Have to agree Su.
Whilst this may have been closest to the book, this was my least favourite of the adaptations I have seen/heard. I was a bit disappointed with the music choices - maybe I just adore the film too much.
This is very much an ensemble piece & we knew Damien's part wasn't one of the most prominent roles so I was surprised at how much we actually did hear him.
All in all it was well performed but just felt a little flat for me.

I listened two and a half times. I've never seen the film or any adaptation at all so the first time I was super excited and it WAS funny. But, maybe it's because I'm American and can't distinguish too well, don't hate me for mistaking this, but there were times that the actor playing Jimmy was talking and I thought it was him. Like at the beginning when he was saying shite, shite, coma shite (something like that) I totally thought that was Damien. So when I listened again I realized how little he was innit. I think he had more lines as Niall than James. And I don't actually like that type of music, so... I don't think this one will be on rotation anytime soon.
But they probably had a blast recording, you could tell.

I have listened to it all on iPlayer and really enjoyed it apart from there not being enough Damien! I could pick out his voice easily. He has a cultured Irish accent which was deliberate for this piece.
Caught up with this this afternoon. I found it quite disjointing to listen to, but I think that was because of all the pauses more than anything else - after all, it's quite a lot of book for under an hour's worth of play!
Knowing the story also made it a bit easier to keep up with what was going on as it was occasionally a little hard to understand, especially when there was a bit of shouting going on.
Damien's part was small, but perfectly formed as always Such a melodic voice, especially compared with some of the other characters, although he's supposed be quite posh whereas most of the other characters are "salt of the earth".
It was good fun, certainly, but I'd listen to his other radio work over this I think.
Damien has a very distinctive radio voice, I thought i would have more trouble picking him out from the other cast, but no! Lol maybe a bit posh, he was definitely meant to be a bit of a mega geek !
4 days left to listen on the iplayer, though it is being broadcast again on Saturday at 9pm!
is anyone catching the other Roddy Doyle plays on radio 4? Iam about to listen to 'the Snapper' which is on.... now!
I must say, last night I had trouble falling to sleep. So I thought I would try and put this on and it worked! I fell right to sleep! It worked with student stories last week too. I guess his voice is just so soothing..... ;)

This was a lovely message, and I hate to sound ungrateful....and I know that Damien has been pretty busy.....but the year isn't quite so new anymore, and it would be a good time to hear some more news from Gemma right now!
wow I am quite taken aback by your post fifi, because believe it or not I contacted Gemma on the day you posted it! (!!!!) (are you psychic?!)
It was just a general hello, but I did ask if there was any Damo radio news, her reply:
"Nothing new as yet but we have stacks of productions coming up later this year and love to work with him again so watch this space…. As soon as we have him confirmed in anything I PROMISE you will be the first to know!"
Lol, domino. If I were psychic I would've already known the answer! I shall try to be patient, trust Gemma and wait for her to give us some good news.....soon!!
