Eek I hope not, he doesn't look like a Bert. Bertie maybe? Being a detective constable rather than a plain police constable would suggest he won't be wearing a uniform and would explain the picture of him in costume that alerted us to his new role. Very pleased we're starting to learn more about his new role.

yay

I am so excited about this and glad that he is a replacement for Hobbs.

He'll definitely be "Flight" at work, but I would expect him to be a Bertie or Albert. Al Flight seems difficult to get one's tongue around!

Now for the pics!

I'm sure I'd be more excited if I had ever seen the show.  I guess I'll have to catch up. It's good to know he has a recurring role again.

I'm kind of "meh" on the subject matter but that doesn't mean I will not enjoy the show.  I was also skeptical of a show about a serial killer that only kills serial killers and a show about a U.S. Marshal in Kentucky. Those shows turned out to be addictive for me.

For the record I thought Being Human sounded like nothing more than a set up to a bad joke at first.  I was wrong on that too. biggrin

whimsy - yeah....I did the 'H division', Al / Hal thing too.  Much prefer Bertie...but you're right, domino - he's gonna get called Flight. (why is that making me giggle! - I seem to be a bit light-headed!!)  It does sound a bit Dickens, doesn't it?

It is an unusual surname and, yes, I can't help chuckling to myself every time I say it.

Can we get a Police "Flight" related emoticon? Combination of flying and policemen? A police aeroplane...?

Oh dear, am straying slightly from the topic, lol.

It's definitely hit the news sites, talk about feast or famine! yay for Damien!!

I've been doing a little bit of investigation courtesy of Wiki, regarding the title 'Detective Constable'.

"The rank of Detective Constable (DC) is not senior to that of a uniformed constable, the prefix identifies the officer as being from CID or other investigative unit"

Now this is modern day policing but i would assume that very little has changed over the years. As i said earlier, it would suggest Albert is not a uniformed officer (and wow wouldn't he look spiffy in a police uniform?) and would explain the picture that was tweeted back in May.

I'm hoping for an October transmission date. I loved this show before Damien joined, i'm even more excited now and thrilled that he's attached to such a successful show. Bravo that man!!

I think that Wikipedia is correct in the sense of DC's being no senior than PC's in the Police hierarchy but traditionally TV shows have portrayed CID officers as believing they're better than their 'plod' counterparts. It'll be interesting to see how Albert communicates with his uniformed colleagues as well as with Reid and Drake. I can see him being taken under one of their's wings, possibly Reid's, with the other being a lot more harsh in training him up.

Maybe he's going to be a "modern" policeman and embraces the new technologies that will undoubtedly come to the fore in this series...

Mentioned this in another thread but i'll say it here too..

Did a little investigating of the term 'Detective Constable' on Wiki, made me think a bit as Hobbs in S1 was just a 'police constable' so according to Wiki, a 'Detective Constable' isn't senior to a uniformed police constable. It just means that he's assigned to CID or some similar division. That may go to explaining the tweeted pic of Damien with Jerome Flynn and Mr Spears and not being in uniform. So i'm beginning to think that perhaps he isn't Hobb's replacement per se. I'm looking forward to finding out. Fingers crossed for an October transmission date.

I don't want him to have a stupid name like Flight.no.gif Why can't it be Al or Bert. Those sound like a reasonable name.

People in Victorian times (and later) tended to call their subordinates by their surname. He would never be called by his first time in any shape or form. Only close friends and family would call a man by his first name.

While a cockney accent seems likely, I wonder whether we'll hear his 'Hal' accent? It all depends on his character I suppose :)

Not sure where to drop this little nugget of information (suddenly there are 8 Ripper Street topics! - is it odd that I'm really excited by that?) but, according to the BBC Media site, series one sold to over 120 territories worldwide......Damien is going global! Lol!,

Hi all!

To avoid confusion, the 2 topics on the announcement of Damien's Ripper Street role have been merged together, so all discussion on Albert Flight can go in this topic.

Here is a handy guide on other Ripper Street discussion topics:

Ripper Street 2 air dates here

Damien Ripper Street Media and Press here

Ripper Street general (not Damien related) here

Things have been getting a little hectic in this section lately, so if we could try and roughly stick to these topics that would be great!

thanks!

domino :)

Following on from Lisa's research on the police ranking 'Detective Constable', I found the following:

Victorian London Police Divisions

Interesting to read about the origins of the divisions in London, and the CID began in 1844 apparently.

As we have read, Series 2 moves the action forward to 1890 and according to the above, H Division was huge. and no mention of 'detective constable' as a separate rank. I think I mentioned in the other thread that it seemed an unspoken promotion for Hobbs into plain clothes, as a reward for him working on his initiative...so perhaps Damien's character is to continue along the same lines.

H or Whitechapel Division.

Leman Street.
Thos. Arnold, Supt.;
Inspectors 30; Sergeants 44; Constables 473. Total 548.

however the term 'detective' I think was relatively new and when created related to plain clothes police and seems be added in front of the ranks above almost as a separate chain of command than the uniformed police?

edit: the following wikipedia article states the metropolitan CID was set up in 1878 - 2 years before series 2 of Ripper Street is said to take place and the rank 'Detective Constable' is a distinct rank although as you say Lisa,  not senior to uniformed ranks.

Criminal Investigation Department

I am satisfied though now that there is a clear distinction between 'Detective constable' and 'constable' - Digitalspy who first reported on Damien's role gave the latter, which is incorrect.
