So..what theories for Flight's fate in the finale?

I am sticking to mine, Flight's only chance of redemption in Reid and H-Division eyes is that Flight shoots Shine or somehow saves Reid or Drake from Shine and kills Shine! AND I also think that there will be a point of dilemma for Flight where he has to choose between the 2 'father figures' Shine and Reed, and because he wants to be "a good man", I suspect he chooses Reid and that will dictate his actions.

I still think that there will be a Flight/Shine showdown in the boxing ring.

With the 'kill him' dialogue spoiler, i'm wondering whether that's Shine commanding Flight to do so and Flight won't, maybe instead turning the gun on Shine and killing him instead. As you've said, he wants to be a good man and this might redeem him but either way, whether Flight lives or dies, it will be curtains for him and probably his career too. Unless H Division can find it within themselves to forgive/understand and offer him a second chance (highly unlikely)

And what i would really like is there to be an announcement on Tuesday that a deal has been reached for a third and possibly fourth series of Ripper Street.

Yes, there has to be the moment of choice for Flight!

I cannot even contemplate the worst case scenario... and genuinely still believe, however dark Ripper Street is, we wouldn't have been given all those confessional scenes and all the Flight angst if it were not all leading towards this point of choice and final showdown.. proving in actions that his moral compass does indeed point towards goodness. This isn't because I need him to be a hero, but i think if he just was a one note a bad 'un it wouldn't be as textured a character and it wouldn't be Ripper Street.

On that note..... I don't think it is going to be a neat and clean cut either. Ripper Street is not like that. The writers did not know the show was ending (fingers crossed a way will be found for it not to!) and although I am convinced there will be a bringing to a head of matters (we saw that in the preview anyway) there may well be remaining ambiguity and loose ends with Flight's story!

I can't form coherent though.  Just WOW!  The whole episode was just phenomenal, and Damien... Flight's secrets... OMG.  Incredible performance.  I sit here still breathless half an hour later, I feel like my heart's been ripped to shreds and my gut's been punched.  Like I was in that boxing ring.  HE KNEW about Merrick.  And his secret was more unscrupulous than I had imagined.  I actually feared for his life at one point, when they put Shine in the cells too.  I need time to process more...

What a performance!

I think he is one of the most brilliant actors I have ever seen! And I've seen a few in my time. From him playing Lord Hal Yorke with all his different personalities, to this where he is so flawed. How many other people could play such a part and have such an effect on us all?

I saw his name and my first thought was 'uh oh' but i'm pleased he made it out alive.

First thoughts are: Incredible performances by ALL of the cast. I was on the edge of my seat all the way through.

I'm glad that Flight confessed to his role in the whole thing, rather than he be discovered. That Abberline wanted to punish him but Reid didn't said a lot too. So if there's a third series, then maybe Flight looking to become that good man would be a good storyline to investigate, i don't think his story is done.

I don't think any of their tales are told to be honest, all were wide open to more.

wow!! i am in still shock! I don't quite understand the big reveal scene. ok, so i get that he admitted to being a spy and all for shine, but what was the papers that shine gave to reid? i couldnt really read them too well. I can't bleieve they just ended it there! least he made it out alive. I counted and flight was in a total of 5 scenes this time. incredible episode, performances by all etc. all that stuff that has already been said. so intense! and i agree whole heartedly with pearl. his talent knows no bounds and it just keeps getting better and better each time. truly exceptional. I love talented actors who just so happen to be very good looking.

Flight had form before becoming a policeman. I'm sure someone will have a screen grab of the shot but fraud and deception was one of the charges and he used to make gin and tainted it with sulphur and worse which caused customers to lose their sight, so apart from Flight being a spy for Shine, he'd done bad things in the past (c. 1885) but he promised Reid that the work he'd done at H Division had been honest and good and i think it was then that Reid thought to show him some mercy. I think if there's a third series and Flight is still there, it would be a good theme for his character to explore.

I cheered when Duggan got his come uppance as well as Susan telling him exactly what she thought of him and refusing Jackson, telling him that nothing had changed. Girl power Victorian style.

The boxing match between Drake and Shine was uncompromising and brutal and so well choreographed. I didn't think it would be Reid that would shout 'kill him' (thought it would be Shine) and it was one heck of a place to end it.

I think if i had one little quibble for this series then for more time to explore Flight's character, it felt a bit too rushed in the last episodes, it would've been nice to have had a bit more revealed here and there because while his secrets were shocking, i thought they were a little too far fetched because while we had Flight's confession scenes, we didn't really get to know the man behind them, a bit more Flight back story would've been nice i think but it's a very minor quibble because series two has been exceptional, the last two episodes really stepped up to the plate; excellent writing, performances and tension!

Again, i hope a deal can be made between BBC and Love Film or someone similar. This show is just too good to be left by the way side.

I really need to get some sleep so will write more tomorrow (and of course come to Flight chat) but the story about the gin didn't sit well with me, so I did a little research.

You'll note his arrest record is from 1885.  This was presumably when Shine found, as he said, Flight as the "little Paddy wretch".  That was 5 yrs prior to current events and Flight is by all accounts still young. He looks young (when he's down in the cells and Shine is presenting his case Damien looks like he's 15!) and they refer to him as young.  So when he was doing all this "bad stuff" he was likely very young, a teen.  And we know he was an orphan, likely I think a street urchin just trying to survive.  The way he ate that sandwich - he probably went hungry quite a bit.

One of his arrests was for illicit distilling - this is the gin with the sulfur and turpentine.  However, he did not taint it on purpose.  Sulfur is a byproduct of the the fermentation and if improper distilling equipment is used - say by an inexperienced, impoverished young man making moonshine - then the sulfur remains in the alcohol.  You need to use a copper still, or at least the tubing has to be copper because the copper catalyses the breakdown of sulfuric compounds in the steam vapors, or in other words breaks it down and absorbs it.  Copper is more expensive however and steel is more durable, so you can imagine he would have used a steel still.  As for the turpentine, it was a common additive in cheap gin until the 20th century to give it the juniper berry flavour without using the actual juniper berries.

So he didn't make bad gin with malicious intent - he just made it cheap.

Oh also, I too am extremely glad he confessed to Reid.  When he told Reid he wanted to outrun his shameful deeds, you could see in Reid understanding and sympathy.  And of course Reid is opposed to whipping him.  (though did anyone else think about the fact that a whipping would involve no shirt?  no, just me. ok...)  Plus since Drake did not kill Shine, they need Flight's testimony to get justice.

I believe there would be a great chance of Flight redeeming himself in the eyes of Reid and H-Division.  After all, they all have secrets and things they are ashamed of.

Now we just need to get that Series 3 commissioned! *crossing fingers all the tweets and petitions and emails make a difference*

It does make you wonder what the outcome would have been if it had been Whitechapel where Flight had done his teenage crime (I agree also that he would have been 15-ish when arrested in 1885) and Reid the arresting officer. A mere mile down the road and things could all have been different...

It did feel as though some loose ends were sorted - Duggan, for a start (but who gets all his property??) - but there are still plenty of unanswered questions and, yes, what happens to Flight?

I don't know whether the poisoning happened accidentally whimsy, the impression i got from that scene was that maybe he did, he knew it was wrong and it was one of the driving reasons why he strived to be a good man. I think if it had been an accident then he would've said so. I think the fact that he had an inkling that it was wrong was what got Shine's attention in the first place. I think Shine saw his youth and how impressionable he possibly was and manipulated it.  I'd like to believe that perhaps it was during his time at H Division, he 'saw the light' and that was why he sought a priest's confession. Perhaps he saw something he admired in Reid, that this was a man he could actually look up to. So while i don't disagree that the sulphur and turpentine can be a side effect/accidental so to speak, i don't think in Flight's case, it was an accident.

I'd have to watch it again but i'm sure he also said something about evil, pertaining to himself which could be Catholic guilt coming to the fore, but it was that too that gave me the impression that he wasn't exactly an angel in all of this.
