@rubyrosettared thank you for highlighting that intriguing line - it registered on my radar but i didnt stop and dwell... now I am itching to find out the context!

@whimsy that does look like Flight reaching for her hand! and you are not alone in wishing for a little romance... not sure f it would be the keep one foot on the floor kind of romance - I suspect this to be the kind - but it would be awesome if all the hottest action is not reserved solely for Jackson !

@fifi not wishing to sway you one way or the other, but in the cast list there is a priest..but that doesn't necessarily imply his confession! (though i think it is!)

 OK....I'm swayed!

So good to see that pic in the TV times that I almost don't care what it says.....almost!  But not sure what Jackson could teach him......he has charm and wit - oh no....hang on....that's not right, is it?!

And mine for most of the afternoon spent vacuuming and dusting prior to having the photos taken of the house for our pending move to a bungalow - if we can find one suitable!

I am going to my painting class this morning, come what may!

Tonight's Ripper Street episode is recommended viewing by the Metro and the Guardian:

The Ultimate Guide TV Picks 18/11/2013 | The Metro

Ripper Street, BBC1, 9pm
The surprise demise of an officer of the law sees an Irish prisoner – jailed for a prison blast that killed innocent civilians – set loose on the streets of Whitechapel. In an explosive chain of events, a rampantly anti-Irish parliamentarian is murdered and bright spark Detective Constable Albert Flight (Being Human’s Damien Molony) is sent undercover to flush out the killer – or killers. A gritty cop drama to be relished as much for its language as the crimes under scrutiny.

TV Highlights nov 18 | The Guardian

Ripper Street
9pm, BBC1

After two decades banged up in Newgate, dynamiter Aiden Galvin escapes from custody into the dark streets of Reid's Whitechapel manor. Worse, Galvin, a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, is soon up to his old tricks again, targeting an MP famed for his opposition to Irish home rule. But are things quite what they seem? A cleverly scripted story of corruption and the nascent electricity-generating industry that finds naive copper DC Flight (Damien Molony of Being Human) having to prove his mettle. Jonathan Wright

The spoiler phrases does include "bless em father, for I have sinned", so I think the confession will be this episode.

I thought he was brilliant. The beginning in the confessional told us what he couldn't tell Evelyn. Then the scene at the end really got to me!

A lovely, solid performance by Damien as always.

Flight comes across as rather innocent, not drinking (though i can understand why, apparently his father died from the drink) and his mum dying when he was small. I could speculate his wanting to impress Reid could stem from an absent father (down the pub all the time) and neglect. The 'bless me father for i have sinned' opener was intriguing, was it supposed to be after everything that had happened or does it pertain to something else.

Loved that Evelyn called him 'lemonade', that suited him i thought. The scene between Reid, Jackson, Drake and Flight was a bit of a hoot, I had a feeling what was going to happen to Flight, to give him that black eye, i felt so sorry for him. And i felt the first stirrings of acceptance for Flight within the group during that scene too. His youth was alluded to once or twice by Abberline, Jackson and Drake. And wow, he did look young, he looked several years younger than his twenty nine years.

I'm married to an electrician so i found the storyline of the burgeoning electricity industry interesting too as well as the relationship between Jane and Edmund. He seemed to nip any impropriety firmly in the bud at the end but i wonder whether he truly has?

But Flight fell hard for Evelyn (lovely performance too by Charlie Murphy) and it hurt him to see her walk away and i think it hurt us a little bit too. I also thought the actor playing Aidan Galvin put in a pretty solid performance, felt a little sympathy for him but none whatsoever for his sidekick who sizzled himself on the transformer thingumajig.

I'll find the time to watch this again on iPlayer because of circumstances, i think i missed a lot of dialogue.

That was fantastic!  And wasn't Damien brilliant?!  I'm feeling stupidly proud......

Thanks for the screencaps, domino.  They are, as always, wonderful!

I would've thought that the confession was chronologically at the beginning of the ep - and so I reckon that it's a lie that we are, as yet, unaware of.........I'd imagine that it's got something to do with his big secret.  And a precurser to the little bit of insight we got into his personal life.  I really hope so anyway.......I'm rather excited by the prospect that there is more to learn about him!

I'm sure I'll have more to say when I've watched it again (which I'm about to do now!)

Agree Lisa and fifi - we thought we may find out what he was confessing to in this episode, but "I'm a liar" has only added to the intrigue! now that we have had glimpses of his backstory i wonder if it is to do with this - and how his past makes him as dedicated and determined as he is? I find it increasingly hard to see him as a real baddie because as we get to know him more we do see how young he is, and in this episode again, his good heartedness.

I am about to have a re-watch too!!

The episode is now available on the BBC iplayer (including in wonderful HD!)

Ripper Street was absolutely trounced by 'I'm a Celebrity' (or as i have now christened it, I'm a Z-Lebrity, Resurrect My Career!'), it pulled three times the viewers that Ripper Street did. It goes to show that some folk will watch any old tripe (or are just masochists.) 3.3 million to 10.8. Numbers down again from last week where it made just over 4 million. I'm wondering whether the move to a Monday night was a bit of a bad idea. Like Downton Abbey, IAC is a bit of a juggernaut so i'm hoping numbers will recover. And i hope for those who watch via Iplayer etc to bolster the numbers.

I noticed a few of the continuity errors in the pub. When he first enters and approaches the bar, his hair is sticking up and literally from one shot to the next it's flattened down but there'd be no time to flatten it down IYSWIM.

Now...Flight's confession at the beginning. It makes it interesting if the episode was chronological because it alludes to secrets, which we're aware of. I interpreted it as lying to Evelyn. Bearing in mind he's so young (and his youth was a central theme, he was called 'lad' and similar throughout and out of work clothes he looked incredibly young and so different) and he hasn't really been on the force long. I don't think he's had time to develop any kind of a shell, or an ability to separate truth from lies where work is concerned. I think the fact he doesn't drink, the pep talk from the boys etc spoke of his inexperience. So i firmly believe lying to someone, especially someone he was obviously developing feelings for, would sit uncomfortably for him. But that is just supposition, i suppose as the series unfolds, that may come to bite me on the backside and he is indeed an accomplished liar and has played everyone. Time will tell. (Wouldn't it be something if he was a spy for Shine? wow!)

That was absolutely wonderful and the only thing I would complain about is that he actually still had a rather small amount of screen time.  I could have done without the whole smoking goat...

I have now watched this episode 3 times and I can actually say it gets better and better.  First time always miss about half the dialog.  By the third time I could finally concentrate on the non-Flight things and got the whole picture.

Fifi, I too feel a bit stupidly proud.  Every time he's on the screen I get this big silly grin on my face!  First time I watched thank goodness I was alone, because each time I saw him I screamed out loud and clapped and might have even said "oh yum" once or twice. molonyeffect

By the time I had to sit to watch with the hubby I was able to bite my lip and just keep it down to the silly grin... tangentially...the hubby turns to me and says "I keep expecting him to turn his head and hiss with fangs out." LMAO

He looks like a baby and it was absolutely heartbreaking to see his performance and the rejection at the end.  When he talked about his parents and we learn about his father dead because of drinking  - put his lack of in great perspective. loved when he choked on the whiskey and I loved Evelyn for telling him he didn't have to drink to impress her.  In the scene in her room when he talked about heritage and she said "you scare me" - he looked all of 18, and actually almost another man entirely. And the scene at the end, when he comes in and finds her saying her goodbyes - his eyes fall when she says she's leaving and when he sits down with her to wait, the sweet look he gives her, he even bites his lip.... oh le sigh.

So, yes, very much sympathize with Flight.  Good hearted & sweet & maybe even a bit innocent?  He pulled back when she kissed him and touched his lip almost in wonder.  That didn't feel like a planned "undercover" act, it was a true reaction.  He was very bashful with Mrs. Drake as well. And of course the lip touching brought back memories of Hal looking in the mirror and touching his cheek and that's where I lost it.....

I yelled at the screen when she left.  So what if he isn't who he says he is!  I wonder why he deliberately pushed her away.  He obviously had developed true feelings for her, as the sad look and tears show. (and his chin wobbled, bless him!) But he hid that from her.  I wonder if he went back to see if he could continue being Bertrand with her only to discover she was leaving? As soon as she questioned him his accent changed, his demeanor changed, even the way he held himself.  He was now Flight.  Which btw, I loved this scene for the fact that Damien changed so clearly.  He's good at that isn't he!

As for the confession - I found it hard to believe that he was confessing about lying to Evelyn since he did it as part of his job.  I think we are meant to think that the events in the episode are what he is confessing, but it's actually something else altogether.  We get a glimpse into his past here - you can see the nostalgia in him when he's listening to the men singing in the bar, the bits he told her about his parents were true, you get a sense that he was really connecting with her about their heritage.  And then there's the little teaser from Jackson.  Something about building the lie with parts of truth... I will look it up tomorrow.

Off to see if I can make a very quick gif before bed.

One last thing - lovely screencaps domino.  Thank you!

oh also, interesting that the kiss shot in the "next time" preview was not actually shown in the episode.  They used a different angle.  Not sure if I'm pleased or not about that.  Of course I wanted to see more of the Flight action in that bedroom...

and WOW, the lighting on him when Jackson was giving him advice!  (as shown in the 6th screencap on the first batch above from this evening)  It was incredibly just wow!

A review that I couldn't agree more with:

Damien Molony and Charlie Murphy light up the screen in Ripper Street

Though they were only given brief moments to work with, there was tangible emotion at play as lies blurred with truth and fate had its way with the pair of them.

There are times when Ripper Street isn’t quite sure what to do with all the riches at its disposal. I’d have happily sacrificed some of the philosophical musing in favour of allowing Bertrand and Evelyn more time to relish their brief moment in the sun.
