Cetainly is Ciara, 2.15-3pm and although it isn't all Damien, he is playing the lead male character, so lots of Damien time I would imagine.

I'm hoping to listen live, if I can sneak off for long enough; otherwise it'll be a trip to iPlayer afterwards.

I may even spend the whole 45 minutes listening and gazing at the lovely pic you posted on Friday, lol!

The words that come to mind are gentle and touching - not only Damien's voice as Paulie, but the story, and the performances, were very moving. Any dry eyes in the house?

Having read the story, I must admit that my expectations were pretty high.  And that certainly didn't disappoint.  It was just perfect.  Just a bit speechless.

Oh Paulie.....!

Very moving. His voice, which always is delightful, was particularly gentle and soft with a much stronger Irish tone to it. So nice to hear as I don't often listen to plays on the radio.

Wow, he really does have a voice for radio doesn't he?

I missed the first couple of minutes due to RL things but quickly settled down to listen. Usually i plug in my earphones and listen but it was just me in the house on my own so no headphones and just enjoyed the story. Awww poor Paulie, my heart bled for the man. Very poignant performance from our boy and such beautiful accents across the board. Really enjoyed it. I hope there's more from him in the future :)

Poor paulie, how sad was the speech at the end from Pauline's mum!

Damien sounded wonderful though, which I never doubted obviously....thud

It was a good story and I found it really easy to listen to which sometimes in this radio plays I find them difficult to understand and get into. It was good and damien was fab :) xx

Such a lovely voice! He did a great job of resigned determination and always being gentle with his mother. Rather sad story, but nicely done.

Agree with you all.

Damien and Fionnula Flanagan were magical together as mother and son

Even though I had my headphones on, I had a number of loud colleagues talking over me, and at me, so I couldn't concentrate very well and it all kinda washed over me, so I will need to listen again to it in a quiet room. (and it probably didn't help that I checked Twitter during it and ended up down in the gutter with a couple of other people who shall remain nameless...lol)

However, I could listen to Damien's voice all day though - I wonder if we could persuade him to read the phone book or something, as a forum special, just so I could have it on loop...?

I've just listened to it. I am still drowning in his voice. Sad story. what crazy women, turning down Paulie. I have convinced myself that the follow up to this story is that Mum convinces Paulie to do internet dating and he finds someone.

got anyone in mind, Laura?

Such a beautiful voice Damien gave Paulie, despite the quite strong accent, so gentle.

Agree, crazy women, when it comes to love, nothing else matters... it is a decision of the heart not the head. (but then I am a crazy romantic with a history of relationship tragedy worthy of many a radio drama so..)

Paulie's situation was all the more heartbreaking because he was so humble and selfless, he saw himself as 'just a...' when in fact he was a quiet hero who stepped up where noone else did. Could not help but feel he was taken advantage of by all his family, though his mother's guilt grew as time progressed.

How many re-listens now? I am up to 4

I thought the dramatisation was perfect.  I was interested to hear how William Trevor's story which evokes a sense of stillness and quiet - not much conversation - could be translated to radio.  I think the answer is, by casting Damien Molony and Fionnula Flanagan.  I'd previously wondered if there would be narrator, and I thought using the voice of Paulie's Ma for some narration worked brilliantly..... and she really evoked a sense of solitude and the loneliness of the hills.

The description of Paulie from the book - "He was serious the way he told things, his expression intent....".  Damien was just perfect - he does that quiet voice thing so well! - although the bit where he's laughing with his sister, Frances, makes me smile a lot too.

When he gets off the bus and you hear his footsteps I just picture that scene in Making Rosebud where he's got off the train and begins the long walk home.........following his father's death!

I listened to it on the BBC iPlayer (Thank God it's available in Belgium). I'm not sure I understood everything. Is that how an Irish accent sounds like? Damien's voice was lovely but the story made me sad. It's a bit revolting that his family asked Paulie such a big sacrifice...
It made me want to read the book... :D

Yay for the radio iplayer Melody!

Irish accents vary according to the region, this sounded harder to me than Damien's own Irish accent. It is a very moving story for sure. Upon further re-listens am less judgmental of the family, it is not entirely a black and white situation. But although Paulie did decide himself, he as under a lot of pressure. For me there is that sense of manipulation and obligation but also Paulie wanting in a way to continue the family traditions..and also a sense that it was in his blood?

4 days left to listen on the iplayer...
