good point fifi, though I think it is a reflection of how innovative it is, and Suspects USP, so has to have a mention. But then they could expand a little on the episode itself!
I am still a bit too blown away byt episode 2 still to even consider doing a review myself.. but I give it 5 stars! *****

Not sure if this from Another Tongue counts as a review, but great to see Damien and Fay mentioned

both are voiceover artists on the site!

"The semi-improvised dialogue gives Suspects a certain authenticity that is lacking in other programmes and I personally found myself caught up in the action."

Exactly the thing why Suspects is very different from other programmes. I think this plus the way they are shooting this (sneakily and like you are one of the cops/document style) makes it something you can jump in and live in that world for while.

This is exactly the kind of review I wanted to see.  A nice balance between what makes it different, and what made it good as a viewing experience.....and I agree with every word -except the bit about the four episode series.....don't think I'd tire of it if it had a full 8 eps....

"....we need to at least care about the drama’s central characters and not just see them solving the crime" - is exactly what we said during s1!  I guess it's been a pretty steep learning curve for everyone involved, but  it is definately growing from series to series.

"....a sense of urgency as Weston and Steele made their way through the labyrinthine structure of the college in order to track down their suspect"  - although the series tends to centre a lot around the what happens in the interview room (which is, in itself, quite different to other crime series) I think this is exactly the kind of scene which Suspects excells at - it feels very real...a bit chaotic (although I'm sure it's carefully planned) ....and makes such scenes in other series appear....choreographed.

Excellent! Well found, domino!

I enjoyed it fifi, glad you did too!

Piece from The Metro yesterday.

Personally I think Weston and Steele has a better ring to it!

yes, Yes, YES!  Everything you've said.  I swear fifi, we're like twins separated at birth. Fraternal twins, obviously...

Some of my favorite scenes have been those really adrenalized running scenes, very raw and potent.  From S1, the last episode when they raid the grooming ring, was such a powerful scene, even though it's dark, choatic, you hear intermittent yelling and the campera is just jumping around.  I thought it was pure genious, because I felt like I was running in there with them, felt this sense of relief and justice that they captured these horrible men and saved the girls.  The scene in S2 with the boy rescued at the end had me sobbing.  Such urgency, so emotional, so heartbreaking to see the boy's face when Charlie finally finds him.  You just feel so much more connected with the first person perspective.  The handheld, rocky camera work WORKS so effectively.  This labrynthine scene from S3 took it a step further by putting the camera in for the officer.  Emmett Scanlan knocking it own and then staring down at it was a stroke of pure genius.  I gasped and then clapped like a loon, all because they did that little bit of unexpected, that interaction.  Breaking the 4th wall, as it were...

They've done that before and each time it's just a little bit of richness added to the narrative.  We know this is a drama, and it's questionable if it's supposed to be that a camera crew is riding along. Most of the time the camera acts as recorder but not "in-your-face" documentary style. Then you get those little hints, Jack turning to camera to say "bingo", Martha closing the door when they find the pornography laptop... and it's like "oh yeah that's right, having the camera following them is part of the narrative".  They've come up with some other great angles, such as the rear view mirror & the dashboard camera.

I remember when Suspects first came out, a frequent complaint was the dodgy camera work.  The peaking around the corners, looking through reflecting windows, constant switching between angles in the interrogation room, the wash of overhead lighting partially obscuring the actors.  But I've really warmed up to it.  I feel they've refinded it a bit, there's less washed-out look, more vibrancy, yet still retain that "you're right there" realism.  Something I first thought would be a detriment has turned out to be an unexpected asset.

domino, I agree Weston and Steele has a "classic detective duo" ring to it!  And as much as I'm disappointed no Damo in that pic, how awesome is it that amongst the white men there is Miss Clare-Hope, in action!  Damien and her definitely make a smart, bad-ass team!

Oh, Another Tongue finally mention Damo!  Only took them like a whole year... I was on the lookout to see if they would tweet about Raven, and was disappointed they didn't. hmm

You think it's time to share those marvelous audio clips? wink

whimsy, I agree.. and am so pleased Claire is the main focus, she is BRILLIANT as Charlie!

perhaps Weston and Steele is a little too much like Sapphire and Steele?! Better still... Weston, Bellamy and Steele? They are all perfect compliments to each other as characters, the team is da team!

Weston and Steele / Sapphire and Steele

I think it's an exellent idea!

But one of the things which I love about Suspects which hasn't been mentioned at all is the fact that 2 of the 3 lead characters - including the boss - are women.  Turn it into a duo and it would be back to the male boss with the woman as his junior.....and much as I'd like to see that series it would kinda be a shame to lose the current dynamic.....

Thanks Jozie, but just gathered the great words of the fans who after all are the audience, they determine the ratings, and doesn't that mean their voices count more than press? The press have a lot of power to influence but they don't really reflect what the audience think! Also, they don't dedicate their every day to celebrating the show - so don't have the insight into the current opinion!

Over the 2 (very busy for me) weeks when Suspects Series 3 aired, Twitter was totally buzzing and it has been a joy sitting there on the Suspects TV Show twitter page watching all the overwhelmingly positive comments on Suspects coming in. People don't just like this show, they absolutely love it. People are not just calling it good drama, but the BEST drama. As the last tweet I posted in the above article says, "unrivalled".

There were a very few negative comments, but it felt to me that they didn't know Suspects is entirley unscripted and fully improvised. Also some people prefer their drama slick, spoon fed, comfortable and familiar, with a camera that acts like an eye looking at a painting, rather than gritty, immersively overwhelming, experientially heart pumping, uber realistic, challenging, brave and innovative.

I've found the complete contradiction of the reactions to Suspects quite amusing!  And have been amazed by the comments critisizing the acting!!  I'm really hesitant to use the fact that the dialogue is improvised as an excuse for bad acting....it needs to be able to stand up alongside other dramas regardless of any innovations used in making it.  BUT personally I think the acting is outstanding!  The fact that it's improvised does give it a different edge though....for me it lends the whole thing an extra dimention of realism - and I do wonder if the reason that some people think it's not good is because it doesn't meet their expectations.....it doesn't LOOK like acting in the way that they understand it and so it must be bad...?

"Also some people prefer their drama slick, spoon fed, comfortable and familiar, with a camera that acts like an eye looking at a painting, rather than gritty, immersively overwhelming, experientially heart pumping, uber realistic, challenging, brave and innovative."

Agree with this entirely...the key word being "familiar" - like with what I was just saying about the acting style.

(I apologise for the excessive use of bad grammer in all of that - I hope you can make some sense out of it all....)

People seem to be commenting on the acting when they really mean the dialogue, which is different... my view is that we're so desensitized to real dialogue by scripted tv, that we shudder at a pause or hesitation, or the like, (not that there were any in Suspects that I noticed) but it is the realism in spontaneous dialogue they seem to be criticizing... when most are actually praising it. Agree that Suspects needs to stand up to other dramas and that it does. But, also feel it is unique and in a class of its own and has nothing to be compared to...

Suspects Series 4 has not started yet, but we already have a review!

Via The List

TV review: Suspects Series 4, Channel 5 (4 stars)

Gripping improvised police drama starring Fay Ripley, Damien Molony and Clare-Hope Ashitey

TV review: Suspects Series 4, Channel 5

Channel 5's police drama Suspects feels like a documentary. It looks like a fly on the wall doc but the real key to its success is that there are no scripts. The actors are given a breakdown of the plot and various key pieces of information, then they are thrown together and improvise their way through each scene. It lends the finished product an air of authenticity. There's a naturalistic ebb and flow to conversations, the level of realism drawing you deeper into every story.

Suspects doesn't waste time on the investigator's personal life, resisting the urge to muddy the waters with meaningless baggage. The case always takes precedence. Each episode is also self-contained, so you can easily jump in at any point even if you've never seen it before.

The opening episode of series four concerns a missing soldier with PTSD. The team's investigations open up a messy web of damaged relationships and past sins. Suspects dispels the idea of any glamour associated with criminals or the police. The vast majority of crimes are committed by sad, desperate people. Police work is usually hard graft, sifting through evidence, desperately trying to spot inconsistencies.

DI Martha Bellamy (Fay Ripley) leads the team, tired and exasperated but driven to solve every crime. She seems to genuinely care about everyone involved from the victim to her squad. She's backed up by DS Jack Weston (Damien Molony), who favours more confrontational tactics, and DC Charlie Steele (Clare-Hope Ashitey) who has a keen eye for details and prefers the softly-softly approach. The interplay between the characters feels so believable, no one ever overplays their hand grandstanding for attention. The chemistry between the actors is utterly convincing, it's almost as if you are eavesdropping on a genuine case.

Suspects feels refreshingly different to every other cop show on TV. Low key and downbeat, the only criticism is that Suspects can be a bit depressing but that's only because it feels so real. The best original programme Channel 5 has ever produced.

Suspects series 4 premieres on Channel 5, Wed 25 Nov, 10pm.

Great review for the Suspects Series 4 premiere from The Independent!

Suspects, TV review: Utterly compelling and completely self-contained

Channel 5's detective drama is unscripted, with the cast devising their own dialogue based on a detailed plot description

Damien Molony, Fay Ripley and Clare-Hope Ashitey star in 'Suspects'Damien Molony, Fay Ripley and Clare-Hope Ashitey star in 'Suspects' Channel 5

When it comes to detective dramas it can be incredibly hard to stand out from the crowd. But Channel 5's Suspects has found a novel way of doing just that. Shot in the style of a fly on-the-wall documentary, it is unscripted, with the cast devising their own dialogue based on a detailed plot description.

Opening the fourth series last night we found Fay Ripley and co investigating the disappearance of an Afghanistan veteran with PTSD. Without the gloss of the usual cop show, it was incredibly realistic and all the more harrowing for it. The grief of the soldier's father, completely stripped back, was more genuine for being less extreme.

Without the distractions of detectives' personal lives that have become so common in most police shows, this was utterly compelling and completely self-contained, meaning that the casual viewer didn't have to contend with complex back stories and unravelling subplots. Other detective dramas should take note.
