Hey everyone!

I want to create a new POLL on favourite Hal speeches delivered by Damien, from Being Human Series 4 and 5.

There are a few standout ones in my mind, but want to hand it over to you all, so we can build the poll together as a group!

So which ones you think should be included?

it could be about the power of the speech, the meaningfulness for the character, or the sheer mindblowingly good acting chops of our Mr M!

I'll start us off ...

'Not a Man Of God' speech, Being Human Series 4 Episode 2 '1955'................

Add your faves below!

The Sylvie monologue from The Greater Good (S05E04) when he is meditating with Crumb. I think it is by far the best example of Damo's acting. So powerful and yet subtle, gives me chills every time.

Hopefully these will make sense.

-Man of God

-Drinking blood is an overture...

-The true test of a teacher (with Larry in the kitchen)

-Tent Speech

That is firmly on my list too Elyse...every word is delivered with exquisite nuance, both the delivery and the emotion elevates and transcends the script in a way that is utterly mesmerizing and moving.

Really surprised noone has mentioned

"And I had a shield, a red one..." Series 4 episode 3 'The Graveyard Shift'

Would we call the "It's not dissatisfaction...." line from BH4 Ep7 a speech? and how about "we can raid the dressing up box..." ?

"where he is all emo" lol this makes me chuckle HalGal!

I agree with you, though o first watching the I had a shield speech was pretty powerful, as well as entertaining and Hlaarious, n that it gave us a glimpse into Hal's past...;

Are there any more Hal speeches anyone can think of?

You guys have mentioned all my favourites, the man of god speech, the first of many jaw-drops from me, the Halarious shield speech which provided one of our first insights into Hal's past, the tent speech to Tom, when I fell in love with Hal more than I ever thought possible (I cry every time), and Sylvie...well I loved that one so much I had to write a whole fic about him and Sylvie.....

What about his speech to Crumb in the chair?: "Crumb, your face.  You thought you'd lost your reflection.  Well take a good look boy.  This is you.  This is us.  We're not cursed, we are the curse....You might get 10, 20, or even 50 years if you're lucky, or stupid enough to try.  But it won't last. It will find you, it will always find you." The way his face completely changes with that wicked grin, and the timbre of his voice...Damien does a fantastic, almost magical job of completely transforming into bad Hal for just those few seconds then transforming back.  And it makes me have feelings.

and his speech at the end before Rook comes: “I'm not a part of this little experiment anymore, which grants me a clarity...Annie, George, Mitchell, Nina, the two of you, what none of you realized…what none of us realized; Is the desire to be human is the end, not the beginning. To want it is to have it. You’re not wasting your time Tom, you’ve already won.” a tribute to our originals, touching how bad Hal doesn't crush Tom's hopes but instead reinforces them, legitimizes all their stuggles.  (I don't feel I'm saying that quite right but I think you get my meaning.  And I haven't watched this one as much so I know I don't have the quote quite right either.)

It's not dissatisfaction is absolutely a speech, "destined to be a History Maker" formulates Cutler's entire character.  And of course the dressing up one - that's a classic BH theme that comes up several times, and his speech epitomizes it.

I love this topic but it's going to be extremely hard to vote!!! Why did the writers have to be so brilliant, and why did he have to be so amazing in his delivery if these speeches?

Those are two excellent additions whimsy, I considered the "take a good look boy" one from series 5 episode 4 when Crumb had tied Hal to the chair...(having just done the screencaps for that one for our Hal chats!) but dismissed it on the basis it may be more of a quote than a speech.. Also my reason for questioning the history maker and raid the dressing up box. But, if the consensus is that they are indeed speeches, yay

'Take a good look boy' is definitely a speech... it is several lines long. And one of my favorites! I completely forgot about it.

How have i missed this topic???

Upon second viewing, the 'take a good look boy' speech didn't have the same impact on me as it originally did. I can remember the first time being genuinely freaked out a bit by it, a shiver down my spine at the teeth thing that he does (he also does it, i notice during the Tom/Hal fight in the final episode) but second time around, i dunno, it just didn't have the same impact. I was more affected by the actions, of Crumb getting in his face and throwing him about in the chair and Hal's resulting fear at the re-emergence of Lord Harry.

Anyhow....hands down absolute favourite Hal speech EVER for me is "I'm not a man of God" speech. Every time i watch it, every single time, it just blows me away. I've said it before but i can imagine the people behind the camera, the editors and whatnot watching that and perhaps thinking, like us, 'wow' and Toby seeing it and thinking, quite rightly, that they'd netted an absolute talent for the show. I've yet to read a single review that says otherwise. Every single review i've come across for S4 and S5 of Being Human has commented on how good Damien is. And this was the speech, the very first of his i think, that made me think everything was going to be fine after the departure of three of the Original Line Up.

'Man of God' is definitely when I first realized that I might actually like this new vampire guy.
