If they just wanted another policeman with no fleshed out personality, they'd have put someone in uniform. The fact that he's a Detective would make me think there's an element of training someone young up...will be interested to see how young he's playing (esp after playing a 519 year old!)
And any kind of love interest that involves, I dunno, nudity or press ups or kissing or all three is acceptable in my book!
whimsy/kat - this is relevent to your conversation....but if you haven't seen ep 7 yet, then don't read it....
Spoiler
If I remember rightly, wasn't Hobbs about to become a trainee detective when he was killed? In which case.....trainee makes sense!
whimsy - when I saw that pic of him from twitter, I was surprised how long his hair is, considering that he's still filming. I'd assumed it was cut short under that hat....
I've seen ep7, so know what you're talking about, although I don't remember the line specifically. However, of course, it did explain why what happened in the ep happened...
I am so looking forward to this now - really really hope we don't have to wait six months for it!
Kat, I think your theory has merit. Trainee Detective. He's quite clean shaven in his costume picture and looks very young. (I just noticed in the tweet from Reg last week he looks clean shaven too). And that tweet from Charlene McKenna just has me all intrigued about the possibility of a love interest...
I thought that too Whimsy. Hmm that would be interesting as Jerome Flynn's character Drake is still in love with her.

Perhaps he's transferred in from another division and not a trainee at all?
Spoiler
I could be wrong but i have a memory of Hobbs either telling Reid that he wanted to train as a detective, or Reid made an announcement that he was going to become a detective, something along those lines. I do remember thinking while watching that it would be a good thing to see and being all the more gutted when he was killed off

the episode where Hobbs was murdered, Reid told him to change into "civvies" and follow someone and this was his first non-uniformed job..it was as if a kind of unspoken promotion - he had proved himself repeatedly beforehand and won the admiration of Reid - and he appeared to be being tested at first then groomed for a more advanced position and that episode was as if they had given it to him. It occurs to me that again Damien is stepping into a 'replacement' role..and they will be grieving so there will be that perception that he is Hobbs' replacement and that whole winning everyone over thing..both the audience and his colleagues who were very fond of Hobbs....and we know he will...with bells on! So he will probably also be written as a very different character to Hobbs and that throws up some interesting possibilities!
