BIG NEWS!

Damien will play the lead role as Bergerac, in a newly re-imagined version of the classic series!

He is set to star in a 6 part series for UKTV, with a fantastic cast including Zoe Wanamaker and Philip Glemister. The reboot is written by Toby Whithouse (YAY!) and directed by Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders.)

This is a major role and series.

So exciting, happy for him!

Damien Molony said, "I'm incredibly excited to be stepping into the role of Jim Bergerac. John Nettles has left an incredible legacy with big shoes to fill, and I hope I can bring a fresh new take on this iconic character. I can't wait for audiences to join me on this journey."

The early synopsis reads:

"Viewers will meet Jim Bergerac (Molony) as a broken man, grappling with grief and alcoholism following his wife’s recent death. His mother-in-law, Charlie (Wanamaker), is concerned Jim isn’t putting his daughter Kim first and, when a woman from a wealthy Jersey family is murdered, Jim must fight through his personal struggles to become the formidable investigator he once was.

With a troublesome convict resurfacing from his past, Bergerac is required to call on his sharp investigative instincts and past successes to navigate the intricate family dynamics, and watchful eyes of the police force, in order to solve the case."

HOW AWESOME!  It’s funny, I randomly started watching Midsomer Murders recently.  Never heard of it nor John Nettles - the original Bergerac - until a couple weeks ago.  Crime Drama’s are my thing, so I am especially thrilled about this!!! And oh my gosh, Lord Toby is One of the writers!!!  biggrindancing

Love Bergerac, John Nettles was iconic (although I tend to associate him with Midsomer Murders).

A fantastic role, I'm absolutely thrilled. Love Damien in drama. About time he was given another meaty role!

(I must also admit to seeing the headline on Instagram and wondering if it was just someone's wishful thinking 😃).

Hi Whimsy and Ellie!! I KNOW!!!! THIS IS MEGA FABULOUS NEWS OF THE MAXIMUM FABULOUS! He's only going to be the new Bergerac! Damien has been announced as cast in 3 amazing TV series already this year, and then this news come along....!!! wow

I remember the original series, it was at the top end of detective dramas, with added scenery, and a compelling lead character. If I recall, Jim Bergerac was a troubled man grappling with issues, but a brilliant, instinctive detective. Can already imagine Damien in the role. Squee!

So excited to see that Damien is going to be Bergerac! This show was huge back in the 80s and I remember we all had huge crushes on John Nettles! Look him up in his Bergerac days!

It will be great to see Damien in this type of drama. I know he'll make it his own as he always does!

It's been a while since I've been here but I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the summer

Rosie! How very beautiful to see you here!

Things have been generally quiet, I even forgot my password it had been so long! No reflection on my level of DaMo fan-ness, just life, ya know?

Completely agree with you about the role. I am hoping the reimagining sees Jim Bergerac still with that whole conflicted maverick highly perceptive detective vibe. The original Bergerac was also so well written, and with Lord Toby at the helm, this is going to be the perfect combination.

I really wanted to see more of Damien in Suspects as Jack Weston ( I know we have rewatches and it is recently launched on CH 5 in the UK) and look forward to seeing him in that instinctive hunting-down-the case role.

Toby Whithouse was (briefly) interviewed on itv for a news item on Bergerac. Watch >>> HERE! <<<

The news item mentions it has taken 10 years to get the reboot up and running, so it has been in the works for a long time.

Excited to hear Lord Toby say,  “What we’d like to do as the series moves forward and hopefully we go into a second, third, fourth, fifth season, is to gradually build up and infrastructure on Jersey..”

I hope we see some glimpses of filming / photos soon!

Casting call alert!!!

Any Jersey-based fans out there?

Want to be an Extra in BERGERAC?

Here's your chance!

With filming for the reboot of the Jersey-based detective drama set to start within weeks, details have been confirmed about how extras will be recruited.

And if you’re 18 or over, available until the end of September and have access to transport then you’re in with a shout.

Many Islanders worked as extras in the 1980s on the original Bergerac, which starred John Nettles as Jim Bergerac. The long-awaited remake stars Damian Molony – in the title role – as well as Zoë Wanamaker, Philip Glenister and Timothy Renouf.

Brian Constantine, executive producer for Jersey-based production company Westward Studios, said a lot of people had shown an interest in getting involved, and that now was the time to get in touch.

“As long as they are 18 or over, available from now until the end of September and have their own transport, or access to transport, anyone is welcome to apply,” he said. “We aren’t sure how many people will apply, so at this stage we just want those interested to get in touch with some basic details.

“We’ll then come back to selected applicants and invite them to meet the casting producers when they are next in Jersey and discuss what’s involved.

“People need to understand the nature of this sort of work – it’s good fun, but can involve some quite long spells of hanging around, followed by short bursts of filming.”

Those who make the grade and are selected to appear will be paid at the same standard day-rate as applies to such work in the UK.

The six-episode series has been commissioned by BBC-owned broadcaster UKTV and directed by Peaky Blinders director Colm McCarthy. Westward Studios has a co-production role alongside BlackLight TV, part of Banijay UK, with filming taking place in both Jersey and England.

The show, which promises a “contemporary twist” on the iconic detective drama, will be available on free-to-air channel U&Drama and free streaming service U next year.

Mr Constantine said that while there was no set deadline for applications, the process was likely to move quickly.

“The sooner, the better, is what we’d say to anyone who’s interested,” he said.

Those wanting to put themselves forward should send an email to casting@westwardstudios.co.uk including the following details:

Full name.

Contact email and phone number.

A recent photograph.

A short biography or CV is “optional, but appreciated”.

Bergerac filming news!

Via Jersey Evening Post: Filming for Bergerac reboot to take place at Nude Dunes site

" A NEW use has been found for a vacant restaurant site in St Ouen’s Bay – as one of the backdrops for the new Bergerac series.

Residents near the former Nude Dunes restaurant at La Pulente received letters the week of 12 August to let them know that Blacklight Ltd, one of the production companies behind the reboot of the classic 1980s show, will be filming at the site next Saturday and on Wednesday 28 August.

The letter stated that filming would take place both inside and outside the former restaurant, on the beach and on the Five Mile Road – involving “action vehicles” and a drone shot.

Islanders gathered at La Pulente last month to demonstrate over plans, first revealed in the JEP, to turn the site into self-catering accommodation. The protest, which was organised by St Brelade Deputy Montfort Tadier, was called to protect the bay and the wider coastline from privatisation and over-development.

Less than six months after opening Nude Dunes, Nude Food ceased trading, meaning both of its restaurants – at La Pulente and St Aubin – were forced to close.

Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel previously confirmed that filming for outdoor sequences would take place in Jersey, while some indoor scenes would be shot in UK studio space.

Announced earlier this year, the new six-episode series – commissioned by BBC-owned broadcaster UKTV – will be directed by Peaky Blinders director Colm McCarthy and offers a contemporary twist on the popular detective drama created by Robert Banks Stewart.

Irish actor Damien Molony, who has starred in several BBC shows, will take on the reimagined role of Jim Bergerac in the show.

The JEP reported yesterday that hundreds of Islanders stepped forward as potential extras in the show, and a casting-call session took place at the Town Hall with 300 local people invited.

The letter to La Pulente residents informed them that the production company has applied for parking suspensions on the slipway and at the site’s car park to allow technical vehicles to “service the filming”.

“We do ask that where possible beachgoers limit pedestrian and vehicular use of La Pulente (slip road) for access during our shoot hours as we will be seeing out of the windows,” it stated, adding: “We will work with members of the public to ensure day-to-day activities are not disrupted.”

The second day of filming will feature the exterior of Nude Dunes, the beachfront and the slip road.

It added that residents and business owners “will always have access to their properties, they may just be politely asked to wait whilst the camera is rolling for two to three minutes”.

Islanders are requested to “enjoy the beach outside of our filming areas during our shooting hours”.

At the bottom of the letter, it read: “We are fully aware that we as a production are guests here in Jersey and so much of what we do is only possible with the cooperation and understanding of residents. We hope that we can demonstrate that filming can be carried out in a professional and courteous manner with as little disruption to usual operations as possible during our time here.” "

Don't know if you saw last weekend they were filming indoor scenes in Dover. There were posts about them using the Exmouth police station. Blogger Mikey shared that he was nearby but sadly couldn't do any set stalking.

Agree with you HalGal, this is such a great fit for Damien. Mind you, it is hard to imagine a role he couldn't excel in!

The series is currently filming, and most sources suggest a 2025 release, but that is all we know at this point. Keep checking in for the latest!

Wow, the original Jim Bergerac, John Nettles, has been approached for a cameo in the new series but has turned it down. It would have been so cool to see him, though it might break the suspension of disbelief unless they tied it in as a family connection—like having the new Jim Bergerac as his relative, and the new Charlie Hungerford as a descendant of the original. That would definitely shift it from a re-imagining to more of a sequel!

I love how generous John Nettles is with his praise for Damien, too! In this article from the Jersey Post, he said, “I have a suspicion that the young man playing Bergerac is a much better actor than I am, but don’t tell anybody that.”  Such humility and support from an absolute legend!

The "new Bergerac" was actually on BBC News at One today! Quick view of the cast, very short interview with John Nettles and a few of the extras from the island.
