I have been preparing myself for all kinds of worst case scenarios for Flight including him hanging himself in his despair or being murdered by one of Shine's men in revenge. Probably by that sneaky Sergeant Barton; he is always lurking around in the background.

I too hope for redemption for Flight but I'm not sure he will get it either. So to help dull the pain of that I have taken to thinking of Flight's "the work I did for you, here, it was good work" speech as his redemption.

"No, the work I did for you, here, it was good work. And that work was meant, Mr Reid, and felt in my heart as proper work".

Awwww, poor Flight.  I just thought time served for his deceptions or just thrown out of police force.  And some redemption for helping to bring down Shine.  I never considered hanging.  Now I'm depressed.

crikey Cora and Rosie, let's not imagine the worst! *gouges brain out with a spoon*

As you all will have seen elsewhere on the forum, Suspects filming completes at the end of this week. Ripper Street filming completes mid August so practically there is time for a Flight scene or two to be shot. I am hoping we will at least find out at last whether Damien will be returning.

I am only imaging the worst case scenarios to prepare myself if tears are going to be needed! I love Flight and need to emotionally and psychologically prepare myself for the worst ;)

I am of course hoping for a happy ending for Flight and a beautifully moving redemption scene where Reid forgives him everything :) That would be wonderful (and will also make me cry but those would be happy tears!).

Excitedly waiting for Dublin-based Damien tweets very soon!!!

Anyone else follow MyAnna Buring (Long Susan) on Twitter? She tweeted today that they have finished the first block of filming of 3 episodes. So can we assume that Flight is not in 3 episodes?

thanks for the update Rosie!

Unless they film episodes out of order or scenes from same eps at different times, you may well be right....

Yes, I guess we don't know the sequence of filming.

Still keeping my fingers crossed for some tweets from Damien in Dublin soon!

Someone asked her how many episodes were in a block and she said this time there were three but usually there are two.

Still no confirmation either way, sorry folks!

However... it occurred to me that a solution for H-Division may be to keep Flight close, but not part of the division, by making him an informer! living back on the streets, with invisible support and protection from Reid and co... he has proven his skills in deception.. he could betheir permanently undercover spy! sorry if someone suggested this idea for FLight already!

That's actually very good idea domino!

There could be at least one ep where they could meet Flight after he served some time in jail.

Reid could find him in some pub, after losing his job he has become man he feared an touched the alcohol. Reid could feel pity and give him another chance and offer him job as a spy. Or Flight could come offer his help if he has information of offer himself as a spy. The possibilities are unlimited!aww

Lets hope, Damien got lot of attention when he was Albert Flight in this show, I'm sure everyone knows it and it and to be honest it could be quite mad to let him out of new series, unless Damien refused for the job.

I can't believe that they haven't thought about Flight. I bet after they started to write new episodes they did go trough all characters and made up story for them. They have to give so many closures cause last ep left everything open. They had to think all the relationship, what happened after fight, who survived who died after all these years, did Reid start new family, what about Rosie... I'm sure they think about something to say about Flight too.

Flight has already shown his undercover skills, not just with the storyline in S2 Ep4, but in the whole time he was a DC at H Division... although Jackson intuitively knew something was up, it a largely a surprise when his true purpose was revealed. It would also be a great way to both unofficially 'punish' him without having to publicly disclose anything at all about the whole situation... and it would enable the Flight storyline to remain tragic and with plenty of conflictions...and maybe even more secrets! especially if Shine can still get to him as well....but I have seen no mention of Joseph Mawle returning for series 3 either.

Agree Jozie, Ripper Street was a good thing for Damien... and from my point of view as a fanbase we certainly were very vocal and supportive during series 2.. and that was noticed and appreciated, I think. The writers will have addressed his story for sure, whether he appears or not. Remember what happened with Emily Reid?

Something has been playing on my mind lately about Flight in S2, when he is introduced in episode 2 and he and Drake go tot he doss house, he is very naive and seemingly unstreetwise. How could this be with his background? surely he was familiar with places like this? Or was it because he was familiar with places like that that he didn't realise he could just talk to people the same way as a copper?

They would definitely have created a story arc for each character; I can't believe the writers even intended to leave Flight's story just hanging at the end of the s2 finale, particularly as they wouldn't have known it was going to be cancelled.

Domino, so much of what we see of Flight's behaviour doesn't seem to fit with what we think we know of Flight's past. He seems naive and as you say not at all streetwise, which is difficult to reconcile with his criminal past. He does seem to have been sheltered/protected or it is a very convincing act to get them to trust him. Letting himself get beaten up is quite some commitment to his act if so! I am hoping his true past is something that will be explored in s3 as I think there is still much more to discover about Flight.

Absolutely Rosie, and I agree... but there are ways he can be written about rather than written in to series 3... I guess I am preparing myself and us all for that possibility.

Flight's unstreetwise qualities also show themselves when he goes to arrest Werner in episode 7... he is alone then, but I have also wondered if it is an act. a very good act. He is definitely good at playing a role. (Flight and Damien!)
When Jackson was instructing him in episode 4 I got the feeling the feeling he didnt need as much of it as they thought!

Yes, yes, yes to all of this!

When we learned a little about Flight's background, I found his reaction to the doss house surprising too.  He says something like 'how can men live like this'...and seems genuinely shocked - you'd think that he would've had experience of such places.  And, as you say, this is not the only example of an apparent contradiction.  There is certainly a very odd mixture of innocence and deceit going on with Flight....

If we knew for certain that Joseph Mawle would be back, then I'd be pretty convinced that Flight would be too...I feel absolutely that Flight has to have a hand in Shine's downfall!  I'm still finding it hard to believe that they could end s2 the way they did - with Shine bloodied, but certainly not beaten.....still as Reid's nemisis - and not resolve that on screen (although I have to acknowledge that what the writers want is subject to the actors wanting to/being able to oblige).

I'm still liking my senario of Flight working for Susan, both with the common interest of wanting to bring down Shine (albeit tangentially in Susan's case) which ties in nicely with Flight working as an informant for Reid (Reid's very own Baker's Street boy!!).  I think that Shine's misdemeanors would need to be officially recognised...but proof of his crimes could only be obtained throught unofficial means.  It all works perfectly!

I've always thought of the scene with Jackson in ep 4 as a pointer to the viewers to pay attention to what Flight is saying/telling people. Flight has confessed that he is a liar and Jackson tells him that his lies (his cover story to Evelyn) should contain his hidden truths. Is Flight giving away clues about his past or is it all part of his deceit? Are we meant to feel sympathy for Flight if what he has told Evelyn about his past is true or is this episode setting the viewer up to doubt everything we think we know about him as the series develops?

Just remembered I read an interview with Joseph Mawle not long after Ripper Street was cancelled where he suggested that he wanted to move on to something new. But that was months ago and anything could have happened since then.

 That's an interesting question. lol!!

I agree that the scene when Flight tells Evelyn about his past has been set up for us to think that the story contains some truth....and it's easy to imagine that as a result of being orphaned he has lived a pretty destitute life...it certainly does create sympathy.

Although we can't be at all sure that any of this has any truth in it.....Jackson's 'hidden truths' comment is a whopper of a red herring if it's completely fabricated!

Flight talks to Evelyn about a lack of moral guidance...but he seems to have been well educated - which has always suggested to me that he has been cared for by somebody.  And we're also given clues to his past by Shine and his arrest record....Shine does describe him as a 'paddy wretch' (or something similar!).....but that doesn't mean he was destitute - he could've been living in reasonable comfort on his illegal earnings.  He, like Evelyn, doesn't need to have had experience of places like the doss house, just because he was orphaned.

It's very easy to fill in the gaps of Flight's past with what we know about Evelyn's own history.....and to believe that she saw the truth in what he was saying.  But Evelyn's reaction 'you're scaring me' always makes me feel a bit uncomfortable - as if what he tells her really is too close to her own truth to be real.  It is possible that he is just a total out and out liar and accomplised con-man and this is just another story, another identity which he has created...and that his remorse at the end of the series is only an act to save his skin.

He wouldn't go to the confessional just to lie....so his remorse appears to be genuine.  And, as he makes his confession to the priest at the beginning of ep4 I believe that the lies he is confessing to are the ones he's telling Reid etc.  And it really does seem to me that when he is talking to Evelyn it is a moment of him letting his guard down and allowing himself to be himself...to leave the lies behind for a while.

But we can't know for sure.....unless we get to find out some more in the next series!!!!

I've always thought Evelyn's "you scare me" meant that she saw something dark in him. His expression just before she kisses him seems a little like he is afraid that she has caught him out. I completely agree that his talk with Evelyn about his lack of family/guidance is him letting his guard down and being more himself than we see before or after that. I always find what he says to her really moving and it would break my heart if he lying about that. It would be really cruel to manipulate Evelyn in this way by playing on her family situation and I don't think Flight is cruel. I think we are supposed to think what Flight had said about his past is true so that it helps to explain/mitigate what he does later.

He seems to have quite a history of lies and deceit, his first arrests on his record are for fraud/deception type crimes, before he had even met Shine. I've always wondered what the last arrest on his record is. You can see Wo.... and it is a few days after his arrest for illicit distillation. I can only assume it is for wounding? Does it refer to the people who went blind from the gin? Wounding suggests to me that he attacked someone with a knife - this seems a little out of character compared to his other crimes. Did he attack Shine and he then saw something in Flight.

Shine would have chosen the best man for the job when he wanted a spy in Leman St so Flight must have been experienced at deception. Shine would not have expected Flight to have such a crisis of conscience. I agree fifi that Flight's remorse is genuine. He is clearly distressed by what has happened, particularly Hinchcliffe and Merrick's death. Flight appears to have got away from Shine in his position in Bloomsbury so how does Shine persuade Flight to be his cuckoo in another man's nest?

Flight's past would make a great spin off! Perhaps the forumers should write it!

As for Flight's education, if he had been in an orphanage he probably would have been taught to read and write there. I think that primary education might have been compulsory by the time Flight was old enough to go to school. Perhaps he had a natural aptitude for learning and this was recognised by someone who took him under their wing. Flight would need to be clever to be so deceitful and have succeeded in fooling everyone.

you mean his parental history is another deception?! noooooo! that speech before during and after the milk guzzling in the Flight and Evelyn scene in episode 4 is one of my faves of the series... I totally believed him.... but that makes for interesting thought...

Danny kendrick, who appeared with Damien in 'If You Don't Let Us Dream, We Won't Let You Sleep' at the Royal Court Theatre, is going to be in Ripper Street 3!
