I did! I was the first vote to jack but I didn't have time at the time to explain my answer

My all time fave Hal line (just love the way he says it)

"We've been played! My God! We've been played!"

"Annie's getting hysterical downstairs and I'm not enjoying it"

"kill me. Kill me now. You can tell Annie that I attacked you or something"

"“Were you guys talking about me? I heard ‘clearly gorgeous’”

"Yes because otherwise you are quite the catch"

I am not surprised by the Jack votes, ultimately he is a COMPLETE mystery as nothing is known about his background, or his 'life' beyond the moments we see of him being a detective! whereas with Hal and Flight, we are given parts of their backstory, their behaviours, motivations, fears, dreams.............

I voted Flight, after long thinking, I think he is the most mystery man of these three :) Looks like I'm not the only one!

This was difficult.

I think of Hal as a Man of History. He's been around for pretty much all of it from Henry VIII onwards. We know bits and pieces, from his prequel to little bits offered here and there. It's still not his entire history though.

Flight...throughout the second series we didn't really get any kind of a hint til towards the end and again, bits and pieces. We knew his parents died when he was a child, he had been in trouble with the law as a youth and thus attracted Shine's attention and was in his thrall and that he wanted to become a better man.

If you want to talk about being mysterious in knowing absolutely NOTHING about a character then Jack Weston would be the one and that is because we literally know nothing because it's the show's premise (for now) that it's all about the police work and not necessarily the coppers themselves. Damien has hinted at who he thinks Weston is but that's just his supposition and the mention of a sister may or may not be true, it could've been a ruse to get the witness/suspect to open up.

And the beauty of all three of these characters is, fan fic writers such as myself can take them in any direction they wish (and have done so with two of them)

After all of that, my vote went to Flight. He was deliberately a man of mystery and all the more intriguing for it (which i suppose you could argue for all three of them, hence the difficulty)

Thanks for adding your vote and thoughts Lisa!

Flight was described as a 'man of secrets' before we met him so our fascination with discovery was kindled pre- Flight and his secrets were not fully revealed for the entire series, the suspense and intrigue was powerful.. some people bemoaned the fact, saying that his character arc had fizzled out because it was so drawn out... i felt the contrary.

Reponses to this poll very much depend on your definition of mysterious.... Jack is the most mysterious in the sense that he is the least 'known' ... but it he the most emigmatic, intriguing, perplexing....?

mysterious
mɪˈstɪərɪəs/
adjective
adjective: mysterious
  1. difficult or impossible to understand, explain, or identify.
"his colleague had vanished in mysterious circumstances"

Exactly, domino - as far as I'm concerned lack of knowledge of a person's past or present circumstances does not necessarily make a mysterious character - it has as much to do, as whimsy said, with their motivations....what makes them tick - and, for me, although Jack's personal circumstances may be unknown, he is not a mysterious character.....

So it's still between Hal and Flight....and I'm definately starting to lean towards Hal (always....!!)

Flight was a man of secrets...but I feel that by the end of ep8 he's been pretty much laid bare....

Having been orphaned while young, he ends up as a young man, surviving in London by distilling dodgy gin (he tells Shine "I was a bad man when you found me")  Shine describes him as "a paddy wretch destined for jail or an early grave", so he was hardly thriving - people are poisened, and Flight is arrested.  Shine offers him a get out of jail free card and a new life in exchange for his loyalty..and somehow installs him in Bloomsbury as a constable. With his new persona in place he hopes to be able to absolve himself of his past with hard work and 'good deeds' (as he tells the priest) and to 'outrun his shame'...to become the good man he so obviously wants to be.  But eventually he realises that his apparant benefactor, Shine, has 'made evil of him' and, having failed to rid himself of Shine's malevolence, the only way out is to come clean to Reid......

Whereas I can only echo Alex's sentiments about Hal - everytime I think I know who he is it turns out I'm wrong.....

Jozie - I think Hal is much more complicated than just good and bad....there are a lot of blurred lines.  But it is quite possible that he is simply insane  It only took 250 years for Lady Mary to go totally off her rocker and Cutler did say that all the blood that the old ones drank affected their minds...and Hal does, after all, repeat the same action over and over in the hope that he will achieve a different result.  Maybe his human life had already destroyed his sanity - and that's why he chose to become a vampire...... Who knows?!  It's all a total mystery to me.....

Good points fifi! I was thinking voting Hal too, because of his mysterious past and his mysterious nature. It's almost insane-like, and nobody really knows whats going on inside his head, except deep inside he wants to be good, and he show it many times. He regrets bad things he has done and tries really hard to be good. But sometimes bad side over powers him. I'm thinking some drug addict when I'm thinking Hal and sometimes the "rehab" fails. He got all time in the world to do his good-bad circle again and again (as he said, round and round we go). But is he really mysterious when this is so obvious?

I voted Flight, even though some of his pass was revealed in the last ep on RP season 2, there wasn't quite everything. Yet it feels that Flight is truly man of mystery cause he is really outsider in many ways. Cause we don't know him, he has no real friends, no one close to him, he keeps distance to everyone (why?). And he doesn't want to get known. In the end he wanted to be good man and tried to clear up his mistakes he made and confessed his crimes to Reed. But he didn't really tell who he is and what does he really want from future...

So...I finally voted - for Hal!!

I'd like to think that it's not a compulsion, but a carefully considered decision....but I do wonder if there will ever be a poll where I can't find any jusification for voting for Hal....

Jozie - you're right....Flight doesn't seem to have any real friends, and he does keep his distance from everyone - but having stepped into a new life, any old friends he might have had would have to be left behind...and living a lie means that he wouldn't be able to risk getting close to anyone new.

I think that, ultimately, I had to vote for Hal because, as well as there being literally hundreds of years in which we have no idea what Hal was doing, or, more importantly, who he was, I cannot fathom the relationship between the vampire and the man - he is so full of contradictions.  Yes..his thirst for blood is like an addiction.....but it is true that he didn't even blink when Natasha was bleeding all over the floor, and yet he embraced his dark side - not even when Alex told him he couldn't go back to HH - but when she said she didn't know what he was capable of;  he apparently struggles to control his dark side when Crumb ties him to the chair in the cellar, but then makes a controlled decision to embrace it;  he says that drinking blood means he has become the man he fears - and yet, having drunk the blood that Cutler gives him...he then gives Eve a bottle!  And he attempts to reject Natasha's offer - having already fed from her - because Tom is his friend....

I could go on...and on....but I won't!

I wrote loads before voting, and its all wiped.... Basically Hal has my vote due to age, and the extremes that make bad Hal go cold turkey, to what makes him unable to resist blood every 50+ years, and don't know enough about Flight to give judgement on him... But will soon...
