I think he was waiting to hear whether he'd got the part by the time of 'If You Don't Let Us Dream...'. If memory serves, Ripper Street was renewed half way through the s1 run (i could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time) so maybe late January-ish time . Filming started for S2 at the very end of April and i think Laura said he was waiting to hear about a role he'd auditioned for but couldn't/wouldn't say what it was for. I think in hindsight it was for Ripper Street.
Oh yes, I remember that Lisa! I don't think he would have mentioned it anyway, even if he could, even if he knew he had it, due to the strength of feeling around Being Human ending.
I agree Domino. I think he is sensitive to the mood and wouldn't have said even if he could. And he's not exactly the show and tell kind of guy most of the time as it is...
