I think teetering. Hal is so still and intense and determined to remain in control and that's what attracted me to the character in the first place. I do like it when he's shy and awkward but his intensity is what i like.
Yay! thanks for voting ruby, teeteriing hal is so compelling, it's like holding your breath...teetering is possibly my default Hal fave, but I could not choose that over the other modes, so i went for the wimps option...got to love 'em all ooh, we should add shy and awkward Hal as an optiion!
I chose "all of the above", because that is what I love about Hal-- that he's like a prism; you shine a situation through him and there's a rainbow of actions or feelings. One moment he responds to Eve with thinly veiled contempt; in another moment he intends to read poetry to her. If Hal wanted to put on the affect of "being human", then he's doing it without even realizing it. After all, humans are capricious, whimsical, moody, we fight, we cry, we love, and none of it has to make sense. We just respond to external stimuli with fists and feelings.
We've seen Hal menace the coroner, and in a heartbeat (pardon the pun), feel immense guilt about it. We've seen him have a mental conversation with himself regarding whether or not he could be around blood, and then give in to temptation because he couldn't help it. We've seen him downright smirk at Tom's adorable though naive attitude about sexuality and relationships, and still punctuate that conversation with agreement, because that is something a mentor, older brother, or guardian would do... steer a friend down the right path.
Basically, I think Hal is all of us, and we're all Hal. We're all good, we're all bad, and we're all everything in between.
Very much enjoyed reading your thoughts, Sattyrn, especially: ".. he's like a prism; you shine a situation through him and there's a rainbow of actions or feelings"
Yes, as much as Hal wants to try to maintain the secluded and totally separated and protected existence he had for a whole 55 years with Pearl and Leo (kia-ora incidents excluded) when he moves into Honolulu Heights, he is exposed to endless situations... and people..and it is waiting to see how he handles those (or not as the case may be) that is so exciting.
I voted for the marigolds, the baby holding, the good guy, and just before you think I am all about the good guy, I also voted for bad, bad Hal. The blood with maggots was too much for me. I do like him when he triumphs over his evil side!! :D

Hang hang on..what's going on here then?!?! Eileen and Irishgal you voted for more than one option?! I thought these polls only let you pick one! drat!! if only I had known!!
lol Irishgal, being one of the good guy leaves Hal positively giddy! I think my fave moments for Hal being the good guy is in Ep 3 (The Graveyard Shift) when he pretends to have gone back to the vampires then stakes Fergus, then the big fight scene. It was the moment when he was accepted into the household and possibly into the series?
you is not alone Sami, it seems to be the winning response so far!!!! kind of a no brainer i guess....we all love all of Hal! but I wonder what peeps would have chosen if there was no "all of the above" option? hmmmmmmmm?!?!?
I voted for temporarily happy in his marigolds and cruelly tormenting Cutler. If I had to pick one, I'd go for marigolds because then I'd have the back story of cruel tormentor. I'd know how he came to be wearing those marigolds and being only temporarily happy.

Would have been very easy to pick all of the above as the many shades of Hal are why we love him but in the end I plumped for bad bad cruelly cackling Cutler tormenting Hal. I love the confident, arrogant, sarcastic nature of this Hal. A man perfectly at ease & assured of his position in the world.

Nice thinking UJ I have always loved the marigolds, not least because of the wink to anti-Marigolds Mitchell and the contrast between the 2 vampires.
Deliciously evil I agree Becca. And although he is frightening, he is magnetic, but also tragic - never does Hal appear more in his own skin than when he is Bad Hal - in alignment with his vampire nature, when he resists and overcomes the pull of this version of himself, his life is, on the whole a minute by minute anxiety ridden torment, with rare moments of happiness. but when the sun does come out for the latter version of Hal those are perhaps some of the sweetest tasting moments.
We are very very lucky with Hal that we have this whole spectrum to enjoy and it must be an amazing character for Damien to play.
Teenage me wants to try to tame the evil/unstable Hal, and the "mature" adult side of me wants the marigold-wearing, baby-holding Hal (who else's ovaries went KABOOM when he picked baby Eve up?!) because come on, ladies there's nothing sexier than a man who likes to clean and take care of the kids for you am I right? he he he
Very true, Miss Lilli. If he could cook, beyond a burger, he'd be a total keeper. Shame about the homicidal blood drinking compulsion. But hey, nobody's perfect.

Lol! the transition from icky babies helpless Hal , through the throwing up on his immaculate top Hal, to the feeding and acting like a social worker guarding her safety from the potential volatile Annie (in his eyes at that moment) Hal, is really quite remarkable and wonderful to watch! But I am more of a sucker for a conflicted / tortured soul and hero with issues /heavy baggage..Hal rather fits the bill!
No the poll is still open Zia! if you have already voted though you are not able to vote again! Let me know if you are having trouble and I can add your vote for you
