Wow, I thought you would all find this a tough one!
On the one hand, we have Albert Flight - a multi dimensional, angsty, conflicted character, bearer of secrets, man of mystery, ambitious, cocky, but also vulnerable, young naive.
On the other we have Jack Weston, excellent at his job, impulsive, confident, intuitive, passionate, sarcastic, also ambitious, enigmatic..
Lol at the lego hair Fifi! Jack most definitely wins in the hair department. I guess Flight had his moments but Jack's overall confidence (bordering on arrogance) and sarcasm win out for me. Their respective detective skills differ due to the period in which they police & both do their jobs well given the circumstances they face.
I guess, for me at least, it boils down to who would you rather have a pint with and the answer is Jack.

Hope, it's not too much spoiling, but the reason for my choice is, that Albert is good in his job, but I think due to his history and changing process to become a good man instead, he lacks some qualities of a good detective like maybe a lot of self-confidence (if he had his shot would not have missed the target) and being a bit too naive for his position (and also his history, I think). He might become a really good detective after some more years in the H-division but at the moment I say Jack is the better detective.
Lego hair!!?!?!! Wrong, so very wrong. A man needs pride in his hair, not be all scarecrow like Jack!
To be fair, it's Flight's downfall that caused me to vote for Jack as much as anything else. That, and that we never really got to see Flight really do some detecting as such. Only in ep4 do we see him really work out what's going on and, even then, Reid kinda took the credit. Jack is getting a lot more on his own merit.
Becca you would rather go for a pint with Jack .....Not a bad achievement for a character with no backstory, no personal life and who you don't go home with! ..... BUT Albert doesn't drink so is it a fair fight?
(as an aside we didnt have much of those context things with Albert either. But what a backstory he ended up having... quite the amazing story to Albert!)
So...Noone here would rather prop up the bar and drink lemonade with this (fifi and Becca) gorgeously ruffled hair fella?
Tina thanks for voting and commenting the the things you list as reason for not voting for Albert are the reasons I love him, he is many layered and with different shades.
I am abstaining from the poll so far, but going to leave little things here to provoke reactions! and they may be Flight biased as he is losing ...and by the way has MUCH less screen time ..so needs a little more help!
"I guess, for me at least, it boils down to who would you rather have a pint with and the answer is Jack." - Amost said exactly the same thing myself, Becca.
Sorry, domino - it's a pint with Jack...not lemonade with Flight. I did say my reasons were shallow..... And Damien himself said that Flight was too serious!
Do you need a backstory to decide which detective you'd prefer to have a pint with? The type of person the character is can be seen through how he works and interacts with others. Still Jack for me.

@domino: I just considered the 'detective'-qualities, and here Jack wins for me, which doesn't mean I don't love Albert. A very good colt will very probably become a brilliant stallion
Maybe/Hopefully we can do this poll again after series 3 of Ripper Street, might be a different outcome (Sorry, domino, but I think, cute Mr. Flight will loose this contest).

I'm gonna have to say Flight. He has this dark past and he's trying to make it up with good deeds, he's doing very good job even though his dark past is following him.
Not that I don't like Jack, Jack is so good at his job he seems almost like "superhero", Flight makes mistakes and that's why I sort of like him more as detective. People make mistakes.
It was hard decision cause Jack is more funnier, he has better look but Flight already have this "damo detective" space in my heart and somehow even Jack cannot fill it, no matter what. So Flight it is.
OOOh Jozie!! totally glad Flight got atleast one vote! actually, it looks like he has two now!
I'll have go play devils advocate in the other direction now just to make things fair....
Jozie, I know what you mean about Flight... and he is a bit of a damaged character too, that pulls us in... but in terms of making mistakes, doesn't Jack show he is less than perfect on several occasions, he got a proper telling off from the boss in the last episode! and we don't know what had driven Jack to be as driven as he is... I wouldn't be surprised if he also has a dark past!
Well yeah, last ep showed little "bad side" of Jack, he make mistakes also but in the end his boss told him that his is good detective and one day he will run the place. That kind of sorted it out. Maybe this is something we need to discuss at "Jack chat" tonight. I would like Jack more if he wouldn't be so polished and perfect (which must be hard when you are Damien) Some dark secret, revelation about him would do the trick. I must love troubled man
Flight is trying to do good work to make up his past, Jack is trying to do good job so he could be in charge one day, moving on with his career. I just like that conception making up the past. It was something I could relate to. And perhaps I liked that quality so much in Hal that I like it also in Flight
Good idea Jozie, looking forward to Jack Chat tonight
Interesting that you experience Jack as polished and perfect... I feel him to be a bit of a kinetic force..barely contained intensity, a little bit messy ( emotionally ) as if he is about to go off! But he is a good detective... and obviously has a gift for what he does. Flight had his moments of 'good work' too though, didn't he?
Whilst Jack might have a dark past, it'll be trauma in his life rather than a criminal past. You certainly can't be in the police with a record nowadays.
Of course! Flight had many succeed moments too :) I don't know, Jack seems to be too good what he does, little rough about the edges but perfect detective. Flight is like Hal in flesh. Mistakes and succeed moments mixed. But Jack is funny and exciting to watch. You just wait those moments when he loose his temper in investigation room :D
