Loved the cigarette/car comment in the sense of him saying it, but hated it in terms of him as a Police Officer. He could have derailed the investigation if Laurie had taken real offence to it and it felt unprofessional to me. As we know, this becomes more relevant as the series goes on in terms of his impatience...
As an aside, Toby's a minor. Shouldn't he have had an 'appropriate adult' with him?
I feel this is also the first time we see that Jack is not above bending the rules to get what he wants.

its possible jack should not have carried on questioning Toby at that point Kat - he told laurie he would just watch tv or play games with toby or something. But we knew from his character profile he bends the rules... al these bits we notice, i think, are aspects of that
Agree with you whimsy, I mean, that was little unprofessional but also not, he was handling the situation as anyone could when someone else looses his temper.
Precisely. I think the story progression and Damien's performance did well in how it introduced us to the different aspects of Jacks personality. Subtle hints at first.

Kat, I didn't think he had a short fuse, I felt he'd been dealing with a cagey Laurie for a while and since Laurie was having a little breakdown this was a sort of "slap in the face, get it together man" type of outburst.

Scenes 22, 23, At HQ Jack and Charlie watch cctv of Laurie in off license with Robbie, Jack questions Laurie about Robbie (10 mins)
Scene 22: 12.45-13.21
Back at HQ Charlie and Jack look at cctv footage of Laurie in the off license. The footage shows him buying a lot of alcohol at 3.09 pm and then later in the evening
Scene 23: 13.22-14.20
Jack is interviewing Laurie while we are shown more cctv footage from 8.31pm on the same evening, where he is seen buying more alcohol and arguing with Robbie, who is serving him. Laurie says he had never liked him and Jack asked if he could have said anything to upset him.
If he believes Laurie is just being useless - as a bereft father - then he definitely shouldn't have said that. It makes more sense in the terms of Jack suspecting him and being angry than treating a victim so harshly.
So now we are back at HQ, and Charlie has got some cctv of Robbie and Laurie in the offlicense. Laurie is in the family room when jack interviews him at this stage, not the horrible bleak one (yet)
Kat, there's also the fact that, as Martha points out, often the missing children cases come back to family members. Since Laurie was acting so cagey, and couple that with the odds (and possibly his past experience in these cases), then he would not presume innocence, but approach the case assuming Laurie was a Suspect off the bat.
