Eek I'm the first to vote and comment - the pressure!

At the risk of being totally predictable I'm going to say Flight (although the picture of Jack makes him look very lost in thought and mysterious!).

Again, I don't yet know enough about Hal to say whether he is the most mysterious - although being a vampire is pretty mysterious!

Jack is probably the character we know the least about but I actually think that matters the least in terms of Suspects. Suspects is so in the moment that it doesn't really matter whether we know anything of Jack's back story or not - it doesn't add or detract anything from the actual story of each episode. To me, Jack wears his heart on his sleeve in terms of all his emotions being on show. Nothing is really hidden in terms of the way he feels about things so he seems less mysterious. It would be interesting to know more about Jack (to make the character more rounded - he's not just his job) but it doesn't bug me that we don't know more about him! In some ways it would make Suspects like all the other police shows if there was a subplot for each of the main characters too - Suspects makes you focus on the matter in hand and the way the police investigate it as it happens.

Everything about Flight is mysterious particularly as everything we thought we knew about him is completely turned on its head by the revelations of episode 7 and 8. He creates an image of himself so that people see him the way he wants them to see him, but who is the real Albert Flight? We don't even know if Albert Flight is his real name. His behaviour seems to change depending on who he is with - the way he is with Reid is completely different to the way he is with Shine. He seems more at ease when he is Betrand Doyle with Evelyn, he always seems so buttoned up and repressed at Leman Street. Even his clothes seem to be restricting him - it's like he has to keep everything tightly constrained to stop his truth coming out. We don't know why he left Ireland, when he arrived in London, was he on his own, how did he get involved in crime in the first place? What is the real nature of his relationship with Shine? How and why did he become a policeman in the first place considering his criminal record? How does Flight really feel about what he has done? So many questions and so few answers! We get little glimpses of who he is which makes his character so interesting - it's better that we find out little by little and that our first impressions are turned about completely as the story goes along.

Well done on being the first to comment Rosie!

Hal has over 500 years of mystery to unravel.. and even more fudamentally... he is a deep character with many layers that are far more complex than black /white, vampire/human... he is almost unfathomable in some ways in Being Human.

Flight is introduced to us as a man of secrets in Ripper Street....and as you say Rosie, depsite revlations being made at the end of the series, there are still many unknowns and the journey to those revelations was filled with suspense and intrigue...

Jack is an almost complete unknown..the tiny glimmers we see in rooftop scenes in Suspects or moments of joking between characters are precious nuggets we cling on to for clues to his character beyond being a detective... so although he may not be a mysterious man in himself, he is a man of total mystery to us!

Aaarrghh......!!!!  Are you determined to melt my brain, domino?!

I also risk being totally predictable....and voting for Hal!  But I shall refrain - and give it some careful consideration.  I do agree totally with everything that Rosie has said - although we know very little about Jack...the nature of the programme means that he doesn't seem mysterious.  I guess it depends on you definition....we may not know much about his past, or his present circumstances - but he isn't actually hiding anything and his emotions are all pretty much on display.

Unlike both Flight and Hal.

Flight has very deliberately set about creating a new persona for himself in an attempt to escape/hide his past which means that, as yet, he has hidden depths.  Hal hides/lies about aspects of his past - and, indeed, his nature, but - despite Alex telling him that she doesn't know what he's capable of - I really don't think there is much doubt about his potential....

There is still a lot that we don't know about Flight,  but with a whole 500 yrs of history, and seemingly endless facets to his personality, it feels as if what we know about Hal barely scratches the surface - I suspect that Hal is a mystery even to himself.....

So...Flight or Hal??!  This may take some time......

I have to say, I'm in complete agreement with Rosie.

Jack doesn't seem mysterious at all, as Rosie said he wears his emotions on his sleeve.  We don't have much of a back story nor home life, but the little bits and pieces we've gleaned have satisfactorily given him some depth without raising any mysterious questions.  He seems straightforward a hard-working, capable, empathetic, bloke who maybe used to party a bit, likes the rush of adrenalized situations, but is following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather of being a good detective.  And yes I would love to see him out of the work context, but it doesn't detract from the show/story.

Hal of course has 500 years of good to bad to good to worse... and in many ways I definitely see him as the most complex of the three.  There is the mystery of "good Hal" vs "bad Hal", in terms of can we truly believe he has multiple personas, if it's a coping mechanism, or if it's just the excuse invented by an addict... The mystery of his human life to explore, what abuses did he endure, was he "a good man" or was there a streak of bad in him... Thousands of women would love to see him seduce...

but despite 500 years of story we haven't seen, despite his complexity, despite the fact that we know he lies, both to his friends and to himself, he puts on a mask, I feel in any ways we've cracked Hal.  He's OCD, neurotic, sardonic, selfish, fastedious, puritanical, dependent, odd, kind, loyal, remorseful, suicidey when he's good Hal; charismatic, seductive, capable, controlling, sadistic, cruel, selfish, lethal, reveling, power-hungry, bloodthirsty, homocidal, self-preserving when he's bad Hal.

Flight is a complete mystery.  We know he was orphaned, he did petty (and not so petty) crimes, he got in with the wrong type of benefactor, he's good at "desk work", he's a terrible fighter, he's remorseful about his past and wants to be a good man...  But I feel we don't "KNOW" him.  He like Hal seems to wear a mask most of the time, he definitely acts differently depending on who he's with, even to the point of changing his accent (and I'm not just talking with Evelyn undercover where his Irish lilt became more pronounced.  He's arrogant and resentful most of the time, eager at others (would add meek, but even when eager, he's not that) But again, for some reason even with all this, I feel we've never seen the TRUE Albert Flight.  I like to think Bertrand was closer to his true self, but there really is no confirmation.  Unlike with Jack, the fact that we haven't seen him outside of work has added an air of mystery to him.

I voted for Hal because I can't help it.  It's like compulsive.

I think they're all equally mysterious in their own ways.

Maybe it's because I write Hal, I've had to get in his head and figure him out (or at least my own interpretation of him) that he's not as much of a mystery to me.   And I certainly could be misinterpreting him, even after lengthy discussions on him here, with other fic writers...

And by mystery I don't mean that he isn't complex and compelling, of the three he tops my list for those.  But I do feel that Damien showed us so much of his complexity in his performance whereas Flight he purposely kept very shrouded.  Hal has a mysterious past, the details of which we know only a teeny portion of, but we do know his patterns, his motivations.  In both his incarnations, good and bad.  He has bared his soul, so to speak, on many occasions.

Flight on the other hand wears his four-piece suits like armour, keeping his vulnerability shrouded with arrogance and confidence.  It was only his last scene that we saw a crack in his shell, perhaps the truth to him.  I just feel we haven't seen enough of his vulnerabilities to get a good sense of his true motivations.

Whimsy, I know what you mean about really having to figure the character out to write about them - I've been writing a lot about Flight but I still don't think I really know him. He definitely hides his vulnerability and I agree that Bertrand Doyle is probably more the real Flight than the Flight we see the rest of the time. Because of the life we assume that he had - he says his father drank so perhaps we assume he has been abused (he seems terrified of the violence that his 'new father figures' do to others), the people he has been caught up with - his wariness of revealing his truth self is understandable. Or perhaps there are worse things he has done which he can't even admit to himself let alone to others. I think if we see him in series 3 there will be more revelations to come. I always think of Flight as a lost, lonely little boy, desperately trying to do the right thing but never being able to achieve it. I think that he has told so many lies and kept so many secrets that he probably doesn't even know who he really is. Flight makes me feel really sad and it is the little glimpses of vulnerability which make me love him despite the terrible things he has done. It was the way he touched his fingers to his lip when Evelyn kissed him that did it for me!

I've never been able to figure out why Flight is such a terrible fighter when he is supposed to have lived in this tough area of London, been a criminal and also been in the police for a few years. His 'mentor' is a bare knuckle boxer undefeated for 10 years in all divisional competitions! How does Flight not know how to fight?!

Whimsy - I appreciate that in order to write about Hal, you need to pin down his personality and motivations....but, despite the years of obsessing about Hal, and discussing him, I have to say that I still feel I don't really understand him at all.  And I regularly change my mind about what I think his motivations are.

I would love to know what sort of man he was before he was turned...and which aspects of his vampire personality are human (and vice versa...)

Why does he go through this good/bad cycle (it's not typical of all vampires - Herrick, Mr Snow, Ivan, Hetty don't seem to have this issue)..and how long has it been going on for?  What made him decide that humanity did derserve his loyalty...sometimes?

Why did he lie to Lady Mary for so long...and how/why did he continue to visit her every year (including Bad Hal??)  And why did he leave her if she was keeping him 'clean'?

What is the link between his blood-lust and his vamp nature - the two don't always seem connected....?

If he didn't really believe in the devil...what was his motivation for telling Lady Catherine that they were at war with the devil, and for entering into a pact with her...and performing the ritual?  What exactly was the nature of his feelings for her?  He appears to be in full bad hal mode....and she's a werewolf!  And surely bad hal would revel at being in a full scale vampire/werewolf war?

Why exactly did he stay in Barry when he knew that the old ones were coming and how hard it would be for him to resist Mr Snow? And how exactly did Mr Snow's influence work?

Why did he recruit Cutler?  According to Herrick (in s3) the old ones don't recruit lightly...

What about the inconsistancy in his bad hal personality?  He is very different in 1850 to 1918 to 1950....

How on earth did he survive for 500yrs, when he seems incapable of winning a fight!?

How come a brothel bastard, who ran away to sea and ended up on a battlefield has such beautiful hands!?

..............

OK....I'll stop now!!

I have to say Rosie, you have such an excellent points its hard to even try to disagree with you biggrin  But I haven't voted yet, cause I was thinking (without good thinking) vote for Flight and then I really started to think about all these characters.

I waited so I could read more arguments about these characters and see if anyone can give me kind of direction, support some of my views and maybe change them or give new point of view. It's so hard to decide when you go deeper in this subject, I change my mind constantly so I think I needed some good arguments to argument with my arguments in my head.

Jack is out of the picture, like said he is the guy without back story, he drops some little crumbs here and there about his life but he seems so normal, hard working man, you can relate him for any normal person. When I sit back and thought about this character and read your excellent arguments about him I realized they support my first thoughts about Jack. He didn't pop in to my mind first, there was a reason but no words and now I have found words why Jack less mysterious character comparing on these three.

But Hal and Flight. You could even write the word "mysterious" on Albert's forehead, he is the man of mysterious past, mysterious friends, mysterious future. But Hal has most mysterious mind.

SPOILER ALERT: I YOU HAVEN'T WATCH BH OR THAT LAST EXTRA SCENE AND YOU DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE ENDING STOP READING RIGHT NOW!!! (unless you really, really want to, I can't stop you, but I can warn you).

But then I started thinking about the extra scene on BH dvd where they showed  how Hal, Alex and Tom were enjoying their human life (finally). Hal has two personalities. Good and bad. And when he was "being human" finally he first seemed to be good Hal, even though in that last scene when Tom ask are you good Hal or bad Hal and he answers: "both, neither, I can't explain it". And those last scenes and that extra scene troubles me. And then when he realize it's just Devils illusion, I can see that bad Hal coming out again.

Talk about mystery, that whole guy is a mystery. He has two personalities that switch places century after century and you could think that is affect from his long life and things he have done, like that lady Mary ghost who was completely nuts and then she was not, you know something about his past and yet you know only glimpses, just like you know about Flight.

Maybe we know more about Hal than Flight which makes Flight kind of easy choice (at least I think he would be), but Hal's head is twitched by blood and age and no one can actually know what is going on in there. That last extra scene kind of prove me that, what do you think?

OK YOU CAN START READING NOW AGAIN :)

So my point really is that Hal is pretty mysterious because he has twitched mind and long past and we don't know all about it and those things about his past that makes Hal switch personality between good Hal and bad Hal. fangs

I can't decide. Yet. But I love this topic domino, put my mind to work confuse And it seems I'm not the only one wink

Fifi, I love you!

yes, yes YES!  I want to know all these things too.  and more... if only we could have more!!!!!!!

But I still feel Hal is easy to read.  His underlying motivation is survival and acceptance.  All the time.  As a human surely his life was ruled by survival.  As a young (pretty) boy in a brothel, born into poverty, as an (inexperienced) seaman, as a young (also inexperienced) mercenary... He learned to be quick witted and charismatic to survive.  And having 6 mothers, never knowing which was the true one, he mourned them all... surely he craved love, acceptance, a declaration of parentage, and he never got that.  That's why when he's bad he becomes "the biggest kid in the playground", his ambition comes to the forefront, he leads with an iron fist.  He will not get love from the vampires, he'll settle for obedience, devotion, admiration.  And when he's good, he hints at suicide, many instances he eggs people to kill him, tries it himself, but he will never go through with it, always lets himself get talked out of it.  That's why he laments the fact that he knows it's a dream.  Part of him wants to end it all, but he will always choose survival, even if it comes at a price, as when he chose to become a vampire in the first place.  How many BH vampires do we know actually CHOSE?  And as for acceptance, that's why I feel the blood isn't the catalyst to him.  He doesn't snap, doesn't give up, until the people who have become his support system, the ones he loves, give up on him.

can someone shut me up now?!

After discussing an idea for a new Flight story with one of my friends it dawned on me that I have definitely been writing Flight the way I want him to be, how I have interpreted him. My friend's response to my question was "your version of Flight would do that but I'm not sure the 'real' Flight would. I like your version of Flight but not the Flight on tv".

Lol whimsy - and I love you too!

I will have to take time to read through all of these comments properly sometime.  But just now I'm being amused by the fact that while we seem to have dismissed Jack and are deliberating over Hal and Flight....Jack seems to have pulled ahead in the poll....!

I am not surprised by the Jack votes, ultimately he is a COMPLETE mystery as nothing is known about his background, or his 'life' beyond the moments we see of him being a detective! whereas with Hal and Flight, we are given parts of their backstory, their behaviours, motivations, fears, dreams.............

This was difficult.

I think of Hal as a Man of History. He's been around for pretty much all of it from Henry VIII onwards. We know bits and pieces, from his prequel to little bits offered here and there. It's still not his entire history though.

Flight...throughout the second series we didn't really get any kind of a hint til towards the end and again, bits and pieces. We knew his parents died when he was a child, he had been in trouble with the law as a youth and thus attracted Shine's attention and was in his thrall and that he wanted to become a better man.

If you want to talk about being mysterious in knowing absolutely NOTHING about a character then Jack Weston would be the one and that is because we literally know nothing because it's the show's premise (for now) that it's all about the police work and not necessarily the coppers themselves. Damien has hinted at who he thinks Weston is but that's just his supposition and the mention of a sister may or may not be true, it could've been a ruse to get the witness/suspect to open up.

And the beauty of all three of these characters is, fan fic writers such as myself can take them in any direction they wish (and have done so with two of them)

After all of that, my vote went to Flight. He was deliberately a man of mystery and all the more intriguing for it (which i suppose you could argue for all three of them, hence the difficulty)

Thanks for adding your vote and thoughts Lisa!

Flight was described as a 'man of secrets' before we met him so our fascination with discovery was kindled pre- Flight and his secrets were not fully revealed for the entire series, the suspense and intrigue was powerful.. some people bemoaned the fact, saying that his character arc had fizzled out because it was so drawn out... i felt the contrary.

Reponses to this poll very much depend on your definition of mysterious.... Jack is the most mysterious in the sense that he is the least 'known' ... but it he the most emigmatic, intriguing, perplexing....?

mysterious
mɪˈstɪərɪəs/
adjective
adjective: mysterious
  1. difficult or impossible to understand, explain, or identify.
"his colleague had vanished in mysterious circumstances"

Exactly, domino - as far as I'm concerned lack of knowledge of a person's past or present circumstances does not necessarily make a mysterious character - it has as much to do, as whimsy said, with their motivations....what makes them tick - and, for me, although Jack's personal circumstances may be unknown, he is not a mysterious character.....

So it's still between Hal and Flight....and I'm definately starting to lean towards Hal (always....!!)

Flight was a man of secrets...but I feel that by the end of ep8 he's been pretty much laid bare....

Having been orphaned while young, he ends up as a young man, surviving in London by distilling dodgy gin (he tells Shine "I was a bad man when you found me")  Shine describes him as "a paddy wretch destined for jail or an early grave", so he was hardly thriving - people are poisened, and Flight is arrested.  Shine offers him a get out of jail free card and a new life in exchange for his loyalty..and somehow installs him in Bloomsbury as a constable. With his new persona in place he hopes to be able to absolve himself of his past with hard work and 'good deeds' (as he tells the priest) and to 'outrun his shame'...to become the good man he so obviously wants to be.  But eventually he realises that his apparant benefactor, Shine, has 'made evil of him' and, having failed to rid himself of Shine's malevolence, the only way out is to come clean to Reid......

Whereas I can only echo Alex's sentiments about Hal - everytime I think I know who he is it turns out I'm wrong.....

Jozie - I think Hal is much more complicated than just good and bad....there are a lot of blurred lines.  But it is quite possible that he is simply insane  It only took 250 years for Lady Mary to go totally off her rocker and Cutler did say that all the blood that the old ones drank affected their minds...and Hal does, after all, repeat the same action over and over in the hope that he will achieve a different result.  Maybe his human life had already destroyed his sanity - and that's why he chose to become a vampire...... Who knows?!  It's all a total mystery to me.....

Good points fifi! I was thinking voting Hal too, because of his mysterious past and his mysterious nature. It's almost insane-like, and nobody really knows whats going on inside his head, except deep inside he wants to be good, and he show it many times. He regrets bad things he has done and tries really hard to be good. But sometimes bad side over powers him. I'm thinking some drug addict when I'm thinking Hal and sometimes the "rehab" fails. He got all time in the world to do his good-bad circle again and again (as he said, round and round we go). But is he really mysterious when this is so obvious?

I voted Flight, even though some of his pass was revealed in the last ep on RP season 2, there wasn't quite everything. Yet it feels that Flight is truly man of mystery cause he is really outsider in many ways. Cause we don't know him, he has no real friends, no one close to him, he keeps distance to everyone (why?). And he doesn't want to get known. In the end he wanted to be good man and tried to clear up his mistakes he made and confessed his crimes to Reed. But he didn't really tell who he is and what does he really want from future...
