Only one day until Suspects returns!

Here's my preview:

JACK IS BACK! – but has he strayed too far off track? Suspects Series 5 Episode 3 Preview

© Channel 5

© Channel 5

Jack is back when Suspects returns on Wednesday and we have a preview of Series 5 Episode 3!

The Suspects story continues with a grim case for the team in the third instalment of six-part Series 5, and things are about to get more complicated and even tougher for Jack.

The story so far…

The series opened with the tragic and shocking loss of DI Martha Bellamy (Fay Ripley), sending Jack on a hunt to find his boss’s killer. So far, the case has seen him pursue the main suspect Stan Turner (Sam Stockman) – with his hallmark headstrong and sometimes maverick style – without being able to convict him, despite Stan being at the centre of every thread he follows.

The investigation has also brought one of Jack’s exes into his life, Rose Harris (Karen Hassan) who was the main focus of the investigation in the last episode, where Jack also discovered he is probably a father.

Coming up..

In the upcoming episode the lines between Jack’s personal and professional lives become even blurrier, this time threatening to derail his career.

With Rose in prison, Jack has taken in sixteen old Lucy Harris (Lucy Carless) who he thinks could be his daughter. When Lucy becomes a key witness in a new investigation, Jack tries to keep things secret, putting long-term colleague Charlie (Clare-Hope Ashitey) in an impossible position when she finds out.

Check out the synopsis below. (Spoilers alert!)

Suspects Series 5 Episode 3 Synopsis

When a girl is raped on her way home, Jack tries to conceal his connection to the key witness in the case, Lucy. The 16-year-old has been living with him since he discovered that she is probably his daughter, and Charlie reluctantly agrees to keep his secret. However, it soon becomes clear that both girls are lying about that evening, and when more evidence emerges, Charlie cannot stay silent for much longer.

In the ‘next time’ preview for the episode, Charlie is seen telling Jack he has to inform DCI Daniel Drummond (James Murray) about Lucy, and TDC Gary Roscoe (Perry Fitzpatrick) asks her “Is the Sarge going to lose his job?” to which she replies, “Yeah I think he might.”

suspects series 5 episode 3

To add even more uncertainty and tension to the mix, unbeknown to both Jack and Charlie, there is another force at work thwarting their efforts to catch Martha’s killer. Their new boss, dodgy DCI Dan, has very ulterior motives in the case and may very well have motive for wanting Jack out of the picture.

Can Charlie have Jack’s back? Or has he strayed too far off track this time? And what will corrupt DCI Dan do with Jack’s future in his hands?

We are already holding our breath and will be watching to find out.

Suspects Series 5 returns for episode 3 Wednesday 17 August 10pm on Channel 5.

Anyone else worried for Jack? Since Martha's killing things have been extra full on for him, and now he's more wayward than ever, not only that, someone wants him out of the way...

The conversation between dodgy DCI Dan and Stan Turner at the end of the last episode is significant:

ST "This Jack Weston he's got it in for me"

DD "You shot his boss"

"Do you think murdering a senior police officer is going to be brushed under the carpet, you fucking idiot?"

ST "My brother might bend over for you but I won't. I need you to tell Jack to back the fuck off, or everyone is going to know about your little secret"

Couple that with the convo between TDC Gary Roscoe and Charlie in the 'Next Time' Preview

GR “Is the Sarge going to lose his job?”

CS “Yeah I think he might.”

Can't wait to see where this goes... Jack is central so he won't be gone from Suspects but what will happen to him? One thing is for sure, Jack will definitely not "back the fuck off" unless he's totally given no choice!!!

I'm personally more interested in fining out how Jack is coping with being a dad? Will he let Lucy call him dad? Will he act like a dad?
Though by letting Lucy live with him that does seem like a good sign he's taking on daddy duties. Or maybe she's there as more of a flat mate and it could be frustrating her that Jack won't just open up and be a dad.

I'm still thinking Jack needs to get a DNA test because it would not surprise me if Rose is setting him up, or has a hand in it. Something is just off about her... Jack just has her word that he's Lucy's dad. He's said that she's a master manipulator, what if she's manipulating him still, using his guilt over what she did for him as a catalyst. Time will tell i suppose but i'm genuinely excited for tonight's episode. (Have told the kids to disturb me at their peril this evening (their dad is at work on nights, so no disturbance from him ;) )

I'm normally not too bothered by spoilers, but considering how much they've been giving away before each episode this series, I've been avoiding any articles, so I'm afraid to read this thread! I'm feeling topsy turvey about what to expect.  I had some disappointment in last week's episode, police procedure that's really hard to believe - like letting the crack-head partner of a homicide victim just stroll away with their baby, or letting a minor who's mom just got arrested and who's been living with the suspected cop killer stroll away... Also been feeling that Jack is behaving a bit out of character.  I'm just finding it hard to believe that he isn't doggedly pursuing justice for Martha, despite the skeletons popping up.  His personal life and sometimes questionable policing methods have landed him in hot water before, yet he still pushed and pushed.  But I'm willing to concede that his more subdued behavior could be attributed to this being another senior officer he's dealing with, and the severity of the secrets that are being exposed.

The 'next time' intimations of a possible Jack firing, and these "rumors" that some forumers have mentioned about no more Jack give me some worry, but at this point, I really can't predict anything.  I'm not watching till tonight, my time, which is the wee hours your time so I'll have to keep off the forum all day! cry

I love how complicated this series is becoming. So many layers and secrets to be revealed. Who can we trust?!

It's incredible writing. And tonight's episode is written by Hilary Frankland, who wrote Series 2 episode 3.. the one with Edward Shaffer where Jack becomes emotionally involved, hides evidence and ends up with blood on his hands... so we can expect great things!

Anyone else in pieces after that episode?! Jack sobbing when he discovers he really is Lucy's father...He's already so protective over her and she is depending on him to make everything OK.

Loved Charlie in this episode too. Such a strong character.

This week got 5 stars from me.
It was sad to see on twitter so many people getting butthurt over the filming style. And as someone who only a few weeks ago was sour about the filming style... I'm glad my views has changed.

That episode was very gripping, and raw. The emotions from Lucy when telling Jack she was sorry for lying. That was some heart touching and true emotion. Cracking acting on the girls behalf. I felt her fear and sadness.

Charlie is such a strong character. I've never really looked at her before but tonight she really stood out to me for some reason! Unfortunately I still cant look at Lenora without thinking about Annie... So the scene of her telling off Jack and having a rip about his daughter was just like watching Annie flip out at Hal.

Wow I'm sure I could say much more but I don't know how to articulate everything I am feeling! Amazing episode.

An amazing episode, gripping.

Jack should know better than to cover for Lucy the way he did - he's way out of line. I don't care if he is her father, there are some things you don't do. Mind you, I'm amazed Lucy is actually his - I thought she may well turn out to be his brother's! Good on Charlie for asking for that test, which managed to be completed in record time. I also thought her reading out the 'prepared witness statement' struck a false note - it was so obviously not her, and Jack is not a fool - he would normally have told her what to say,  not wrote it down, or got her too. I'm finding a lot of things wrong with this series, while I am still waiting for the next episode with eager anticipation. It's less the programme I love and more a run-of-the-mill detective drama.

I also don't like the way Alisha spoke to him when she found out about Lucy - she definitely acted as though she was his boss, the way she talked about one word from her to his boss would have him directing traffic for the rest of his life. I know she has worked closely with the DCI for a few years, but still...... I look forward to her finding out that the DCI is the reason nothing has stuck on certain criminals they've been trying to get for years!

I'm still having problems with a 16-year old whose mother has been jailed and has nowhere to go is allowed to just wander without being referred to Social Services. I know the legal age is 16 but most look after minors till they are 18.

So, Lucy has been abducted from Jack's - who knew she was staying there?

Sometimes it seems a bit scripted to me.

That was an episode absolutely worthy of 5 stars!!  Last weeks ep had so many little niggles for me - things that just didn't quite click - and I was worried that maybe the switch from full on documentary style storytelling to drama filmed in documentary style wasn't going to work so well.  But this week I was so thoroughly engrossed that I didn't have a chance to notice anything else.  And the acting is just so gobsmakingly good!! I loved it when Alisha tore into him!  And not just because of the Annie/Hal feels....  She may not actually be his superior, but I totally get that she feels she is - not surprising considering the completely unprofessional way he behaved!

I'm still feeling rather suspicious of Lucy....and I'm reserving judgement on whether she is really Jack's daughter until we hear it confirmed by somebody other than dodgy Dan!  I'd like to revise my earlier assertion that I didn't think he was totally dodgy.... I was rather taken aback by his kindly hand on the shoulder attitude towards Jack when he found him on the roof.  Alisha, Charlie and Gary all think he's in danger of losing his job....and yet his DCI merely tells him to go home  for a couple of hours.  As Ellie said....who knew that Lucy was a Jack's place....??!  But, then again, I worry that I just find it a bit too easy to come up with conspiracy theories!! wink

Must admit that I'm also still struggling with the lack of social services care for Lucy....emphasised somewhat by Jack's question 'why aren't you at school'!!  And - although I didn't actually think about it while I was watching - I am left feeling a bit bemused by the total lack of any allusion to Martha's death at all during that ep (unless I missed it?)  I appreciate that DCI Dan has tried to quash any further investigation....but we're talking about the murder of a police officer - surely it wouldn't just be shelved so quickly?!  It's starting to feel as if this story could've started with the murder of any old person, and it was just a convenient way to write Martha out of the series.....

Lucy told someone (I think one of the boys who raped Kia) that her dad was a cop because she told Jack she was being threatened by those same boys that the same thing would happen to her. Perhaps she was followed to his home by someone connected to those boys?

I spent most of the episode wanting to slap Jack, his attitude really annoyed me. Loved that Charlie called him on his BS, sorted out that DNA test and Alisha was absolutely justified in ripping him a new one. She questioned him so he threw her some attitude so of course she should've thrown him some right back.

I still think there is a sting in the tail where Lucy and Jack are concerned. We shall see but an excellent episode, so fast paced and utterly gripping. 5 stars from me.

WOW!

100% votes for '5 stars - Excellent TV' for this episode!

Such a well constructed story, incredibly brought to life by every single performance.

The emotion, particularly from Jasmine, Lucy and Damien, was tangible, utterly amazing, raw, authentic talent.

Clare's reactions to Jack were so natural and realistic. Seamless acting and improv. So heartbreaking to see the position she was in.

Lenora and Perry have really made their characters now, both shone in this episode.

That scene with Alisha and Jack was standout, the fact that it happened in Martha's old office (*sniff*) gave me flashbacks but also possible flash forwards..

So many layers, so  many threads.. and I'm invested in every single one of them.

Only now had time to watch this ep.

Wow. I think honestly that was the best episode of Suspects I've ever seen. 5 stars. The moment in the end when Jack find out that Lucy really is his daughter, he buying the groceries and really changing in that second to her real father, only to find out she has been kidnapped. That really was good tv. Brilliant.

It was horrible to see the tension between Charlie and Jack. I understand Charlie and her choices but still it was hard to watch her letting Jack down. no

"Are you happy?" "Yeah" That moment made me laugh, good to have comedy moments in this show, especially when the topics in episodes are so heavy.
