I think tartan was very popular for men's suits at that time. I know it was popular during the Victorian age (Queen Victoria loved it while staying at Balmoral), i remember Reid & co wearing tartan in S1, perhaps an even louder tartan than what Flight is wearing in that picture. He looks very dapper with watch chain, tie pin and i think i spy cufflinks too (or that just could be the buttons of his shirt)

Now we can see it closer, you can see that he has cuff links, a tie pin, watch chain and presumably a watch on the end of it. He also has a really good suit and shirt. So I reckon he is not short of a bob or two (for our US cousins this means has plenty of spare money!)

He certainly looks posh and well to do.  Makes me wonder what type of accent he'll have.  Similar to Hal?

I noticed that he looked a bit more dressed up than the othres. Maybe he's going on a date? Party? Social call?
Whatever, he looks lovely as always.

As if he wasn't appealing enough. *eyebrow waggle*

whimsy, I am so glad you brought that up! I too thought about what type of accent he'd have...English, one like Hal's, or perhaps they let him use his Irish accent?

Purely my ignorant speculation but I feel that if he were to play an Irishman he would have been given an Irish name. Albert just sounds British.  Though not sure where Flight fits in.

Not a useless fact at all, see how you appropriately used it here to deduce which accent he may have? Plus you know, I actually find that stuff kind of interesting. So thank you!

I was leaning toward more of the Hal accent too, hoping that maybe would let the Irish slip in...I just love it. Really though, I love them both. It's a win/win for me.

He might have had to, ruby. And that would make his character more interesting. I wonder what traits he will have... We were discussing this in another thread (domino and I both chose broodier photos of Damien to interpret what Flight may look like). From his clothing we see he may be posh. It'll be interesting to find out if he is going to be the more broody type, or if we will see him as that new, possibly reserved, young detective. It sure would be nice to see more of that smile! I bet we can do more Sherlocking once new promos and tv spots come out.

fifi, true!! Maybe, and this is me becoming WAY too over analytical (and I apologize), but if he is posh, coming from money and all of that, maybe he wants to disassociate himself from that type of lifestyle? Kind of finding his own way, doing his own thing.

Can't help thinking if Albert Flight was a posh victorian, he wouldn't have a job as a detective constable....but agree that it sounds like an English name - shame!  I'd love to have heard his Irish accent.

And I agree with TJ...he does look 'dressed up' - and it's a much smarter costume than in the Glen Speers pic - makes me think that he's possibly dressed for an event..... And it's interesting the Jerome Flynn is out of costume.

I think maybe Jerome had finished filming that day and Matthew and Damien hadn't?

Albert was a very popular Victorian name, made popular possibly by Prince Albert -after he died, Queen Victoria decreed that all royal princes be named Albert after him, his grandson the Duke of Clarence, [the one rumoured to be Jack the Ripper, he died in 1892 and his brother became George V and later married his late brother's fiancee] was Albert Victor and George VI (father of present queen) was known as Bertie within the family but i do believe the name perpetuated throughout the family - and that's your useless historical factoid of the day-

I can imagine him having a 'Hal accent' too. I can't see him being Irish at all. The surname 'Flight' suggests working class so perhaps he's pulled himself up by his bootstraps to achieve his currrent position?

I think the new little Prince George has Albert in there somewhere...I'm sure Prince Charles has it as well. Albert has generally become more popular again of late as have a lot of the late Victorian/Edwardian boys' names. Less so for girls though (no Phyllis like my Nan) although I do know a Daisy, a Florence and a Violet who are all under the age of 5!

I agree that Flight isn't an aristocratic name, nor is it Irish, so I suspect he's either working class who's done very well for himself (and maybe a bit if a dandy, although he doesn't look outlandish enough for that) or he's a middle class gent who wants to work for a living.

Either way, I hope that he's either totally London or at least has a twang. Being too close to his Hal accent, whilst gorgeous, would be a shame.

'bit of a dandy'... this is the feeling I am getting too... and his costume is similar in ilk to Reid's which is interesting in itself. the extras like the tie pin, watch and cuff links could even suggest a more flamboyant character perhaps, or a very clothing conscious fop, or someone trying to impress, or he could just be dressed like this for a particular scene! or as you say fifi, an event. there is something about his hair though that doesn't suggest a rogue in any way, that makes sense.
I agree with you Lisa, after seeing this costume I can imagine a posh Hal accent for Albert Flight! EEEEEEP! Cannot wait to find out!

Lol!
The BBC only release pics after embargoes are lifted, usually very near to the air date. But that is surely not far off now and also... there will be trailers!

I know! isn't it exciting HalGal?! coolbounce

I was looking at some Doctor Who Christmas Special filming pics yesterday and it struck me that Damien's new costume is quite like Matt Smiths as the Doctor, the period feel and the pocket watch. I like this.

I have to be absolutely honest and say I was not expecting this.

I was expecting to see a picture of Albert all dapper and suited and booted, not this. So perhaps Albert is maybe from another division, this is an undercover costume and through whatever circumstances, he ends up at H division but properly suited and booted. I am most intrigued and can't wait to see for myself. The fact that new promo pics are being shared must mean that trailers/transmission date announcements will be soon.

The hat is reminiscent of bad Hal's fedora. Damn the man looks good in hats.
