soon on BBC One in the UK and airs 1st December on BBC America.

Spoiler
An interview with Matthew Macfadyen has surfaced, quite spoilery but he mentions Fenian Terrorism. This is the Irish Republicans i mentioned in an earlier post and i could be jumping to conclusions but i'm wondering whether, as Whimsy has already alluded to, that young Flight had Fenian connections as a younger man. The bombing campaign in London was 1881-85 so i suppose that is plausible. Perhaps we see some of his old Fenian cohorts make a reappearance in a later episode? I can't wait to find out

Hi Lisa, the spoiler tags didn't work in your post, so I edited it.
I just mentioned this interview in the news topic, but understand why you put this bit here I must admit I am not overthinking the storylines involving Damien, but it seems likely!
oooh, Lisa I mentioned in the other topic but good sleuthing! and I'm sure you caught this:
Spoiler
Mathew MacFadyen said "There’s Fenian terrorism too - there were a lot of bombings. There is an episode that deals with that."
The photo of Damien sitting next to that girl has this caption: A scene from RIPPER STREET – Episode Four: ‘Dynamite and a Woman’
Maybe they show some flashbacks and that's why he's dressed more roguish? Or he goes under cover to infiltrate his hold cohorts? or to meet that woman?
Whatever it turns out to be I'm hoping this means plenty of Flight!

ooh now that is interesting! Perhaps she's connected to the Fenian cause, a former love he left behind- he could've been undercover and they had a relationship? Or that could just be my fic brain on overdrive! I hadn't noticed the episode title until you mentioned it.
