That was beautiful Rosie! Sad, but beautiful. Well done!
I loved this because I have always wondered what kind of home Albert had, what kind of conditions he lived in that he came so troubled man but he was good in his heart. This story fits perfectly in his story, this could be quite possible past that Albert had.
The feeling I get from Flight is that he is looking for a 'father' to guide him which is why he is drawn to men like Shine and Reid so it made sense to me that his father abused him (and from what he says to Evelyn about his father - "drink took him not long after"). Although in his scenes with Evelyn it's difficult to know what the truth is because he is pretending to be someone else but I think he didn't have to dig too deep to create a believable back story for Bertrand. The thing he says about how he imagines what it is like for other people to have a family to guide them and how hard it is for him to know what is right, breaks my heart - I don't blame Evelyn for kissing him, I definitely would have done too! His reaction to her makes me feel that he is so alone and longs for someone to love him.
Thanks Domino! Yes, hopefully a bigger story is building - I have snippets of story developing about the orphanage I imagine he grew up in but trying not to stray too far into Oliver Twist territory! I have a box of random pages of typed paragraphs and scribbled handwritten notes for all sorts of elements of Flight's story, both of his past, present and future (well, my imagined versions of this). My aim is to write a novel-length fic like some of those about Hal I've read on the forum.
Definitely trying to ramp up the empathy for Flight to try and crack my friend and fellow Ripper Street fan, Vicky, who can never forgive Flight for what happened to Joseph Merrick - I'm determined to make her cry! She loves to goad me about Flight and I love to offer rebuttal.
Rosie, this is so touching and heartbreaking! Very well written. I look forward to reading more snippets of poor Albert's life. xxx

Thanks Whimsy! My other stories about Flight posted on this forum are a little more positive because they deal with his life post series 2 but I wanted to explore what his early life would have been like from the little clues we are given.
After taking a bit of a break to concentrate on my exams for my Masters (I passed both exams!) I'm getting back into my writing again which is making me happy!
