I agree with a lot of the comments that everybody has made.  Becca summed it up - "Instead of being an adaptation of the book, .....the screenplay just seems to summarise the story and tries to pack all of the book in to a 1hr 40min film."  I was expecting it to be toned down, and it did manage to retain some of the cynicism from the book, but lost it's visciousness.... Stelfox in the book was completely loathsome, whereas in the film....yeah more just a prick (albeit a dangerous one!) Maybe if I hadn't read the book I'd have been more shocked.... I don't know!

The breaking the 4th wall worked brilliantly - it seemed very natural and unforced and was used very effectively.  Personally I thought Nic Hoult did a reasonable job...especially seeing as he was absolutely the focus of the whole film - I thought he carried the part quite well. As everyone else has said, the supporting cast were fantastic.....but sadly underused.  Generally I think it was the screenplay that was just....lacking.  It's hard not to compare the film to the book....and I definitely think the book was better.

It was funny - there are some excellent one liners (probaby lifted straight from the book.....) -  I smirked my way through most of it..... some of the other audience members were definitely laughing out loud.  And the soundtrack is brilliant!!

Despite having read some of the other comments on here, I think I was surprised by how much screen time Damo had.  He easily had as much screen time as many of the other more prominent characters, but his contribution to the plot was minimal - his function was mostly to pass snarky comments, from what I remember!  He did what he did brilliantly....but there certainly wasn't enough of him!!  It was great to see him up there though....and yes! I waited to see his name come up in the credits too - although the thought never occured to me to take a picture.

I will definitely buy the dvd....and will probably even watch it biggrin

I'd like to give it 3.5 stars..... Obviously there wasn't enough DaMo!  And it was 'OK' more than 'Good'.....but there is an infinity of infinitely worse films out there...and far fewer good films.  Hmm...I think I might have to give it 4.  Feels a little bit generous but I enjoyed the soundtrack no end - that's probably worth an extra half a star!

littleimpulse - it's odd when that happens.  I wonder if he'd booked that seat and decided if he was going to sit in just because he'd booked it?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts fifi! and for voting!

It is heartening to hear Damien had as much screen time as other minor characters! and looking forward to the snark!

It does beg the question why he is not featured in the promo materail credits at all though. hmm.

At last I can join the conversation and vote in the poll on Kill Your Friends!!!!

I gave it 4 stars! My thoughts are similar to many of those shared by everyone already, but to being with it was FUNNY! Funnier than I had expected after reading the book and the reviews. Something about bringing it to the screen and that visual energy gave it a whole extra level of comedy. This is a relief because I thought I might be too offended to find it funny. But, in the end, and very oddly, I didn't find it offensive enough. It was very toned down from the book - which, after we had been led to believe it hadn't been, was a bit weird. For it to be as edgy as promised it needed to be even edgier// but then it would have been a porno not a film, lol. But I wanted more of those Stelfox losing it moments, like the double take of him having dinner with the lazies. That was HILARIOUS.

The bones of the story are there and cleverly adapted to the screen I felt, the modifications were seamless and thank god for Rebecca's role.

Really importantly though it worked as a satire much better as a film than a book, for me at least. It really was a piss take and so funny!

Damien has for more on screen time and dialogue than I could possibly have imagined. What a treat to finally see his character at last! and that accent! haha! That in itself is hilarious, knowing that the whole thing is based on people and stuff that actually was going on in the music industry!!

The reason I only gave it 4 stars is because of the above lack of edginess and there is obviously not enough Damo. Plus, I am INCENSED that his name is not in the opening credits. Literally seething! It makes no effing sense whatsover - he has as much if not more screen time and dialogue than some of the others who do and is as if not more well known. A very sour note to what otherwise is a vivid and fun addition to our favourite actors filmography.

So glad you finally got to see this domino! And that you enjoyed it!! I pretty much agree with everything you've said...except I think I enjoyed the book more.  The film was undoubtedly funny -  but it did lack some of the book's edgyness.....the book is really quite visious!  Hmmm...I really need to get this dvd so I can watch it again!

Hi fifi! Yes finally!

I enjoyed the film as a satire more than the book, but both are different experiences and I liked both equally. In terms of satire the book had so much more exposition of Stelfox vileness in inner dialogue that it was almost too self gratuitous to work as a satire, for me. But the film really worked not only as a comedy but also in portraying these individuals satirically! It totally took the piss out of them and seemed to have more fun with itself! And that was more fun for me!

I thought it was OK, but much preferred the book. I quite liked the narration as a way of linking scenes, made it simple to follow what was happening. I found I missed aspects of the book - the group the Songbirds were so well described, for instance, and were so hilarious in the book, and just came over as stupid and vacant on screen. The reason the singer with the Lazies disliked Stelfox so much was glossed over, as was the apalling Rage. It was just toned down a bit much, for me.
Not enough Ross - there was more of him in the book! And why the mop top - Ross is described as having a crew cut!
I'm glad I watched it, just because of Damien but I can't see myself ever watching it again.
