To celebrate Shakespeare's 450th birthday today

here is a reminder of Damien as Edmund in King Lear 

(Shakespeare in Styria 2010.)

This would have been a fab play to see, Damien would have played a deliciously evil Edmund!

but...

 

if you could pick a Shakespeare character and play for Damien,

who / what would it be.. and why?!?!

thanks for getting into the spirit Glofigs and Aldo!

Glofigs, I can see Damien as Oberon, King Of The Faeries and there is perhaps just enough ambiguity in his character for Damien to bring his hallmark nuance to... who would play Titania? It would make a change to see him in a 'comedy' too, something lighter, although the defintition of a Shakespeare comedy is not the same as the commonly assumed definition. I'm not as familiar with Iago / Othello... but if I recall he is a baddy, and a charmer... we know Damien can do that very well indeed!

Aldo, I must admit that Hamlet, albeit an obvious choice perhaps, was the first that came into my mind too. I'd love to see Damien in the role in his acting career. Agree that he is a fabulous tragic character but moreso with Hamlet the level of angst....he is the supremest angstiest character of all. I can actually see Damien delivering the main soliloquies in my minds eye!

How about Macbeth - he is a multidimensional character, and tragic indeed!

Surprised noone has mentioned Romeo..............

I have Puck from A Midsummer's Night Dream in my head for him. I could see him playing someone mischeivous like that. I remember seeing the 1939 (i think) movie and Mickey Rooney played the role with mischief and lightness. I think Damien's youthful (good) looks could play to his advantage. I do know Lee Ingleby played that role back in, again i think, 2000 and was very good.

I saw David Tennant play Romeo before he got the role of Doctor Who and he was excellent (back when he toured, i saw it at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle, it might have been in 2001/2, after my daughter was born, i remember it being a treat out from my sister and brother in law as i hadn't been out since her birth...but i digress...) so yes, could definitely see Damien in that role too, once more he has his youth and his great looks as well as acting chops (well d'uh!)

aw, I think I could see a Puck in Damo too Lisa! it wouldn't be my first choice, if we could only choose one it would def be Hamlet, but maybe in the top ten somewhere, because it wold be good to see something lighter for balance!



 

David Tennant played Hamlet too of course... I long to see Damien deliver this - possibly one of the most famous Shakespeare soliloquy...

He is too old for Romeo who was about 18! I would love him to play Malvolio in Twelfth Night. I think he would be great.

Depends if traditional I guess... Last actor I saw playing Romeo wasn't 18 and that was in Stratford upon Avon... That was the cast in 2010...

I wondered if Damien would be too old to play Romeo but as Kallie says it depends on how the performance is produced. People do so many interesting things with Shakespeare plays, how they interpret them. I was in a performance of a Midsummer Night's Dream at school where the fairies were American aerobics instructors for some reason which I have completely forgotten but I'm sure we all thought was brilliantly funny at the time! I also saw a production of Hamlet where the 'play within the play' was performed with puppets accompanied by a soundtrack of Alice in Chains songs.

I would prefer him to be in a comedy, rather than a tragedy! However, one of the kings might be good.

Would it be too shallow to say any part? First saw Damien on stage so although Hal is my favourite character, on stage will always be extra special.

I agree with Pearl about Romeo...in fact in my mind even 18 is pushing it! 

Kallie - just because somebody's done it doesn't make it right biggrin  Even if it's the RSC - lol!!  I once saw John Nettles do Shakespeare in Stratford (a Henry I think) and it was hands down the worst thing I have ever witnessed on a stage!!
