In case you need a little reminder, each speech is given in full below.
(Some of these are more longer quotes than speeches, but deserve to be here.)
1. ‘I have been so many people since then’ - Hal’s Prequel
Writer: Toby Whithouse
“I was born in a brothel, I don't even know which of the six illiterate whores was my mother but when, one by one, each of them were lost to disease or violence, I mourned them, and they were my blood, I ran away to sea, ended up in Gdansk, fell into the Battle of Orsha, ended up on the wrong side of a Muscovite lance.. by the time I was a young man I'd seen every dark corner of the human heart, so when the army surgeon offered me eternal life in return for what little god had left me of my soul, I accepted, not because I feared death, but because I could think of nothing that deserved my loyalty any more. I have been so many people since then, some kind, some cruel.. they take their turns to claw their way to the surface”
2. 'Not a Man Of God' BH4 Ep 2 -'1955'
Writer: Lisa McGee
“Right now your heart feels like it’s swollen, it’s beating so fast that your worried it might burst through your chest, your body’s weighted, like you’ve been welded to the spot you stand in. Your hands are sweating, spasming and you don’t know if you are going to be able to hold on to that thing for much longer, let alone fire it. But all this is perfectly normal because you see everything in your body is telling you to fight this – killing is the most difficult thing in the world, which is why when you actually do it there’s nothing more exhilarating, you play god, and it makes you feel powerful, invincible…. that feeing doesn’t last, soon you realise that even if you get away with it, you never really get away with it..you think you’ll walk away from something like this unscathed but it’s impossible, it all clings to you – the mess you made of him the scars you placed on him, the blood you bathed him in, sticks to you, it stains you – do this and it won’t be the last time you see his face, you’ll see him first thing in the morning and last thing at night and he’ll be with you while you dream. You end his life and he’ll invade yours.”’
3. ‘I cannot sleep in a barn’ BH4 Ep3- The Graveyard Shift
Writer: Jamie Mathieson
I cannot sleep in a barn, or a tent or a caravan or anywhere without central heating, carpets and radio 4. That should be on my list, really it should, you make me do that I won’t be responsible for my actions”
4. ‘And I had a shield, a red one...’ BH4 ep3 - The Graveyard Shift
Writer: Jamie Mathieson
“I used to ride a horse once.. I had a sword, I was respected, better than that, I was feared. Peasants had their backs flayed for looking at me funny. It was brutal but it worked, we had order, we had respect, and now we have this? And I had a shield, a red one”
5. ‘It's not dissatisfaction..’ BH4 Ep7 – Making History
Writer: Toby Whithouse
"It’s not dissatisfaction, it’s a feeling more akin to having been born in captivity..the seeping realisation that your dreams and ambitions are just too big, too rich for this domestic world”
6. ‘Raid the dressing up box’ BH4 Ep7 – Making History
Writer: Toby Whithouse
“We can raid the dressing up box and pretend to be human, but ultimately what’s the point, sooner or later we all go back to being the monsters we truly are”
7. 'Overture to Catastrophe' BH5 Ep1 - The Trinity
Writer: Toby Whithouse
“drinking blood means I have become the man I fear..drinking blood is the overture to greater catastrophe”
8. 'one word’ BH5 Ep1 - The Trinity
Writer: Toby Whithouse
“your body is going through an extraordinary transformation, one I went through many years ago. You feel nauseous because your blood pressure has dropped. Your heart rate’s about 1 beat per minute now, but you won’t die, because your healing process has got spectacularly fast…Yes but you don’t want water, all you’ve been able to think about since you awoke, is one word, but you don’t know why, if I told you there was some underneath this floor, you’d dig through the concrete with your fingers, accept it and I can help you, but you have to say it”
9. 'grab your coat Ian’ BH5 Ep1 - The Trinity
Writer: Toby Whithouse
“500 years of murder and torment, round and round we go…evil doesn’t die, it just passes like a parcel, from year to year, from body to body… And I survive, I live on, while good people die around me, heroes die.. grab your coat Ian, we’re leaving, because I’ve seen how this ends”
10. 'You are nothing to me now' BH5 Ep2 - Sticks and Rope
Writer: Daragh Carville
"You stay away because I will kill you, there is so much more at stake than you, you are nothing to me, now, you are nothing to me now you are sediment , you are detritus, you are regret and disgust, and nothing more, stay away! I have killed men and women and children just think how easy it will be to kill you."
11. 'A monster inside you' ('Tent' speech) BH5 Ep3 - Pie and Prejudice
Writer: Jamie Mathieson
“Let’s say that’s true, no, let’s say you have a monster inside you, all the time, pulling at your strings, tormenting you, itching to see you fail, well join the club, come on in because if you do, if all of that is true, then this is where you prove your worth, by fighting it, by defying it, by proving it wrong, by standing toe to toe with it every day and spitting in its face”
12. ‘Sylvie’ monologue BH5 Ep4 - The Greater Good
Writer: John Jackson
“ I always have a rough idea of when am about to… revert, but this time, he came from nowhere, I was out riding when suddenly I decided to turn my horse round ride back to the house and kill everyone inside it, as if I was deciding to change into a warmer coat. I worked my way up from the kitchens and found her sitting on our bed, she didn’t look frightened, or even surprised, just disappointed. She told me not to blame myself, she said it was stupid of her to think she could change me. I agreed, then laughed”
13. ‘Take a good look boy’ BH5 Ep4 - The Greater Good
Writer: John Jackson
"Crumb, your face. You thought you'd lost your reflection didn’t you. Well take a good look boy, this is you, This is us. We're not cursed, we are the curse....You might get 10, 20, or even 50 years if you're lucky, or stupid enough to try. But it won't last. It will find you, it will always finds you."
14. ‘board up the windows’ BH5 Ep5 – No Care, All Responsibility
Writer: Sarah Dollard
“Last time I went cold turkey Leo had to board up the windows. I couldn’t look out at people in the street without seeing the veins beneath their skin. I saw veins and I saw an end to it, an end to the pain. Leo kept the boards on the windows for two years. Just in case”
15. ‘the desire to be human’ BH5 Ep6 – The Last Broadcast
Writer: Toby Whithouse
“I'm not a part of this little experiment anymore, which grants me a clarity...Annie, George, Mitchell, Nina, the two of you, what none of you realized…what none of us realized; Is the desire to be human is the end, not the beginning. To want it is to have it. You’re not wasting your time Tom, you’ve already won.”
I went with 'Not a Man of God' because that's the one that really hooked me. That part at the end where he ever so slightly leans in to deliver "I'm not a man of god." Oooohhh! They're all fantastic though.

So torn, so torn. 'The desire to be human' and 'the monster inside you' for their inspiration, and because they're all about love and care, or 'Sylvie' for the tragedy and chills. ... I'm going for Sylvie. I guess it's the mood I'm in today.

Wow so many awesome ones!!! I had forgotten about the prequel domino :D thanx for writing them all out it is amazing seeing them written and hearing how Hal says them in your head!!! I went for "I had a shield" because its such classic Hal!!! The others are all amazing and emotional, but the red shield one is so funny !!! :D xxx

I thought I already knew which would get my vote....but then I read them all and now I'm all indecisive (no change there then!) I shall have to give this some serious consideration. It may require a lot of time spent watching clips of Hal - oh well....if I must......
Thank you for voting Jane, UJ and HalGal! 'Not A Man Of God', 'Monster inside you' and the 'Sylvie speech' are my top 3 for pure emotion and breathtaking performance - each word in each of those speeches carries so much weight because of the way Damien delivers them - mesmerizing.
And then there is the speech in 'The Last Broadcast'... standout and pivotal to the entire foundation of Being Human..
And Hal's prequel... stunning monologue in all senses.
But as you say HalGal, his 'And I had a shield speech is such classic Hal and Iliterally have the -'shirt, hand signed by the man himself..so it is a tough call.
So I am in the same place as you right now Pradakat and fifi - swimming in epic Hal speeches and pondering - bliss!
After much torment, I narrowed it down to two and just had to pick one. I went for the tent speech, but the Sylvie one was equal first for me. Such completely stunning acting, and powerful dialogue and delivery. I think what makes Damien's acting so superb, particularly in these monologues, is the minute details in his expressions. Every inch of him is in character, it's like he literally becomes Hal for those few minutes.
The Sylvie speech is really beautiful in that because the shot is so close and intimate. He's on the brink of tears for the whole thing and looks so haunted.
But his emotion and clear love for Tom got me in the tent scene, not to mention it's one of my favourite descriptions of the monster in Hal throughout his whole two series.
Close third for me was "Take a good look boyyyyy" (and it has to be said just like that when repeated!). How can someone make such an evil, egotistical maniac so, so hot!? I actually rooted for bad Hal here. It was the first time I suddenly thought, "you know what, I love good Hal and I want him to live happily ever after, but I could so easily live with it if bad Hal does win." Testament to Damien and to the writers for creating a character whose good and bad sides are so easily loved.
That's enough of that essay. Now, I am in no way shirking from work in favour of acting out any of those speeches. Nope. I'm not doing that at all. Not in the slightest....
A pleasure to read your ninja essay Cat! Well said, very well said by the way. Damien has that exceptional quality of being able to almost literally channel a character- i do wonder how draining that must be. but so grateful for such ridiculously engaging monologues.
His Hannibal Lecter moment is just delicious...
You do realise you have just sparked a whole new poll idea...for best emotional expression...in non dialogue moments
Now get back to not acting out these Hal speeches!
That would be an amazing poll! I wouldn't envy you in picking out options though. On the spot, the one that stands out to me is his face when Alex has a go at him at the hotel in S5 E1. Or the lip wobble when Annie persuades him and Tom to put down their weapons at the pawn shop in S4 E2. Or..... :P
that has def got to be your fave Su, you had it tattooed on your arm!
After much wonderful deliberation, I voted 'A Monster Inside you' because of Damien's heart full performance and also because it totally touched something in me personally and I found it inspiring and strengthening in light of the challenges I face in my daily life.
I didn't post screen caps on purpose - feeling the visual may sway the poll... BUT if anyone wishes to do so as part of their 'vote for this speech' campaign
Ah whimsy - I agree! Those are my top choices too.....thank you so much for saying it all so eloquently!
As you say, domino, they are all so fantastically delivered - each word carries such weight.
Having studied all of these scenes very closely - such a hardship! - I've decided to go with my original choice. It's got to be the "...man of God" speech for me too. And I completely echo everything whimsy said......even including the bit about google! (although it still wasn't until he went back and did the eyes and teeth thing that I actually fell in love with Hal!). I can't even begin to guess how many times I've watched that ep....but that speech is just so compelling that I still get completely absorbed by it. As whimsy said, I'd got the funny/quirky/cute thing....all with a healthy dose of arrogance, but this was something different.
There is something....genuine about Hal at this moment. He is controlled, but relaxed - out of his 'safe zone' but isn't yet 'circling the drain' - and is in control of his bloodlust. There is nothing explicitly threatening about him.....but his composure, his tone of voice, and his eyes all convey threat. And there is a suggestion of supressed excitement which is just mesmerising. My favourite moment in that speech is "..... when you actually do it there's nothing more exhilarating, you play god and it makes you feel powerful, invincible..." - which carries a hint of emotion....of exhilaration.
But with the line "that feeling doesn't last.." all of that fades away and he really looks haunted by his past. It's all so subtle it just draws you in. By the time he delivers the "I'm not a man of god" line his eyes are as 'deep as an empty grave' - to quote something I read in an article somewhere (sfx maybe?)
And I've got to say it's also a beautiful piece of writing.....
