Dear Forumers,

I have had to keep a little secret from you all these past weeks, but now I am delighted to be able share with you something very special! I have had the honour of doing the full transcript of the 'Cool Gothic and the New Vampire' panel event Damien attended last month, for the BFI!

Without the full footage being publicly available, (although the BFI have kindly shared excerpts which have been posted below) I hope that for those of you who were lucky enough to be at the event, this gives you something to permanently remember it by, and for those of you who were not, I hope this verbatim version of the whole event gives you a real feel of it. There are some quality moments from Damien and Toby!

 

The transcript includes every single bit of the panel, with only 2 tiny edits made by the BFI, but not from the Damien or Toby bits!

I cannot publish the transcript directly here on the forum, but please enjoy reading on the fansite!

We have an exciting exclusive to share!

Over the past weeks, your humble webmistress had the privilege of transcribing the full‘Cool Gothic and the New Vampire’ panel event for the BFI and I am delighted to be able to publish it here first on damienmolony.org for your enjoyment.

The event was held at the BFI Southbank 4 November, hosted by writer and broadcaster Danny Leigh and attended by Damien and Being Human creator Toby Whithouse, with other creatives of the modern gothic on TV: Farren Blackburn (director The Fades), Lily Loveless (actress The Fades), Anthony Head (actor Buffy) and Dominic Mitchell (writer In The Flesh).

Damien and Toby shared fascinating insights into Being Human and Hal, the over 500 year old vampire who Damien portrayed in series 4 and series 5 of the show, as well as their experiences of horror and Being Human’s place in the gothic ‘tradition’.

The video excerpts below have already kindly been made available by the BFI.

The panel also featured a series of vintage to present day clips from gothic TV and film, as well as the panel discussion and an audience Q & A. The transcript is verbatim and has not been paraphrased, in order to give those who were unable to attend a more representational, authentic experience of the event.

It was brilliant to be able to read it all - it was such a fantastic evening and this makes it all come flooding back!  It's really a bit sad how bad my memory is without a prompt.......this is just what I needed.   Thank you, thank you....

Wow!!!! That must have takeN you ages!!!! Amazing and brilliant work domino! Truly incredible! Job well done! 

 

I have to say, my fave part so far (up to page 15) is when he gets all flusterd when asked about the sexy vampire phase.

Huge thanks to Rhidian and the BFI for the opportunity!

Very happy to be able to share it with you all at last! And something we all can enjoy - whether we attended the event or not.

Yes it did take a really long time, you'd be surprised how time intensive it is to do an exact verbatim transcript, who knew there were so many ums, ers, yeahs, I means and you knows in all of our speech! Trying to do Damien's awkward moment was a bit of a challenge! and Toby is such a wordsmith, elaborating upon his points and going off tangentially which also required careful transcribing. And Anthony head is so funny!
Not forgetting the awesome Danny Leigh, I liked where he was going with the vampire / human / monster question...my question that I sent to Rhidian on Twitter was along those lines and wasn't asked, so that particularly caught my attention.

Peraonlly, I found it as fascinating to hear what Toby had to say about Being Human, as I did hearing Damien talk about Hal. It is striking that although Being Human is based on a vampire werewolf and ghost, and therefore, could be placed in the fanstasy 'genre' and although the main trio are supernaturals and their very existence creates a world that is far removed from 'reality'Toby has successfully created a very realistic drama, that is in fact incedibly human. I know we all know this and it is what makes BH stand out from others of this ilk, but hearing Toby's talk about it is fascinating.

Also when he talked about and how life doesnt exist within 'tramlines' and the mix of comedy.

I'm not sure Domino can do that HalGal as she was asked specifically to do this by the BFI rather than her linking from elsewhere.

It is easy to read, I promise, and there's plenty of interesting conversation there not just from Damien, but Toby and the others.

Hi HalGal, so glad you have discovered this little treasure!
Kat is correct, the transcript belongs to the BFI, so it has to be published and shared in a certain way.

I would also feel it would be doing a disservice to the other panelists and the host to fragment it into parts. Honestly the whole thing is well worth the read!
