I have just watched the first 2 episodes. Oh my goodness! I'm not sure I have words yet. If you thought ep 8 of series 2 was mind-blowing tv, then episode 2 of series 3 surpasses that!
Conspicuously absent from the episode were Detective Inspector Jedediah Shine and Det. Constable Albert Flight, after we found out the truth about them in series two. Damien Molony previously suggested there were ‘a lot of possibilities’ open to his character, while we had hoped the villainous Shine would somehow return. A lot may have happened in the previous four years, but we’re still not sure exactly what went down.
There are still another 6 episodes and these first two have shown that the writers are capable of a multitude of twists and shocks! So anything could happen! I'm not ruling anything out yet.
It would be amazing Rosie, but I am not holding out hope. However...
Spoiler
After the end of episode 2, what will happen to Reid? Go on the run? Maybe he will join Flight! *dreams*
Dzasti, it was SO exciting to see Damien on an already quality drama, the only downside being that the three lead format is unlikely to change and most of the other characters are therefore not seen much - perhaps Damien's talents were under used. I see him very much as a leading man.
At least they haven't completely ignored the events of 4 years ago; there are veiled references to something which caused a rift between Jackson and Reid and Drake leaving for Manchester. As more gets revealed about what has happened in the intervening years perhaps we will at least find out what happened to Flight even if we don't see him again.
Damien's talents were perhaps under used in Ripper Street but what he did do was magnificent! And it introduced Damien to a whole new audience; look how his career has taken off since then.
That's true Rosie, and of course he was magnificent! Agree that Ripper Street did introduce him to a hew audience but his career has not stopped taking off from the beginning (probably why he landed the Ripper Street role). I do still see Damien as leading man material though
Damien's character suffered a little by being directly compared to the much loved (rightly) Hobbs, and for existing fans, Flight betraying the characters they know and love did not make him a particularly popular character, which perhaps blinded the established audience from seeing the intrigue and ambiguity of Flight, and that he is far from being simply a 'baddie'! and as Damien himself said, there were lots of possibilities still open for Flight, it feels wrong to cut that potential short - it didn't feel like the end of his story at the end of series 2 more like the beginning!
Plus - it feels a little churlish to say this, but the Damien fandom were a part of the campaign to get Ripper Street back, so it would feel right that at least a Flight mention could be written in the the new episodes!
I definitely agree that the end of series 2 felt like the beginning for Flight, domino. Suddenly cocky, stroppy, eye-rolling Flight was full of a multitude of shades of light and dark. As an established Ripper Street fan I loved the character of Flight! His moral ambiguity was what made him such an interesting character. The three main characters are just as morally ambiguous so for me I didn't resent Flight for his betrayal. I saw Flight as a pawn in a much bigger game; he was completely out of his depth. I think the only wholly innocent character in Ripper Street was angelic Hobbs!
I only became aware of Damien as Flight so for me his career trajectory seems to have been meteoric in the past year!
I guess all we can do is be patient and hope the scriptwriters realise how much the fans want to see Flight again. As I say, another 6 episodes and anything could happen. I think the whole world would hear the forumer's squees if we do see him!
Haven't actually watched any of the new series yet (just realised that litereally the only thing I've seen on tv in the last 2 weeks or so is Dr Who....haven't seen a single christmas ad yet this year!) but, considering how busy Damien has been this year - and how many goodies we've got to look forward to (and I agree completely that Damien should be playing leads!) - I'm surprised by just how disappointed I am that it seems there won't be any Flight in this series.
We probably were more focussed on (obsessed by!) Flight than most of the RS audience, but I totally agree with every word from that metro article. Trying to look past the fact that it was Damien........to create a character as complex as Flight and not give that character a chance to develop further seems senseless - and, even acknowledging that fact that it was Damien, it certainly could be argued that he was just starting to get really interesting when s2 ended! And however unpopular or otherwise Flight might have been...surely Shine was the most excellent villian? I still find it unfathomable that s2 would end as it did without there being some sort of follow-up.....I still can't believe that there won't be any resolution to their stories even though I can't see how Damien could have possibly been able to spend any time filming......
I thought Shine was the most glorious villain too, fifi. It does seem impossible that such a huge storyline would have no resolution. I still think that something will be discovered as the series goes on.
You must check out the new series if you have time, fifi. It's better than ever (well as good as it can be without Flight!)
fifi and Rosie, In terms of loose ends after series 2, it would be easier to guess away Shine's fate than Flight's. (He was pretty horrifically injured).
But...The Ripper Street writers are excellent, I just cannot see it not being addressed within the Ripper Street world, after all, Emily Reid was mentioned in both series 2 even though she did not star and already series 3, Hobbs was mentioned in series 2 (albeit fleetingly)
I would be more surprised if there were no mention of what happened with the whole case, the crime they uncovered, including what happened to Flight and Shine, than if there were... if that makes sense.
Dzasti, I'm afraid I am not aware of any.. Amazon Prime UK appears to not have subtitles :/
But maybe if there is a particular bit you cannot understand you could ask us here? Not sure if that helps!
I need subtitles (polish, english, french or spanish) because a few years ago I become deaf. American movies or tv programmes have subtitles very quickly with other it's no so good. And "Suspects" have only english ones (good there are subtitles to this series!!!)
Dzasti, I'm sorry I only just saw your reply, and for misunderstanding your request for subtitles. it is unacceptable that Amazon do not provide a subtitled service for hearing impaired customers! So freaking wrong. This article suggests they have been made aware of the issue and at least offers a little hope: www.techdigest.tv/2014/05/comedian_mark_t.html
I really hope one of the many subtitle websites puts up subtitles for the new series soon.
That is terrible that there aren't subtitles on Amazon. Surely it wouldn't be difficult for them to sort this out. Fingers crossed this happens soon, Dzasti.
Dare I ask, but what does anyone think of the new constable? He's no Hobbs and he's certainly no Flight but he's quite cute. In the first episode he didn't get a line for the first forty minutes but he seems like he's starting to become quite integral to the investigations. He seems to be clever with quite a strong personality. Not sure where his story will go though. But watching him makes me sad because for every scene he is in I am reminded that Flight would have been there if things were how the Molonians want it to be!
Still no subtitles :( I don't like it :(
I lost my hearing, but I won the battle with cancer. And I lost my hearing in good times ;) where thre are moblile phones with messages, movies and tv programmes with subtitles, computers, internet etc. ;)

That's a brilliantly positive attitude you've got Dzasti. No subtitles on Amazon is really crap! At least the BBC will have them when it airs - not that it really makes up for Amazon - especially as they're going to cut some out. I wonder if the Amazon version will be released on DVD.....or if the BBC will release a full version (which will presumably have subtitles too.)
Well, I've finally watched the first 3 episodes....and I've got to say that this series is the best yet! (yes...even though there isn't any Damo!) My critism of the first 2 series is that they were slow to get started....with more emphasis on the storylines for each individual episode....and then the last few eps took off and the series ended just as it was taking off. So far this series has set up a good strong series arc which is really pulling me in.....can't wait to see the next ep. But yes - just think how mindblowingly fantastic it would be with Flight in there too....
So many incredible things have happened already in this series I just don't know where the scriptwriters are going to take it next! Episode 4 is just as exceptional - there were tears, gasps of shock, squirms of too much goriness!
