Yes indeedly, there was plenty of Molony Effect in this episode whimsy, we need to get a light effect emoticon!
molonyeffect

We have not had much of a chance to connect with Flight as a character, partly due to him being a slightly ambiguous character and not having enough screen time (in my view). But last night's ep changed that - Damien gave a performance with characteristic depth and compelling emotional layering, pulling us in to Albert world a bit more..which was no less ambiguous or intriguing just far fuller!

and maybe our sympathies were drawn in a big way for the first time, not only for the Evelyn storyline and his own personal history but how about that scene were the 3 men decide he needed a black eye? ouch! it was funny but also a little like teasing the new boy, plus fists!

Thank you for posting the review whimsy, i just put the same one in the review section, its a fab one, but i would go the whole way and give both performances 5 stars!

don't forget to cast your vote at the top of the thread people!

Even if there wasn't so much Damien, then I would still think it was another good episode. An intriguing story with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until at least halfway through and a great cast. Quite a few continuity errors though which bugged me somewhat (how did the ice pack get from Evelyn to Flight so quickly? And he was running his fingers through his hair in one shot and not in the next - ARGH!)

However, of course it was brilliant to see Damien on the screen so much (kinda!) and for him to have a meaty storyline. I, obviously, loved all the kissing and stuff - and how teenage to have one's Dad barge in on you having a fumble in the bedroom! - but thought the scenes in the bar and outside were amazing, and the scene with the other three and the punch was hilarious. I love the fact that he's much more than a side-show and that he's being integrated into the team as a whole; almost a foursome rather than a threesome. And I'm always floored by the slack jaw, gives me goosebumps!

But why was his name not in the main credits? I was quite annoyed by that. He was the bottom name in the credits at the end as well! He was far more important in the episode than that!

Oh yes, also loved the part where he looked so crestfallen, then pissed off as he said "I'll go and look in the Archives shall I?" then so happy when Abberline tells him he's going undercover...so sweet.

Having got over the initial....excitement over last night's episode, I'm feeling more and more surprised that there is still so much to learn about Flight!

I had kinda assumed that we would get a lot of Flight backstory in this ep....and in actual fact we've only learned enough to make him even more intriguing.  Last night's story only gave us a small glimpse - although I agree, domino, that it's now impossible to imagine that he is essentially a bad man.

But we still have no idea what his secrets are - which are part of his character profile - not to mention the confessional bit being used in the series trailer - and so surely must be important?  The little bit of insight which we got effectively created a very sympathetic character....and the 'pep talk' scene seemed to demonstrate a lot of affection - they may have laughed at him a little (and...yeah...ok, Drake gave him a black eye!), but it was in a very inclusive, good natured sort of way......it felt more as if he was part of the 'team'.  We are now half way through the series, but it feels a bit as though there is still of lot more to find out about Flight.....

Agree Fifi. And the best thing about a story arc where we're only being dripfed information is that it means he's a character that's here to stay! I would be very surprised if he isn't in Series 3 (if there is one!)

Fingers crossed ladies, for a series 3 ..and for Damien in it!

It feels to me like we are on a knife edge with Flight and his future at H-Division, and it could go ether way, I am enjoying that suspense.
After his undercover mission, which was a success, will he have gone some way into being more embraced by the main characters? in this episode there was still reservation from Reid due to Flight's innocence and youth and by Drake and Reid who enjoy ribbing him..though I did love the scene where Jackson imparted his wisdoms in how manipulate a woman into falling for you and Drake gave Flight the shiner. (that was a surprise.. i had imagined he had acquired the new injury in the line of duty..well i guess he did but only tangentially)

And Flight's backstory is bubbling away int he background with his big secret as yet unrevealed...this adds a very delicious tension not only to his character arc and the over all storyline, but to the fate of his character in Ripper Street!

I cannot imagine the falling asleep incident being left as a loose end...do we think that had anything to do with his confession?

When he was following the escapee, I was getting worried that he would be caught and wondered whether he was only in these few episodes. I needn't have as it turned out. Kicking the door down in the laboratory was a new aspect of Flight!

Pearl I loved the part where Flight was kicking the door down, was that a new side to him or was he just desperate to get out? either way, all thigh flexing greatly appreciated!

Ruby I read about the ratings, haven't people heard of +1 if they had to watch IAC? meh....

The Shine theory has been discussed a fair bit, my feelings were that he has shown himself to be too good hearted to be a totally baddass conspirator but after last night's episode I am wondering....what if he was lead astray?

One of the most powerful Flight moments this episode, even though he was undercover trying to get information, was during his speech about parents and knowing yourself:
"The idea, the way other folks say it is I mean, it's our family instruct us, is it not? to tell us who we are how we should be? without that instruction it's hard sometimes I find to make sense of ourselves, what we want, what is right.."

Ahhh yes, that line is so brilliant isn't it? You could feel his heartache as he said it. The whole script was really good last night I thought, this episode (and last week's) is definitely better, in my view anyway, compared to the first two when it felt as thought they were shoehorning too many threads. This one was a simpler story (although with complex twists) and played out a lot better.

Just got through with a rewatch on Iplayer. Picked up on more.

I assumed his dad died from alcoholism later in his childhood, hence his aversion to alcohol but no, it would seem his father died not long after his mum, so perhaps when he was six or seven. This is all the more intriguing. How did he survive, there were no foster homes or social services back then, he was responsible for his own well being (i know there were ragged schools etc in England but not entirely sure whether such existed in Ireland, if indeed he was born in Ireland (and maybe is British but with Irish parentage) and perhaps came over to England to better himself as a youth) So many possibilities but i think there is a shred of truth in everything he shared with Evelyn.

Now the confession, he's actually wearing the same cravat/tie from when he's about to be sent undercover by Abberline so i'm thinking maybe the confession happened before the undercover mission.

Sorry i did not pick up on your reply sooner Lisa, yes agree with you about Flight's childhood and I am increasingly beginning to feel that this past is somehow related to his secret....certainly to his sense of self in present day.

Oohhh.... thank you for that notion... i had not considered that the chronology of his confession may not be linear....

I just finished watching it. Finally got my Damien fix.  We need more face time!!!!  I enjoy the show but I wish he had a leading role and not a smallish part.  It was so nice to see him get a lot of face time in this episode.  It's going to be hard to go back to less Flight in the next episode.

Glad you managed to watch Jane!

Yes, this was completely Damien's episode, lots of facetime but also his performance kind of stole the whole thing, such a subtle nuance performance but with incredible impact - as we keep saying, he shone.

I do agree with you about wishing he had more to do in other episodes, but Ripper Street is an unusual drama in that it has a few mainish characters - Long Susan, Rose.... and Damien so far has had more consistency than any of those, he has in fact been in every episode since his introduction to some degree, unlike any of the others!

Ok, I watched this episode three times and had a bit of an idea...  I may be totally out in space here, but

I think Flight's secret is that he's Abberline's bastard son.

Abberline brought him in to H Division.  He suggested him for this undercover work and when Reid told him Abberline had work for him, he perked up.  When Flight came back "rebuffed", Abberline made a comment about not being up for the work, he looked dejected.  In Flight's speech with Evelyn, he spoke about not having a family to guide you to be who you are.  I think he's "eager to please", trying to prove himself to Abberline, not necessarily the H Division guys.

Am I reading things that aren't there?

Ok, thoughts??

I think Flight's reactions are his general eagerness to please, to fit in and be accepted, and to advance.

He told Evelyn that the story of his parents was true.  His father drunk himself to death.

There is still the fact that Fllight is not a very Irish name.  And Abberline's body language/encouragement is a bit, I don't know, indulgent?  Maybe he does know something about Flight.

Hmm...I guess I'm reading a lot into it, but I do think Abberline is involved.  Maybe I heard it, about his parents, that his mother was killed by typhus and his father took to drinking after that, and maybe abandoned him.  Thanks for hearing me out!  Can't wait to see what comes!

This episode was perfect. Altho, he broke my heart at the end. So sad sitting there on that bench...

AND I want to know more about his past!

I did not notice any differences from the uk showing but I need notice that it was just as great as the first viewing. And I am pretty sure I squeed everytime flight came on screen. Also, I loved knightly's commentary throughout ;)
