December 15th is a Sunday according to my calendar so i know what i'll be doing that day, i must remember when i book panto tickets, to not book it for that day.

And doesn't Damien look great in that pic, looks well rested as well as smiley. Yay *claps excitedly once again, sits on hands*

Oooh! wonder if he'll be singing a tune or two?! ....exciting news & i have to say that of all the sweaters that i have seen Damien pictured in , this one in the cast pic has to be my fave to date! it's very CANADIAN!!!!

DAMIEN MOLONY JOINS CAST FOR RADIO VERSION OF ‘THE COMMITMENTS’

Damien is currently in Dublin recording for a very exciting new project – a radio version ofThe Commitments!

Originally written by Roddy Doyle and most famously known for it’s incarnation as the iconic 1991 Irish cult film, The Commitments is a story of unemployed young Dubliners who form a soul band. Currently making it’s world debut in the West End as a musical, the radio version has been adapted by Eugene O’Brien, is directed by Jim Sheridan and produced by Gemma McMullan. The cast includes Colm Meaney, Gavin Friday and Sarah Greene.

The BBC Northern Ireland Radio Drama production will air on BBC Radio 4, December 15th.

Watch this space for more details as we get them.

@domino...the fabric looks very acrylic & the pattern design a little cowichan! & with the jeans he looks like a Canadian guy ! it's a Canadian look!!! (Not that we're renowned for fashion)!  smile

There will deffo be singing in it, cannot wait to find out more about Damien's role!

Has everyone watched the video in the link in my previous post? I think this is Damien in the white T-shirt (if aynone else can get a clearer screengrab that would be cool)

According to Damien's Spotlight page, he will be playing James Clifford in The Commitments, the pianist in the original Roddy Doyle novel, Steven Clifford in the film!

Damn that man IS a vampire, he's so camera shy!  It always feels like these little behind the scenes things (like from It's a Pity) we only get tiny blurry bits of him....

 

I agree, I think that's Damien in the white shirt.  That wasn't JUST the band on stage rehearsing, some of those people (there were lots) had to have been the voice actors.  So, why wasn't Damo up there I wonder?

 

I confess I've never seen The Commitments and am not familiar with the story.  Anyone wanna give us a good synopsis of Damo's character/story arc?

Damien's character isn't (unfortunately) a very prominent one. James Clifford is training to be a doctor, hence the Soul Surgeon nickname, and plays organ in the local church. The band need a piano player so recruit him. He's a quiet personality, unlike the rest of the rowdy working class band so I'm not sure how much we will hear from Damien in this role - I guess it depends on the play writers interpretation of the story.

I'm going to see the stage show on Sunday ( I may have mentioned how much I love this story before) so will let you know how the role pans out on the stage as opposed to the book & film next week.

The film was required viewing as a teenager, and I vaguely remember the piano player but I can't remember him compared with other characters. More bummed about potential lack of singing than the size of the part. (That sounded better in my head, lol)

I checked Netflix and Amazon to see if they have the movie streaming but no joy.  I will have a look for the book or the movie at the library.

In the interview it sounded like this might be a slightly new spin on the story.  But as I don't know anything about it maybe I'm interpreting the comments incorrectly.

I just keep thinking how adaptable Damien's voice is & what a thrill it would be to hear him sing a soul song! (other than the BH stuff) anyways i'm in town till Dec 20th so i will get to hear the Radio play & hope to see Albert Flight take off in RS before then.(Please BBC no postponements) even though theres no fixed RS date yet!!!!!!! biggrin

I think kudos to Damien for landing any role in such an on trend and cool radio project! it's such an awesome awesome thing to be part of!

With the musical premiering in the west end right now, there is already a groundswell of excitement for The Commitments, and the cast/director for this project are pretty awesome!

As I mentioned in the feature on the fansite, the radio version is adapted for the radio from the book, so not sure how much relevance it will have to the film, it is going to be a new incarnation of The Commitments, with its own unique take on the original story. But the film is iconic and well worth watching if you have not already!

I passed on our thanks to Gemma (producer aka lovely radio lady) who said she is "delighted to see the Molonians are excited", they all had great fun filming and she is very pleased with the recording material. There will also be photos nearer the time
