I have been officially told there will be news next week on Damien's casting or not in Ripper Street 3..............
Eeek!
But.....
considering how agonising the wait for confirmation became last year....I won't hold my breath (...she lied!)
I will continue to do my best. Probably will not hear until it is news that can be shared at large.... I am secretly hoping it will come when filming returns to Ireland, along the lines of 'Ripper Street returns to Ireland and so do Irish cast' (crap headline but ykwim!)
Ripper Street 2 premiered in New Zealand last night, do we have any New Zealand fans out there? Next week in episode 2 you get to meet Damien's character, DC Albert Flight!
I just saw a tweet you favourited domino, sounds like Damien will be in series three then?
I'm not holding my breath for official confirmation or otherwise given how long we had to wait last year. I think we'll stick at being twitter detectives and find out for ourselves!
I hate to keep channeling Hal cynicism, but I did some detectiving. That guy is a set medic. I don't think it's likely he knows anything for sure. He seems to have become buddies with Damien whilst filming. He might just be assuming Damien will be back.

Yes whimsy, agree....hence why I am withholding from celebrating, or retweeting that tweet.,, I wasn't going to even post it but as Lisa mentioned it, thought I would!
Nevertheless, official news should be coming this week, so fingers crossed we will be put out of our misery very soon, either way!
I think if Damien is in RS3 then there will be a lot of heads exploding with excitement! Imagine the headline - worldwide epidemic of women whose heads have exploded!
I'm feeling a little more optimistic after the 'aftermath of series 2 finale' comments. When series 2 was written they wouldn't have known that it was going to be cancelled so with Flight's story not properly finshed off at the end of series 2 then surely they would have been planning on continuing with the character in series 3.
Can't wait to hear one way or the other because the not knowing is driving me crazy!
My thoughts exactly, Rosie - to everything you've said....but specifically about the 'aftermath...' comments. In fact...I'm becoming more and more convinced that Flight HAS to be in s3 and am starting to realise just how gutted I will be if he isn't.....
It would be really disappointing - we need to know what happens to Flight! I am preparing myself if he is in it that he might not have a happy ending to his story. It was distressing enough seeing him crying in the cells! Oh the wobbly chin!
I'm wondering how on earth the storyline will deal with the aftermath of series two when series three will be four years in the future... my mind is boggling. And if Flight is back then how exactly? Will Reid and co. have shown him mercy and he's working his way back into having them trust him again? If he's in series three then i'm very curious as to find out how...thought for sure his story was done after the s2 finale, whether the show had gotten a recommission without the cancellation happening instead...
The 4 year gap worries me too. Perhaps Flight helps them bring down Shine somehow and Reid supports him - I think at the end Reid has some sympathy for Flight. Or perhaps Flight has been in prison and is then released and they somehow come across him. Or Flight has gone back to his bad ways and he gets arrested by Reid...
Welll Flight was perfectly willing to help them bring Shine down in the series 2 finale until Shine played his trump card and showed them Flight's (juvenile i assume) record and it was essentially game over. He wouldn't be a credible witness.
I've wondered, should Flight be in series 3, if it was post a prison term and in that case, he couldn't be a detective any more unless he is given a chance to redeem himself by Reid upon his release, strings are pulled etc and he's a policeman once again but not a detective, perhaps he has to prove himself by working from the bottom upwards.
This is all pure supposition of course, we don't know for a fact that Damien will be back. Chances are he won't be and it's all moot.

There are infinite possibilities for Flight with the 4 year gap... the chronology doesn't add to the risk factor of Flight not being in it.. in my mind anyway. It actually gives potential for more possibilities and also the leap forward adds to the mystery for how things were resolved at the end of series 2, which i hope unravels itself in a glorious fashion and is not fleetingly explained. Or else... the Molonians shall descend upon Whitechapel, H-Division will need more re-inforcements than it has even needed before!!
I guess it all comes down to the writing...and whether a conceivable future for Flight can be conceived...there are some interesting theories already shared in this topic and elsewhere on the forum, but the conundrum remains for Abberline, Reid and H-Division that they cannot reveal they took in Flight, a former convicted criminal (or atleast that was their decision at the end of Series 2 when they released Shine) so how would they punish him? Reid's reaction to Flight and his speech about doing 'good work' was not without ambiguity.. it suggested he had softened a tiny bit.. and when he surely realises that he himself is not without vice ("kill him, kill him") Reid is bound to have a "who am I to judge" crisis! The majority of H-Division were ready to be disgusted with Flight, not seeing him as a victim of Shine's evil machinations.... but they were yet to find out the full extent of that situation... we were left on a cliffhanger where only Reid and Abberline knew. Will they conspire to cover up completely or even change Flight's true story? could they let him back into their ranks with that trust destoryed and his known criminal record including conspiracy to deraud? (twice now, I guess!) Will they cover up by perhaps sending Flight far far away (to America, to be with Evelyn for instance?) will Flight's shame lead him away from good work or be even more committed to it? would he end up in another profession (ahem Long Susan) or end up back on the streets?
See how many possibilities there are for Flight! He can't not be in it! Such an interesting character needs developing.
I think that Flight would have to use his knowledge of Shine to somehow entrap him into implicating himself for his crimes and so avoid revealing H-Division's complicity in the whole sorry business. That is if Shine survives the beating he got in the boxing match. I think bringing down Shine would be the only way Abberline would accept Flight back. I think Reid would see the good in Flight and see his potential as a detective and as Domino says Reid is not without his own moral ambiguities.
Domino, your comment about Flight's new 'profession' made me smile. Maybe his Argentine tango skills will come in handy after all ;0)
I agree that the 4 year gap isn't necessarily a problem as far a Flight's story is concerned. And (I know I've said this before - sorry!) a whole back story was created for Flight (unlike Hobbs) which wasn't necessary just for plot purposes.....so I find it hard to rationalise that they wouldn't continue his story. Reid was definately softening towards Flight when he said that he'd hoped to outrun his shame....and he defended him to Abberline when Abberline said he should be whipped (follwed by his little speech about evil men doing as they please while good men do what they can). I'm not sure he could continue as a detective, but I can't help thinking that he would have to somehow be instrumental in attempting to bring down Shine. They left his story completely hanging (we didn't even see him being put back in the cell...) which I know isn't any sort of guarantee, but certainly means it's open for him to still be in it.
And - come on!! How can they not want Damien back?!!
My final thought (for now!) is from Damien (from an interveiw with Metro in Feb)
"Were you surprised that Ripper Street was axed? The decision caused a lot of anger among fans. Yes I was, from a selfish point of view, because I had such fun doing it, filming over a summer in Dublin. ........... I think there were a lot of possibilities still open to the characters, including my own."
Good to see you Knightley! As soon as we have news we'll share it but in the meantime don't be a stranger... in times of quietness in DaMoland the forum needs all the help it can get!
Rosie, that is an ingenious idea, Flight having to provide Reid and all with enough ammunition to finish Shine for good. That is an excellent and believable possibility.... as you say, if Shine somehow comes back from that ultra beating at the end of the last series.
Lol, Long Susan is going to be even bigger and more bad ass in the next series, and her contempt for men in general has grown. Last series she was challenged to face what she asks of her fellow woman kind in her profession, perhaps her solution will be to have male employees! I had wondered if she may move into a more burlesque direction actually, seems fitting with the 1890s and arguably less exploitative.
Your words ring with truth fifi, agree, agree and agree! It seems nonsensical and bizarre not to have Flight back...and Damien's words you quoted gave me such a sure feeling at the time, especially as it is quite rare for him to speak out so forthrightly about his work.
It would have to be a brutal kind of downfall for Shine because again, if this did happen and went to court, Flight wouldn't be a credible witness given his own criminal past and i'm not sure Reid would go to bat for him so soon. BUT i could see Reid giving him another chance, as, i've said before, the three of them have had their secrets to hide...Jackson and Susan and their escape from her father, Drake and his military past and Reid and his wife and his own affair with Jane Cobden. I could see him doing giving Flight another chance and defying Abberline as before all of this unravelled for Flight, he was essentially a good copper, looking to be redeemed.
I'm a bit cautiously hopeful, but mainly cynical. I'd forgotten about Damien's words in that interview.
My main worries are that the writers in choosing to move the storyline 4 years later wanted to go in a completely new direction. (although as I understand it, they had the story planned before the cancellation) I just find it hard to fit in Flight, unless he's connected to finishing up Shine's story, but Shine's story arc basically played out - he was the big baddie for the series, and they effectively brought him down in the fight (and conceivably justice was served soon after.)
As has been pointed out before, this show is about the three main detectives. The only other male supporting characters that made it from series to series are Arterton (who frankly feels like the comic relief), Abberline (understandable to see the "overall picture" in the policing aspect) and Best (understandable to show the friction/relationship of the newspapers with the police of the time; The Ripper was a 'sensation' in the media) Flight feels like he was introduced for two reasons - to provide a Hobbs substitute that Reid troubled over & to be the mole. Abberline is surely dead set against him - besides his record, Abberline was VERY personally affronted to find out that Flight had lied to him. Reid might be sympathetic, but as in his own words 'good men do as they are allowed'. Reid even had to shake hands with Shine and not pursue him even though they knew he murdered that other copper. And even if they were still able to use Flight to bring down Shine, I doubt they would have kept him on. Reid-Jackson-Drake are the team. There isn't room for a 4th wheel so to speak.
But I hope to be proved wrong!!!!
As an aside, I wonder if Susan will now be a more "respectable" business woman, no longer in the brothel business. As you say domino, more into the burlesque is possible. Especially if she'll still support Rose's dream of "making it". There has been no mention of Cobden. If this series is going to be "grittier" why do I doubt Reid settled down into any sort of relationship. I think part of what drives the three detectives in their police work IS their personal troubles.

whimsy - I think in my case it's more a case of subborn blind optimism, rather than confidence - if I keep insisting that it should happen, then maybe it will!
I agree that Abberline took Flight's betrayal...badly. Which is one reason why I find it hard to imagine that Flight could return as a detective (and I very much agree that the series revolves around the 3 main detectives) - but that in itself is no reason why he can't return at all.... (I'm pretty sure that Abberline made Reid and Shine shake hands before he knew about Shine's activities? - not sure he was quite so neutral by the end)
I disagree that Shine's story played out.....I am kind of assuming that he will still be DI in Whitechapel (or he would've been somehow disposed of at the end of s2, surely?) and will continue to be a thorn in Reid's side (or a spanner in Reid's side/a thorn in his shoe! (sorry!!)) but he obviously can't be brought down by official means - he has protected himself too well.....and so the only way is through less legitimate means...and if Flight is no longer in the police force - and also wants to bring down Shine.....and could be working for Long Susan(!!), who has pledged to revenge herself on Duggan, who worked with Shine....
Am I getting a bit carried away now? OK - I'll stop!!
