It seemed like Jack was acting like a little child in scene 52 who was all like "But moooom it's unfair" and I absolutely love it. It fitted in Jack's character perfectly!
Now I have to say this, when I saw Jack smoking I was little surprised (and not) that Damien remembered that element from the last season. Whenever Jack was stressed too much in season 1 he smoked, in this season he smoked a lot. Maybe a message that Jack was being under lot of pressure.. Cause Damien doesn't smoke and this had to be happening by his free will (and not nice at all) it must have been important character element to Damien.
there is some pathos to jack at this point too though...he IS acting like a petulant child but he is also driven to the edges of frustration because he truly believes he is right... and when we get a massive clue as to why, it tugs a bit on the heart strings, no? that he has this wounded past, that is effecting his judgement?
When he said "tell that to my mother" I did gain a new level of sympathy towards his behaviour. I worried at this point that meant she was dead.
as much as I hate to admit it, Jack (Damien) makes smoking look hot...
but I agree, this was the perfect chance to get Charlie on his side. She completely invited him to confide in her, and he once again brushes her off, rudely. The tension throughout this whole episode had me on the edge of my seat, and it really wasn't about the case, it was about the deteriorating work relationship and friendship between Jack and Charlie. I'd come to see them as having almost an older brother/ younger sister relationship, with the banter and rivalry. It hurt to see him tearing that down.

glad you pointed that out Jozie, I agree that the smoking is a great tool, we knew from Series 1 that jack doesn't smoke but he did when he became really stressed. But, the prop is not what conveys that simmering intensity the best.. that is all Damien!

This is why I mentioned in the previous scene in the locker room where we see him getting his pack of cigarettes and lighter. We know form S1 E1 that he used to smoke, but no longer did, and the times before when we saw him smoking, he'd bummed one off of Charlie. But for him now to be carrying a packet spoke volumes.

It actually really pissed me off that Charlie had gone out for a smoke...and he not only brushes her off, but basically tells her to go back inside. And she puts it out and goes....I'd have told him to get stuffed!!
"Charlie, you know, I've bored myself half to death talking about it with people in the past, I'm not going to bore you with it to ok?"
This line made me feel all kinds of things at once. he is undeniably rude, but, also.... The fact that jack has talked to lots of people about "it" (and we don't know what it is yet) brings sympathy and concern. It is also a revelation about his past and his personal life. It suggests he has been even more troubled than he is now.
He does reject Charlie, but it is not such an aggressive rebuff, there is a bit of loneliness in there too, and not just that he doesn't want to go over it for himself but also a bit self punishing.. like he is sick of hearing himself go over and over it... and maybe a bit of self protection and protecting Charlie? I am not sensing he is protecting his position and doesn't want to undermine his own position of authority with Charlie, by making himself vulnerable.
Sorry guys I have to go, but this have been nice and awesome for a long time finally got to discuss about Suspects! It's a shame but I have to wake up after few hours, but I will read your comments later cause it's always interesting to see what other people think and how they saw different scenes.
Thank you domino for arranging this once again, I know it's time taking and not easy!
Jane, it did look like he'd taken up smoking again to me. Perhaps he'd just gotten that pack that day, with this case he knew he'd need them, and wanted to be alone rather than social when he smoked them. Not sure.
