Yet another piece of exciting new project news - Damien will appear in 'Safe Harbor.'
The TV series is described by Variety as an action thriller, as a crime drama by Wikipedia and as a Dutch-Belgian thriller series by Deadline. He joins a great cast, including other Irish actors Colm Meaney, Charlie Murphy, Jack Gleeson.
According to Wikipedia filming began in 2023 in Rotterdam, and Belgium and Ireland in 2024.
More info below from today's announcement, and previous casting announcements.
Submarine‘s action thriller series “Safe Harbor,” whose showrunner and executive producer is Emmy-nominated “Ozark” co-creator Mark Williams, has added several cast members, including Colm Meaney, whose credits include “Layer Cake,” “Con Air” and “Star Trek.”
Also joining the cast are Pauline McLynn (“Father Ted,” “Last Night in Soho”), Damien Molony (“The Split,” “Crashing”), Charlotte Timmers (“Billie vs. Benjamin,” “Zillion”) and Daniel Lapaine (“Catastrophe,” “Black Mirror”).
The cast, as previously announced, also includes Emmy- and Tony-nominated actor Alfie Allen (“Game of Thrones,” “Rogue Heroes”), Charlie Murphy (“Happy Valley,” “Peaky Blinders”), Jack Gleeson (“Game of Thrones,” “Sex Education”) and Martijn Lakemeier (“The East,” “Marie Antoinette”).
"Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones, SAS: Rogue Heroes), Charlie Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Happy Valley) and Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones, Sex Education) are to star in a Dutch-Belgian thriller series from Ozark co-creator Mark Williams, Night Train Media and Submarine.
They are starring alongside emerging Dutch star Martijn Lakemeier in the eight-part drama, which is for Dutch streamer Videoland and Belgium’s Streamz.
Production has begun in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, with Williams directing along with Arne Toonen, and we hear the ambition is for Safe Harbor to be a returner that aims to balance edge-of-the-seat thrills with character-based stories and a twisty plot line. Further shooting will take place in Belgium and Ireland, Deadline understands.
The series follows gifted hacker Tobias (Allen) and his ambitious best friend Marco (Lakemeier), who are intent on cracking into the tech billionaires club. They are plucked from quiet obscurity and plunged headfirst into the chaos of organised crime when they cross paths with the Irish mob. Leading the family’s operations in Holland are Sloane (Murphy) and her brother Farrell (Gleeson), who enlist their services to hack into the security system of Rotterdam harbour — Europe’s largest shipping port — to secure the undetected deliveries of drug shipments.
A big-name star is being sought for a patriarch role, father to Sloane and Farrell, in the Irish mob, we hear.
Williams, who created Netflix crime drama Ozark alongside Bill Dubuque, is writer and showrunner. He will produce through his Zero Gravity label alongside Germany’s Night Train and the Netherlands’ Submarine.
Herbert L. Kloiber’s Night Train is financing the show and controls worldwide distribution rights, which will be shopped by its sales subsidiary, Eccho Rights. Williams, Kloiber and Submarine’s Femke Wolting are executive producers alongside Night Train’s James Copp and Adam Barth. The series is financially supported by Creative Europe, ScreenFlanders and the Netherlands Film Fund and delivery is expected in Q3 of 2024.
The series is the latest example of a buzzy European co-production featuring international and U.S. talent. Streamz, owned by DPG Media and Telenet, is also involved in Northern Lights, the Irish drama from Stephen Jones we revealed last year that has Lionsgate Television attached. RTL Nederlands-owned Videoland, which has a slate including Mocro Maffia and Sleepers, is branching out in European co-productions under Head of Drama Mylène Verdurmen."
“At the core of this exciting, edge of your seat series is a family of friends who find themselves in dangerous, life-changing situations with some very bad players who force our heroes to challenge themselves and each other to grow as people,” said Williams. “It all adds up to an entertaining show especially when you throw in the high-octane action in exotic European port locations and tense thrills along with splashes of romance and humor.”
Production is under way in Rotterdam for Ozark co-creator Mark Williams’ new show, a US-Dutch-German thriller titled Safe Harbor and toplined by Charlie Murphy (Peaky Blinders), Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones) and Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones). Deadline first reported the news.
The eight-part series follows hacker Tobias (played by Allen) and his ambitious best friend Marco (Martijn Lakemeier). They both aim to crack the tech billionaires’ club. They are plucked from obscurity and plunged headfirst into organised crime when they cross paths with the Irish mob. Leading the family’s operations in the Netherlands are Sloane (Murphy) and her brother Farrell (Gleeson), who enlist their services to hack into the security system of Rotterdam harbour, Europe’s largest shipping port, to secure the undetected deliveries of drug shipments.
Filming will later continue in Ireland and Belgium. Williams is attached to direct alongside Arne Toonen (Amsterdam Vice [+], The Little Gangster [+], Black Out [+]).
Speaking about his project, Williams said: “At the core of this exciting, edge-of-your-seat series is a family of friends who find themselves in dangerous, life-changing situations with some very bad players who force our heroes to challenge themselves, and each other, to grow as people. It all adds up to an entertaining show, especially when you throw in the high-octane action in exotic European port locations and tense thrills along with splashes of romance and humour.”
Safe Harbor is being produced by Williams for his own banner, Zero Gravity (USA), alongside Night Train (Germany) and Submarine (Netherlands). The series will stream on Videoland in the Netherlands and Streamz in Belgium. Night Train is financing the show and is in charge of its world rights. Sales are being handled by Night Train’s subsidiary Eccho Rights.
The showrunner is also serving as the executive producer along with Submarine’s Femke Wolting, Night Train’s Herbert L Kloiber, James Copp and Adam Barth.
The series is expected to air at the end of the year, with a second one rumoured to be in the works.
On a personal note, this is a Mark Williams creation, and his show Ozark is up there with one of my faves of all time, so high expectations and anticipation for this!
"The show follows Allen and Lakemeier as a pair of hackers who want to join the upper echelons of the tech world with all the billionaires. They end up being recruited by the Irish Mafia, who want them to hack into the computer systems of Rotterdam harbour to move their drug shipments around undetected.
"It's a wonderful treat to watch these great European actors bring life to our band of colorful characters," Williams [creator] said.
Executive producer Femke Wolting added: "It's a pleasure to be bringing on board even more fantastic talent from around the world, marking Safe Harbor as a truly global project.
"This unique thriller will leave audiences on the edge of their seat, and with such a brilliant cast and talented creative team including writer/director Mark Williams and director Arne Toonen, it's going to be an unforgettable experience."
The show, which is an international co-production, began filming late last year and aims to air at the end of this year. A second season is currently being written, it has been reported."
So, add Irish Mob Goon to his CV? Lol. This show sounds promising. Action Thriller. Crime Drama. Just my cup of tea!

Also what a cast! (Look forward to finding out Damien's character name and episodes!)
Fantastic cast - I've just watched Jack Gleeson in a film with Liam Neeson, it was gripping. Alfie Allen was so good in Game of Thrones.
Hopefully it will appear on a channel or streaming service (by which I mean Netflix or Amazon, the only ones I subscribe to) in a little while.
I'm keeping everything crossed for UK streaming too Ellie, no news on that so far. I would be willing to temporarily subscribe to any service I'm not already with, just to watch it. Ozark was addictive!
Ellie, agree about the cast, that’s some great Irish talent ❤️ I always think of Charlie Murphy with Brummie accent in Peaky Blinders then remember her in Ripper Street with Damo !!!
