Damien is going to be back on the stage again!

The Royal & Derngate (Northampton) and the Gate Theatre, London announced today that Damien will appear alongside William Gaminara in 'A Body Of An American' which is written by Dan O'Brien (Damien read from his award winning poetry collection 'War Reporter' at the Forward Prizes for poetry 1st October this year).

The Gate Theatre London 16th January - 8th February info & tickets here

The Royal & Derngate 27th February - 8th March - info and tickets here

The production is described below:

Winner Of The 2013 PEN Award For Drama
By Dan O'Brien
A Co-Production With Gate Theatre

Mogadishu, 1993. Paul Watson is a Canadian photojournalist who is about to take a picture that will win him the Pulitzer Prize.

Princeton, 2013, Dan O’Brien is an American writer who is struggling to finish his play about ghosts. Both men live worlds apart but a chance encounter over the airwaves sparks an extraordinary friendship that sees them journey from one of the most dangerous places on earth to the depths of the human soul.

Flying from Kabul to the Canadian High Arctic, The Body Of An American is an exhilarating new form of documentary drama that splices the dialogue with actual recordings and photographs by Paul Watson. Performed in an intimate studio space created in our Underground, this production places these two men’s battles – both public and private – against a backdrop of some of the world’s most iconic images of war.

I knew I recognised Dan O'Brien's name, but couldn't remember where from!

I hopefully can get a ticket to this, but it falls within a bad time for me with other commitments and potential new work, but I will make a darn good effort to get there!

Just noticed there is a 'post show talkback' on 3 March!

I hope plenty of forumers can make it and those of us who cannot look forward to hearing all about it!

I've just seen the post show thing on the site, which makes me a bit more interested in going on the 3rd, but I'm already busy on the 1st, 2nd and 7th, so it's all a little mental then...It's only an hour or so outside of London though so will try my bestest to get there!

I'm trying to convince myself I wouldn't want to see this play anyway, it doesn't sound like my sort of thing, but... ANYTHING WITH DAMO IN IT WOULD BE MY SORT OF THING.

Actually I don't know what to make about the story.  I'm sure it's good.

I'm thinking he plays the American.  The Canadian is the older one I believe, since the synopsis says he took the picture in 1993, then they move on to 2013.

Bit off topic but... do you reckon this precludes any possible involvement with Dr. Who?  Filming is about to start...

I'm in London on February 1st with my sister and my brother in law to visit the Cheapside Hoard exhibition. If i hadn't had my daughter tagging along, i would've sweethearted my sister in getting a couple of tickets for us but as it is, i think my daughter at almost 13 would be too young to see it (or maybe understand and i know i'd get eyes rolled at me from her in the process...)

The Northampton dates are out because my OH's birthday is around then and my kids will have just gone back to school/college after half term.

The fates are absolutely conspiring against me :(

Ruby, would the BiL be willing to hang out with DD for a couple hours while you and your sister went off to see this?  Tell them timing is serendipitous - that you happen to be in town at a time he's doing a play, seems a shame to waste the opportunity.  They could consider it your Birthday & Christmas present for the year! biggrin

I'm sure he wouldn't mind if i asked but schematics would be difficult, given the day itself will be a long one with a very early start (4 am or thereabouts), it may just be too much. When i was in London seeing Andrew Gower's play, we had a similar time start and by early evening i was dropping from exhaustion and the hotel we're staying in is outside of London with a train journey to and from it. It's a nice daydream but not really feasible, though i have mentioned the play (including a link) to my sister via email this evening....

I'm exhausted just reading about your plans!  Well, maybe it can get worked in somehow. crossing fingers for you.

If not, maybe the next one.  I'll daydream that we get plenty of notice, it's at a workable time that both of us (mainly you) can somehow manage to go see it...  I can dream...

So happy that the venue is so close to where I live, I'd be a fool to pass up this opportunity to see him! The only thing holding me back is that it does not sound like my type of play AT ALL, but ah well :)

damoismyman (giggles at the name) you could see when some of the other forumers are going to be there and meet up with them.  Will make the evening more fun, even if the subject matter of the play isn't what you might like.  I guess the hashtag #BHFieldtrip doesn't really apply anymore, so, #DamoFieldtrip?  biggrin I believe a group is going on 1st of March in Northampton, a couple others on 23rd January in London.

Also wondering if there may be any news footage on this, like If You Don't Let Us Dream, which was also for a short run, but also groundbreaking in its approach. The play has won awards and focusses on war reportage, so that may be a newsy kind of thing.

It's a very small play - the Gate holds only 70 people and the Underground at Derngate only 200 or so, so I'd be surprised if it makes any national coverage, but it may get on the local news in Northampton and probably the theatre listings and things here in London.

Not booked a ticket yet, waiting to see if my husband is interested, but may join the throng on the 23rd otherwise. Northampton's dates are just too difficult for me to get to atm, especially as my work is so up in the air...

Oops! So I just booked tickets to see this at the Gate in January on top of the tickets I bought yesterday for Northampton in March.

Merry Christmas & Happy Birthday to me!

I live in the UK but find it very trying to go to the theatre here.   I live on the Isle of Wight and it is very expensive to travel to the mainland which adds quite a bit to the cost of an evening out.  The boats are very intermittent late at night which means a hotel - more expense!
