Not forgetting how Flights character evolves, glipses of his personality, and possible causes and affects of what kind of man he seems (not giving anything away to those who may not have seen before (doubt not many on here)). But easy to make snap decisions without pondering why...
To anyone who watched Ripper Street 2.02 on Drama Channel last night, please feel free to vote in the episode poll!
Rosie and Kallie, I came into this topic to say almost exactly the same thing! Although I've watched this series of Ripper Street many times (can't think why) watching from the beginning, knowing Flight's full story (at least, what is revealed to us.. there is so much more we dont know) does make you look at everything in a new light... and that seems to grow with each repeat viewing! It's great that even though we know the story, it takes nothing away from re watching, in fact it seems to add endlessly fascinating layers.
Last night I found myself even more curious about Flight, his attitude on arrival... his arrogance and simmering... and also his keenness and seeming innocence in some things. I found myself really wondering about Flight in that scene at the shelter, where he and Bennett go looking for John Goode. For someone with Flight's background his naivety about the situtation and the threat to their safety is intriguing. Was it because he didn't see himself as too different from those men, that he was no an outsider? When he shouted "Police" I didn't think so. We know Flight must have been fairly streetwise from his past?
I know for sure when I first watched the episode, I saw Flight as an enigma and his arrogance as frustration due to his ambition and keenness. I was also totally convince that his moral compass pointed towards goodness. The scene where he helped Merrick up in the street, where he could have suffocated on his back, compounded that. So the scene at the end where he 'fell asleep' outside his door I definitely did not think he had anything to do with. I thought is was a tragic mirror scene to the one where he saved Merrick because he was alert and vigilant and good hearted - that he has worked himself too hard and fallen asleep - causing him to miss the fact that Merrick was dying in the room behind him. Now knowing the actual events of that changes the whole feeling and experience of the episode.
I've watched this series so many times and it doesn't diminish my enjoyment at all. I actually think it enriches the experience. I think I fell in love with Flight all over again! The bit where he tries to use his hair to cover his black eye so that Reid doesn't see it is adorable! Every time I watch I notice something different and think differently about Flight each time. I thought that you could see how much Flight wants Reid's approval from the start which I hadn't noticed as much before.
I adore what I call Flight's ta dah moments. When he reveals the crucial bit of information and then expects praise. You can see his frustration when he doesn't get the recognition he thinks he deserves.
I could talk about Flight for hours. I find him fascinating and there's so much I want to know about him that we never get answers to!
Is there a thread I've missed on discussing what we think is Flights back story? Wonder if we can reach some kind of agreement by clues given and likely in history and path that he could've travelled... ???
I think there have been a number of discussions but I'm not sure if it was in a specific thread. I'm sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction of there is one, Kallie. If you like fan fiction I've written a few stories about Flight which include some of my thoughts about his past. They are in the fan fiction section of the forum if you were interested ;)
Thanks Rosie, haven't read much fan fiction on here to be honest but going to Edinburgh Fringe for 23 days so thought that would be the perfect time to catch up there... I'm hoping I actually get further than chapter two of Raven there too...
Watching again this year (forth in a row), I do have ideas for a show that I hope to do one year though... Will put my ponders together and maybe start a "Flight thread" somewhere... I'm really warming to him now...
Thanks for the news on the S3 DVD Rosie and I had almost given up on FLight's return until you said that!
Kallie, for me a layered character is far more engaging than a flat one who is 'all good'... do we have to love a character's actions to love a character? Hal was a cold blooded killer / mass murderer..
I do find it hard to be impartial about Flight, I think I could just about forgive him anything, Kallie!
Totally agree about Flight, domino! It's his layers and complexities that make him such an interesting and frankly delicious character! There's plenty of scope in the storyline for a return for Flight. His story was never closed off so there are limitless possibilities where his story could go.
With both Flight and Hal it's the good in them that I cling to and their struggles to let the good side 'win'
Flight is not an outright villain like Shine... it's ambiguous (which I like) but there is an element of him as victim of circumstance in the past and present. As he implied in RS 2.04 he had very little moral guidance.. as an adult he demonstrates mostly that his moral compass points towards the greater good. The 2 opposing scenes with Merrick seem to sum up the shades of his actions...the one where he rescues him and the one where he turns a blind eye. (no pun intended. or maybe).
Everything about Flight just makes me want to cuddle him and make everything better!
I've never actually thought of Flight as a villain. I know he did some terrible things but I don't think that was really who he was or wanted to be. If he had the love and guidance he needed when he was young I don't think things would have turned out the same way. But then he wouldn't have been our Flight full of his layers and complexities.
You know its interesting, I was watching Ripper Street on the way to and from my trip and I first of all, always think that damo in the second to last ep is not in it very much and then towards the end, bam! he is in almost every scene, and also, how I noticed something different about the eps each time. I only have two eps on my ipad but and it seems i always watch them on the plane ride to somewhere. It's great when you notice differences each time you watch something. Ok end of tangent.
