This topic is for discussion on Clean Break availability internationally.
As far as we know it will be available on RTÉ One and on the RTÉ player (live and on catch up) to the Irish audience. We are crossing fingers it will also be available on the international RTÉ player, but have no news on this.
In an interview with the Irish Independent, Billy Roche (Clean Break writer) commented on the drama reaching international audiences:
Roche said the screenplay has been four or five years in the making, and that it will be a marked change to other crime series.
"The characters are more important than the crime to me, and I think that's what will stand to it," he said.
Roche added that he hoped that the show could introduce audiences abroad to Irish productions.
"I think it's about time we reach out and sell our goods abroad. We've lots of talent here - writers, actors, directors, everything. It's all here," he said.
"We haven't managed to do it yet, but I'm hoping that 'Clean Break' will be the one to bring it to the world and carve a way."
According to the Irish Times Clean Break will be distributed overseas by Content Media Group. RTÉ will announce some "very large deals" at MIPCOM 2015 in October.
RTÉ will announce “some very large deals” that will mean it “won’t have to fund these dramas on our own any more”, he said. The deals will allow it pay for the production of its future drama projects with the aid of money from international pre-sales."
Good news for many of us who have been asking about Clean Break's availabilty outside of Ireland.
Clean Break, made for RTÉ by Octagon Films and 152 Productions, will be distributed overseas by Content Media Group. The four-parter about the fallout from a kidnapping in “a small coastal community” – the distributor’s blurb doesn’t mention its Wexford setting by name – begins on RTÉ One on Sunday, September 27th.
From award-winning writer Billy Roche (The Eclipse) comes this striking tale of love, greed, status and revenge. Through the context of a small coastal community, Clean Break explores universally relevant themes, and how money, or the lack of it, can taint the people within.
Car dealer Frank Mallon has reached the end of his tether. His wife has left him, his cars aren’t selling and his teenage daughter is out of control. Now his bank manager Desmond Rane says he’s in financial trouble and needs to see him before the end of the week. Frank is rapidly running out of fiscal rope and is about to lose everything. So he comes up with a plan which will not only give him the means to survive but will also give him revenge on his tormentors.
However, as he joins up with local gangsters Noel Blake and Teeth, Frank soon catapults himself into even more trouble when his plan goes drastically wrong. The repercussions of his desperate actions will rock the people around him, but what Frank doesn’t know is that he’s just a cog in an even bigger plot, one driven by long held jealousies and revenge that will shock the entire town.
Featuring a fresh young cast and impactful stories with broad appeal, Clean Break uncovers the insidious power, politics and corruption that rise to the surface when a community without entitlement, and with nothing to lose, dares to protest.
Excellent news! My expectation that it will turn up on the BBC is feeling ever more justified!
I'm becoming very intregued by the way the synopsis are giving away little tidbits of info about all the characters and how they relate to each other/the story....with the exception of Danny. Who is still something of a mystery, despite the fact that he's appearing in so much of the promotional stuff..... Very curious!
I have made this into a 'news & discussion on Clean Break international availability' topic.
The issue has cropped up in many different places on the forum making the discussion hard to follow, so hopefully having it all in one place will be helpful.
Rosie and fifi it's very positive to have it confirmed Clean Break will be more widely available.
There is no indication when though, or which broadcaster(s). crossing fingers for at the same time / not too far after the Ireland premiere. I also hope it's available on digital platforms internationally too.
"We haven't managed to do it yet, but I'm hoping that 'Clean Break' will be the one to bring it to the world and carve a way."
I like the idea of Clean Break being the herald of Irish TV going international. Sounds like they've tried before without success? So something about Clean Break must have caught the eye of international distributors. Something must have universal appeal. From the bits we've seen, the cast is top notch, the story very dramatic but not dry.
And this:
"The characters are more important than the crime to me, and I think that's what will stand to it,"
YES! Character driven stories are so much more interesting, give the story so much depth. And we know that's something Damien excells at!
I'm very pleased and hopeful about this!

The synopsis gives the story a broader reach than we had previously, which would also give it broader appeal. So the community as a whole gets involved? This just keeps getting better and better!

Strange choice of words. maybe it is meant to be urban 'niche'? Clean Break is centred on a small town community rather than a big city crime drama set somewhere like Dublin.
Very Nice! Hope the score licensing to air all over the world!

Damien just keeps moving more and more into the international spotlight. What a great thing! It's especially cool because he doesn't look for notoriety or fame, he just chooses exceptional projects that challenge him as an actor. Every time he proves himself, more opportunities open up for the kinds of roles he loves. We are watching a great upward spiral in his career, and I'm very excited!

Now that the all region DVD is available worldwide, Clean Break's international distribution seem less of an issue (to us fans at least!)
There is no news on overseas sales from MIPCOM (now over), RTÉ did sell another of their new shows, 'Rebellion' (starring Damien's 'Tiger Raid' co-star Brian Gleeson) to a US network Sundance TV, but I have not seen anything on Clean Break.
That's what the DVD cover should have looked like! More dramatic and exciting. And big Damo on the front.

It is a stylish, powerful poster and would make a better DVD cover not only because it has Damien on it but also because it is more representative of the drama, imo. It also includes young Jenny Rane, who is pivotal to the entire drama and to all the other characters!
The tagline "desperate people do desperate things" along with the image of the characters and Jenny is powerful, thought provoking and more suggestive of the story line.
