I can see that fifi, it feels lie he does a lot of tongue biting in this episode... but to me that was all part of the conviction hat he was right about Saul and him trying to exercise patience, waiting for everyone to catch up with him

Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Saul, calm down. I'm taking you to a place of safety. I'm taking you to a place of safety. I'm arresting you for the suspicion of murder.
SH: I want you to arrest me.
JW: You do not have to say anything, but may harm your defence...
SH: Did I kill someone? Did I kill someone?
JW: ..anything you do say may be used in evidence... Saul..
SH: Did I kill someone?
Scene 19 ( 10.59 - 11.55 )
Martha talks to Charlie on the rooftop about why Jack is so 'het up' about Saul and we also hear the full story about Jack's family background.
MB: Basically, Jack's brother was a paranoid schizophrenic. The whole nine yards. He used to hear voices, violent episodes, that sort of thing. Dad couldn't cope. He left Mum and a 19-year-old Jack to cope. And, Jack went out, he went AWOL, came back one night, and his brother had very seriously assaulted his mother. She was in a really, really bad way, as far as I know.
CS: Where's his brother now?
MB: He didn't make it. He topped himself, so...

Dialogue free scene where Jack brings Saul to the front desk.

The detectives point out his DNA isn't on it but her fingerprints are all over it and her DNA on the mouth piece, and Michael's post-mortem shows he is clean. Charlie suggests that Michael found out she was stealing her father's benefits to buy drugs and she argued with him about it and attacked him with a hammer. Carol becomes upset and says she could not hurt her brother.
Scene 23 ( 13.51 - 14.55 )
Still in the interview room with Carol, Charlie plays her the voicemail of her threatening Michael. She defends herself saying she was stressed looking after her father giving him 24 hour care. Charlie responds that she was out all night, so she wasn't giving him 24 hour care.

Charlie says she knows Carol lies all the time but cannot make a connection between her and the first attack. Jack says they need to establish if she attacked her brother first, then try to make a connection between her and Jonathan Moxton.
Despite his feelings about Saul, Jack is.still trying to follow all the leads. He is looking for connections everywhere, particularly if it means he is vindicated
Oh totally, domino! He was very compassionate with Saul at this moment....regardless of Saul's guilt or innocence it seems as though Saul's wellbeing is his main concern.
He was gentle with Saul. I'm not sure if it's because he knows the arrest will go easier that way, if he genuinely feels for Saul or he's relieved that things seem to be finally going his way.

The way Jack tries to calm Saul down when arresting him.. there is a genuine gentleness there.... this is not Jack's aggressive style at all.... Saul being so distressed.. brilliant portrayal by Dominic Power, Jack knows exactly what to say to him...
You can love a person and still hate what that person does. You can see a paranoid schizophrenic who's off his meds and feel compassion, but still believe he's a killer.

TJ we only find that out later on, at this point we do not know about Jack's brother just that he has family history of mental illness. But this scene gives a very visceral sense of how close the issue was to him.. and how familiar Saul's condition is to him?
