domino - I agree that it excites an amount of sympathy....and curiousity. But I think it's also a kind of denial that it has any relevence to the current case....maybe one reason he doesn't want to talk about it is because he knows that it will sound as though he's not being objective about Saul,.

onwards!  And I think you might be right fifi.  Why else wouldn't he just tell her?  Martha knows.  There is a difference in whining and giving the facts.  I think he wants to be seen as if it isn't affecting him and if she knows the truth she might know otherwise.

Scenes 56 - 59 (20 mins)

Scene 56 ( 38.06 - 39.32  )

Jack and Charlie interview Nate (solicitor present). Jack shows him a photo of him running from the scene of the crime. Nate repeats he didn't do it, but closes up when asked if he was there and what did he see. Jack is very sympathetic, and tells him he knows he was not involved and was not capable of it, but that he knows he knows something and he needs to know what that is.

Scene 57 ( 39.33 - 40.53 )

Jack and Charlie talk in the corridor, Charlie questions how Jack can be so sure it wasn't Nate. They head back to their desks in the main office, and the discussion turns into an argument, with Jack throwing his notebook across the room and pulling rank on Charlie.

JW: That was pretty conclusive

CS: How can you be so sure that it wasn't Nate that attacked Jonathan?

JW: Check out the CCTV image of Nate fleeing the scene, and there's not a speck of blood on him. Ok Charlie, the attacker comes in, finds Jonathan and Nate fucking, Nate freaks out, he's shitting himself in there, he's only nineteen for fuck's sake, he sees the weapon come out, he flees the scene..

CS: Ok then, Sarge, my question to you then is, if Nate didn't do it, who did?

JW: Who's the guy covered in blood at the crime scene!

CS: I don't know, I don't think we can discount what Saul told us about there being someone else in the house..

JW: Jesus.. for fuck's sake Charlie, Jesus Christ

CS: uh, excuse me?

JW: We've wasted enough time listening to what Saul has got to say, he's got zero credibility, there's not a jury in the fucking country that's going to believe a word he says if you put him in a witness box

CS: Sorry, what has that man done to fuck you off so much that your..

JW: Ok. ok, wind your fucking neck back in, wind your fucking neck back in, okay, I don't buy into the rank system too much, but I'm not your fucking friend, I am your line manager ok, I have got three stripes you have got zero.."

Martha, who has been looking on from her office, walks in at this point

JW: Yes Boss

MB: Er, a man has been assaulted on the common. Fatal attack.

CS: I'll get my keys.

MB: No don't get your keys Charlie, get some shut eye. You [to Jack] get YOUR keys.

Scene 58 ( 40.54 - 41.51 )

Jack and Martha drive to the new crime scene. Martha asks if she needs to take Jack off the case, Jack is irritated that she asked.

JW: Jesus Christ...

MB: I need a better answer because it's starting to effect you, it's starting to affect your work, our team

JW: It's just a little bit closer to the bone than normal and I'm trying to act in a professional way, I'm trying to let it not affect me

MB: But it is

JW: Yes, it is, okay, but you have to trust me to be a professional. This guy reminds me of my past, listen, I can do my job..

MB: You can take time out

JW: No, I don't want to take time out, I want to crack the case

Scene 59 ( 41.52  -  42.45 )

Jack and Martha arrive at the common, the area has been cordoned off and the body inside a tented area. Forensics and uniform are already at the scene.

The murder weapon, a hammer, has been found in the bushes and the SOCOs say it is a similar injury to the one inflicted on Jonathan Moxton, and it looks like the same attacker for both cases. Martha comments that she thought they had their guy with Nate, but he is in custody. Jack points out Saul Hammond is on the loose.

Why do you think Jack thinks that Nate is not capable of it.  Do you think it's because he "knows" it was Saul or does Nate give him a vibe?  Because Nate is clearly not being on the up and up and I would totally suspect him.

Was anyone else literally gawping at the scene where jack lost it with Charlie? chucking his notebook across the room, and pulling rank, only to switch Mr nice guy back on as soon as Martha walked in?

I agree with fifi on this.  With that line it did garner some sympathy, but to me his whole vibe came off more of an "I still think I'm right." kind of line rather than not wanting to feel vulnerable or protecting Charlie.  On the surface, besides his outrageous outbursts, there is still evidence that *could* point to Saul, primarily as at this point they don't know Sadie is making up the attack by Saul on her.  He should use that to get Charlie to see his point.  Instead he just throws a tantrum.

This is the biggest plot hole for me. They know that Nate knows something....he's all but admitted he was there. So why, oh why do they not question him more? Even if Jack doesn't think he's capable (and I agree) he obviously can give them more information!

Chucking his notebook was over the top and I was disappointed at this childish behavior.  He should have been sent home at that point in my opinion.

I agree fifi.  I thought Jack's reasoning on why Nate wasn't the one seemed sound (although he doesn't seem sound himself when he's arguing with Charlie)  But that's when they should've come down on Nate for more information.  We've seen Martha go grill a suspect before, why didn't she do it if Jack had already discounted him?

Well Martha certainly is leaning towards taking him off the case after that outburst.  But I guess knowing how good an investigator he is, an asset to the team, she wants to give him one more chance?

Jack was as far from objective in the case as you can get though at this point. and Charlie has to follow his lead... when she tries to tackle him on it, this was the result. They probably would have questioned Nate more if the case hadn't taken on a further twist, with a further victim, and also Nate has a habit if just shutting down, so they seemed to be doing it in a drip by drip fashion - because they wanted more info out if him.

Hmm..that's a good point, whimsy. Martha didn't interview Nate at all did she?!

Still even if he wasn't capable of it (especially given that his clothes were clean) it was clear he knew something about it and was not coming clean.  He was at best a party to it since he wasn't helping with the investigation.  I agree with fifi that this felt like a plot hole. They should have been pressing him harder.  Jack was just sure it was Saul so he wasn't following every avenue as thoroughly as he should I think.

there is something maternal about Martha with jack as well as being the boss, even though she has the conversation with him about taking time out, she is actually really lenient with him and there is a definite sense of her knowing his history (which we still don't at this point) adding to the weight of what that might possibly be, that she is not pulling the rug from under him.

I love her line, "No don't get your keys Charlie, get some shut eye. You [to Jack] get YOUR keys."

It was despicable that jack pulled rank on Charlie, about having three stripes and her having zero, he was quite unlikeable at that point!

II thought this was one of Jack's ploys. Get Nate on side to get more from him.

That's possible  Maybe Jack knew that Nate would choke and not give anything if he pressed him too hard. I couldn't really tell what was going on between Jack and Nate. It was a puzzle to me and still is.

I didnt see it as a plot hole - rather that jack was so focussed on Saul and Charlie had to follow his lead. and before martha stepped in, another victim was found, while Nate was in custody so it couldn't have been him.

The new plot twist certainly ruled Nate out, but yeah, time to put the screws on him!  If nothing else, he was tied to the crime scene by his DNA as a bystander and knows more than he's letting on.  Jack did seem to use that as a ploy, telling Nate he believed him, but then didn't really push any further, which surprised me considering he's usually good at pushing.  But I guess that always goes back to his state of mind, his conviction that Saul is the murderer.  I saw that moment as concrete evidence that his personal feelings WERE affecting his job, regardless of him thinking otherwise.  He let a good interview opportunity go.

I think definitely Jack was determined that it was Saul and wasn't running down everything at that point.
