I could imagine that Hal's aristocratic manner is something he has learned over the years.

I could imagine that his human life was extremely tough, infant mortality rates of the time were huge, if a child survived the first year, he was doing well and if he survived five then even better. Hal didn't even know who his mother was. I can't begin to imagine the effect that can have on a psyche. We dont' know the complete circumstances so we speculate. He could've been completely rejected by those all around him, shown little in the way of affection or love, he must have been witness to a lot that could have given him a warped impression of love, or just a lack of empathy. I can imagine that in the eyes of society he would've been seen as the lowest of the low. He has no idea of his mother, same with his father, he is illegitimate with absolutely no prospects. I can't imagine anyone willing to give him an apprenticeship for a trade for example. I can imagine if he wants to survive, he'll have to do it himself. So when he's offered this new existence, eternal life, this power over those who have previously tolerated/looked down upon him, can you imagine how he must have felt? (similar to Crumb i'd imagine) He would've wasted no time in bettering himself, which is why i think the 'Lord Hal' moniker possibly is reflected in that. As he climbed the ladder of vampire hierarchy, i can imagine no one would've dared look down on him again.

Good points, HalexFan. I realised later that Alex had twigged Hal's behaviour.

And more good points too, BuffyGroupie. I figured that Hal ended up not being especially nice when a human, at least cold and hard due to his life. Although I favour that, I like Ruby's idea too, that Hal was more downtrodden, and actually more like Crumb, which plays nicely into yet another reason for Hal to reject his progeny. Damn, we need more episodes.

well....I've succumbed.  Having seen the trailer I have now watched/read everything about ep6 that I can lay my hands on!  I really want to curl up in a ball and sob.....but then I felt like that before, so it hasn't really made any difference.  It's notched up the speculation a bit - obsessed doesn't really cover it (last night I said '.......I'll give Hal a ring in the morning.  HER!...I mean her!') Although my speculation is rife, I won't parade it here, because I know that tagging something 'spoiler' is a bit like slitting your wrists infront of a vampire!

Hi everyone!

ok..so it seems now that everyone has begun speculating and having theories on ep 6, and looking at the pics and stuff...I was not going to post the finale synopsis or any pics until the very end of the week, but seeing as the chats have already begun, will begin to do so.

Can i ask that members stick to speculation on the finale in  the new topic, and leave this one free for episode 5 discussion so those who wish to avoid all spoilers can still come into this topic.

thanks!

What a fantastic episode number 5 was, I have only been able to watch it once, but I think a rewatch tonight is in order ready for Sunday! I agree it was intense, and all at once I felt saddened by seeing how it all comes about, how the end is reached, but also anticipation for what was to come next! It really pulled at the heart strings. Damien blew me away, as he always does, he is absolutely brilliant, but this time just that little bit more, i think because of all the meaning behind this episode, and the closeness now to the end.

Hi magnetize, thank you for sharing your thoughts! I agree with you that this was an insanely powerful episode, as penultimate BH eps always are - maybe even more so as this is THE penultimate episode

I'm really seeing the 'vampires are addicts' bit in the latest Being human episodes..

not that it isn't always there with the BH vampires, and with HAL, the hunger, the routines to keep him safe... but in last week's episode when Hal first of all approached Rook for some more blood from the bloodbank, then the tragic moment when he negotiated a way to stay "safe" with Natasha, so desperately sad as Hal was just barely clinging on to his safety..and this was the first time we saw him drink from a human.... the way he showed her where to stake him and to promise not to hesitate if she couldn't push him off..the way he touched her vein with his fingers, such a bizarrely and paradoxically tender gentlemanly humane yet monstrous scene - both exhilerating and utterly crushing as Hal finally gave in to that ravenous rabid hunger..and then how he resisted the blood that was gushing from Natasha when she slit her own throat, his goodness, his innocence, his heroism and humanity rising to the surface as he tried to save her........and that futility he had been experiencing on and off building up to that moment coming to a head with devastating finality when Alex did not believe him.. "then what's the point. we're done.".....

astonishly good writing.

Hello American fans!

you had the penultimate episode ever of Being Human last night on BBC America, written by the very talented Sarah Dollard (aka @Snazdoll on twitter) - how was it for you? for me it was the most mindblowing episode of Being Human, ever...........

See our thoughts above when it aired in the uk and please come and tell us what you thought! How did you feel about Hal in this episode?

I loved it when it aired in the UK, but BBC America cut out the scene with Alex & Hal (the kiss) and the Natasha & Tom scenes. So it made no sense why Tom cared so much about Natasha and why Alex was so upset. I was furious watching it. :(

WHAT?????????  They cut the kiss out????  I've been recording the episodes but haven't actually watched after E1 because they cut out scenes then.

They switched the time to 11pm and cut the running time from 1hr 15min to 1 hr - and they of course kept all the adverts.  But of all the scenes to cut out - THAT KISS makes absolutely no sense!!!

I'm extremely disappointed in BBCA and can see why there aren't as many CRAZY fans for the show here - they don't get the full experience.  None of the Alex's Unfinished Business either...

Yea... The Natasha/Tom stuff was annoying cuz to people who only watch on BBCA they wouldn't get how close Tom was to her, but the kiss scene???? UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. My friend and I were FLIPPING OUT. I'm still so fired up about it when I think about it.

I am gobsmacked and saddened to hear that BBC America cut the Tom and Natasha scenes and THE HALEX KISS. Deeply upsetting for lots of reasons, it is the last run of Being Human, please let it go out in tact and as intended. These are crucial storylines and character arcs and that is senseless censorship probably to meet advertising quotas and timescales. If ever there was a painful way to be reminded of the financial machinery looming over the magic of Being Human (and all creative art) this is it.

I'm glad I don't have cable so I don't have to see how they butcher shows to fit their financial priorities. I Netflix or buy dvds. But it sucks that someone watching BBC America and watching BH for the first time is being cheated of the nuances of the story. They don't know something has been cut out.

It seems if they're bringing over shows that don't fit into US timeslots, then they need to adjust for it. They're doing a disservice to their viewers who come for the content and are probably aware that British shows sometimes have different running times. The worst part is that they probably will never change it. Such a shame!

It's simply mind boggling. The episodes can't make any sense whatsoever. What exactly is the purpose of BBC America? Who owns it, runs it? HBO and other cable shows are of varying lengths so folks are used to something not being exactly one hour or 40 mins long. What is the flipping point?
