RIPPER STREET IS COMING BACK!

This was circulating on Twitter as a rumour this morning, but an article via The Guardian looks far more promising than an internet rumour!

BBC's Ripper Street could return with new funding partner

Quote:

Reports of Ripper Street's demise may be premature. The Victorian crime drama's producer is understood to be in talks with potential backers including video-on-demand company LoveFilm, after the BBC confirmed earlier this month that it would not fund a third series.

The deal said to be in the offing would see Amazon-owned LoveFilm funding most of Ripper Street's budget, in return for premiering the third series online in the UK, with an option to commission a fourth. BBC1 would air the show shortly after its LoveFilm premiere.

No deal has been signed, it is understood, but if Ripper Street producer Tiger Aspect can successfully conclude negotiations it would mark a significant moment in the funding of UK TV drama.

It would be the first time a VOD company has stepped in to become the majority-funder of an already established UK TV drama, with the BBC effectively acquiring the show as a pre-sale. In the US VOD company Netflix has funded the return of Arrested Development.

A Tiger Aspect spokesman said, "The creative team have great vision and high ambition for future series of Ripper Street. It would of course be marvellous to find a route to make these plans reality."

A BBC spokeswoman said: "The BBC is looking at partnerships that could enable Ripper Street to return but at better value to licence fee payers."

Agree with you all!

However, one has to point out....

BBC license fee £145.50 per year x Over 17,000 people signatures on save the Ripper Street petition = £2,473,500.

that is a LOT of money and as funders of the BBC we should have a say HOW THAT IS SPENT!

I got this reply from BBC Complaints. Anyone else get one too.

"Thanks for your contact regarding ‘Ripper Street’ broadcast on BBC One.

We understand you are unhappy that the series hasn't been recommissioned.

While it had been announced that Ripper Street would not be returning, we are currently looking at partnerships that could enable its return but at better value to licence fee payers. We will be able to provide more information on this in due course.

Nevertheless, as we are guided by audience feedback, please be assured that your concerns have been registered to our audience log. This is a daily report of audience feedback made available throughout the BBC, including to programme producers, as well as members of senior management.

The audience logs help to shape future decisions regarding BBC programming and output.

Kind Regards

BBC Complaints"

It is very encouraging that the BBC are publicly acknowledging there are options, it would seem like waving a red rag to a bull if nothing came of it, considering the consternation already over their decision to cancel the drama.
Keeping everythgin crossed for us the audience but moreso for the writers, actors, creators who need a chance to at least give Ripper Street an ending!!

And if there is no series 3, atleast a one off special 'Miracle on RIpper Street' may happen after all!

The plot thickens, with BBC America stepping in with their word on the possible future of Ripper Street!

http://communityvoices.post-gazette.com/arts-entertainment-living/tuned-in/item/37656-press-tour-whither-bbc-america-s-ripper-street

"  BBC America senior vice president of programming Richard De Croce said the show's obituary should not yet be written.  "

"   When I asked De Croce if the show would be done after season two, he replied, "To be deteremined.

"There are a lot of conversations going on about the potential ways the show can return," De Croce continued. "We're big fans of 'Ripper.' We really, really love the show and if we can bring it back, we will do so."

I asked if BBC America has given up on it the way the BBC did.

"BBC America has not," De Croce said. "The BBC will be involved if it goes forward but to be honest it's a little early to say."

Because they want to see its ratings for season two on BBC America?

"No, we would  be committed to more episodes," he said. "The conversations are going on in the UK that we're a part of but also being discussed is the future of the franchise."  "

It's good to know that there appear to be options on the table.  I wish that Being Human UK had gotten so much support...and I think it would have if there hadn't been a Being Human US already.

Agree Jane, but also Being Human was a BBC Three show, BBC One is afar more mainstream channel and ergo has a wider audience. I wish BBC One had taken on Being Human.
Ripper Street has had far more support due to that wider reach in my opinion.

Looks like we can take that question mark and turn it into an exclamation one because DM Barcroft has just posted that he's at a Ripper Street Press Conference RIGHT NOW!!!
