This topic is for news and discussion on all things Ripper Street beyond series 2 and our beloved Albert Flight. Sniff.
The new series 3 will have its premiere on Amazon Instant Video, this autumn (an air date will be coming soon) and Amazon will be releasing extended, un-cut episodes. The (edited version of the) show will later be aired on BBC One and BBC America.
It surely looks like we won't see Albert Flight in Season 3 But, I'm hoping that Damien is just being teasy and keeps us in the dark, it makes me feel better to at least hope there might be change, even a short one to see Flight again!
I had a dream last night about Ripper Street 3. It was unexpectedly on itv tonight at 9pm which surprised me. In my dream I saw the first 15 minutes. Reid and Drake spent the whole time walking round a suburb of 1930s bungalows and modern cars were driving past. Odd! No sign of Flight though.
I'm still hoping we'll see Albert at least in one scene of the new series to round off the cliffhanger. It would be disappointing not to find out what happens to him.
I'm sorry, I'm finding it hard to be enthusiastic about S3 and I'm going to do a little rant. I watched S1 in anticipation of S2 when Damien was cast... and loved it! Then S2 came along and I loved it even more - despite the disappointments of how underutilized Damien (and indeed, art mirroring life, Flight) was. But the show is about the three main characters, so ok, I can live with it. Then that phenomenal cliffhanger ending and I thought, wow this can only get better!!!
When they announced S3 would move along 4 years, that began my worry. How could they give us that ending, then not follow up on it immediately? And the possibility of Damien not being in it aside, Joseph Mawle was incredible, Shine was despicable but mesmerizing, and I wanted more! But I knew then that the Shine/Flight storyline would be abandoned. Then S3 started filming, and besides the fact that we fans fought hard for it, both the official Ripper Street and Amazon posted all over the place that they were promising behind the scenes photos and reporting while filming - but then us hanging. I don't pretend to understand all the red tape and legalities of TV making, and the way they market things, but if they hadn't literally promised the behind the scenes it wouldn't have been so disappointing. No "sorry we wont be able to do that after all". No replies to inquiries. They totally strung us along about Damien being in it till even the last week of filming. And don't get me started on the lack of extras on the DVD...
So maybe we missed something. Maybe there will be a cameo. Certainly they will at least say SOMETHING about what happened to Flight, which can provide the fic writers with inspiration. I have Amazon Prime, so I will be tuning in because I loved the other characters, because it could end up being phenomenal and I'll be thinking Flight schmight within the first minutes... and because quite frankly there's very little good TV around. I just haven't reached the point where I'm actually looking forward to it.
Ok rant over.

I wonder if part of the problem was once the BBC cancelled it that the actors all looked for other work and this meant that some of them couldn't come back. Both MyAnna Buring and Jerome Flynn have had to fit filming round other projects and we know how busy Damien has been. Maybe he just wasn't able to commit to another series so they changed the plots. Of course this doesn't excuse the lack of behind the scenes stuff and exclusives but I'm guessing it's probably for legal reasons so Amazon can use it as part of their package.
It was really disappointing that Damien/Flight were under used in series 2 which made me think that the intention had been to develop the character further in series 3.
In a way I'd rather Flight's story is left to the imagination than they cobble together some weak ending for him just to round things off. I would be particularly unhappy if he ended up with Evelyn although him starting a new life somewhere would be ok. Shine was totally glorious and I'd love to see him continue to be a thorn in Reid's side.
Ripper Street Series Three will see the return of the notorious H Division, the police precinct charged with keeping order on the meanest streets imaginable: late Victorian Whitechapel.
Once again starring Matthew Macfadyen (Spooks, Robin Hood) as Detective Inspector Reid, Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones) as the newly promoted Detective Inspector Bennet Drake, Adam Rothenberg(Alcatraz) as Captain Homer Jackson, MyAnna Buring (The Descent, Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II) as Long Susan, and created by BAFTA nominated Richard Warlow, (Waking the Dead, Mistresses), the third series promises to be an even more vivid, sensual and violent drama that explores the lives of those who have seen the worst of humankind, but who nonetheless struggle each day to bring law to the lawless.
The series was commissioned by Amazon after legions of Ripper Street fans petitioned for its return and will include exclusive scenes that will not be shown on the BBC. A double bill of the first and second episodes will be available for Amazon Prime Instant Video members at 9pm on Friday 14th November, with a further six episodes to be released weekly at 9pm every Friday. The series will culminate in a series finale to be released on Boxing Day, Friday 26 December.
whimsy - love your rant....and yes, yes, yes to every word! I do feel a bit as though they've not really looked after the fans very well.
At the end of s2 it seemed pretty inconcievable to me that Flight wouldn't be in s3, but now it seems that it's not to be! Rosie has a very good point - the show was cancelled and the actors move on. They couldn't really have carried on without the main three, so Amazon would've bent over backwards to keep them, but, tbh, any other characters are easily dispensible. It'll be interesting to she if Shine is in it (I loved Shine!! ....in a sort of 'love to hate' kinda way!) 'cos if Joseph Mawle wasn't available either then an entire 'waiting to happen' storyline will have had to be rethought. Maybe (if Damien wanted to) then Flight could still come back in s4!!
I loved Joseph Mawle, Shine was a brilliant boo hiss kind of villain.
I don't see Damien being in series three at all. I got my hopes up earlier in the year when he tweeted from Dublin around the time filming began but he's since been busy with Suspects and this mysterious film role and now he's in rehearsals for a new play (and i know RS filming ended a few weeks ago anyway). With the new series being set four years in the future, i can't see how Flight could be in there, given where his character was at the end of series 2. I hope perhaps that he's mentioned in passing, as in where he is, what happened to him but i don't think we'll see him. Which is a shame because his character was seriously underutilised. We didn't really get a sense of him, not in the way we got the measure of Shine for example. I would've liked to have seen the series set perhaps six months after the events of s2 and a redemption theme for both Flight, Reid and Jackson especially.
I won't be paying for an Amazon subscription for this, i pay enough in tv license and Sky TV fees so i'll wait for this to show up on BBC 1, whenever they deign to show it.
I had been quite happy to wait for it to be on the BBC until Amazon said there would be exclusive scenes and now I'm not sure what to do! I hate the thought that people will be seeing something that I haven't because I am such a massive Ripper Street fan. It seems quite unusual that Amazon are showing this like a tv show with new episodes each week or is that normal?
I might get the chance to see Inspector Reid himself, Matthew MacFadyen, in a few weeks. His wife, Keeley Hawes is being given an honorary degree at the university I work at, and the rumour is that she is bringing Matthew as her guest. I am already swooning at the thought!
I'll be watching the new series on Amazon because
a) I love the show and don't want to wait until next year
b) I want to see if there is any resolution to Flight's storyline
c) the Amazon episodes will be uncut - the BBC versions will be edited!
As I said I will be watching as I have an Amazon Prime acct.
Rosie, fifi, what you said about the actors having made other commitments when the show was canceled certainly comes into play. However when they gave that press conference confirming S3 was a go, the writers said they had already started penning S3 while S2 was airing. They'd planned all along to fast forward the story. Seems likely Flight and Shine (and let's not forget Cobden, who was a magnificent strong female character) were never meant to continue. I think the series creators want to keep focus on the three main detectives, the two main female characters, and keep other characters revolving into and out of their lives as supportive roles. Flight had become "part of the team", but he would have been a 3rd wheel, or in this case a 4th!

The Amazon team have tweeted about Ripper Street coming onto Amazon Prime very soon and I sent a tweet saying "And no Albert Flight?" This is their reply:
Well done on getting a reply Pearl, that does seem a little more hopeful! but it would be super cruel to say that and then him not be in it.. sadly this would make me even more angry!
It is with great sadness that I agree with you on that Pearl. Ditto to the second part of my comment. But I neeeeed to keep a little (however in denial that is!) flame of hope alive in my heart for Flight!
The odds that the social media person for Amazon video would actually know details of the upcoming season are slim to none. Sounds like a standard reply to me.

Grrrrrr... First off, "soon enough"?!?! We'be been asking for 4 months! Second, why is it such a mystery? Telling us yay or nay isn't going to spoil the plot. If anything, knowing he is back would build excitement, knowing he isn't would prevent extreme dissapointment over having been teased into thinking there is a possibility.

Have to agree with this whimsy - I'm not even sure how much the RS account would know. And it seems so unlikely that Damien had time to do any RS filming that I really can't help thinking that they're both just trying to create a buzz. But I can't deny that it does ignite a little flicker of hope which is potentially really unfair.....
