There's a thread through the rest of this ep that is very observable in these scenes... on the one hand Jack expresses himself in a hard done by manner, as if he has done nothing wrong, yet he is on his absolute best behaviour from now on. And there are lots of little looks, asides, moments. He is fully aware that he has bent the rules a little...
Yes, this!
There is the genuine intrigue of the case, and the desire to want to see it solved and justice done, but the fact that this story line included this secondary plot - and the secondary plot in ep1 & 2 with family history of mental illness affecting Jack's judgment - pushed S2 far above and beyond S1.
(and they said they wouldn't really follow the lives of the detectives. sneaky character building... )

Jozie I agree he is acting externally as if he has done nothing wrong. but he knows he has, his own expressions give him away, and being on best behaviour. His knowing there is something brewing for him from Martha's direction underlines (silently) his every conversation with her from here on in.
Jack's walking on thin ice...and he knows it. Although he did nothing to hurt Shaffer, he was still in the wrong.....and he's very careful not to make things worse for himself by being too much on the defensive
Yes Whimsy, they said they wouldn't follow the lives of the detectives but it seems they changed something on the way. But there's good amount of personal life following material in Suspects. :)
What I was saying before....about being taken off the case - he had motive and opportunity...if he wasn't in the police, they would be pulling him in for questioning....
true! the interruptions were well timed in his favour fifi!
perhaps he was just in denial about this and thought it would go away or he could blag his way out of it?
I kept expecting him to come straight with Martha at some point. It seems like (off the record) he might have confided in her. Would have relieved the suspicions on him (from her). She's used to mopping up when he goes too far, but I think she does it because she knows his intentions are good. In the end here, she still does mop up for him. But I think she's so fed up with him by the end because he kept lying to her.

I think he had good hopes that they will not found out. He was so awkward when Martha did. Voice that escaped from his lips when he tried to answer and long silence after that tells me that he did not expect Martha to find out! :o
The next day in the main office, Jack tells Martha he has been going through missing persons files all night and found Andrew Gatting 13 years old has been missing for 3 days, who Martha and Charlie say is definitely the child in the abuse video.
Scene 14 ( 09.55 - 11.23 )
Jack and Charlie visit Andrew's Mum Tracy, who is reluctant to let them in, tells them Andrew is not here and if they find him to tell him to come home, then shuts the door on them. Jack knocks again and the two detectives enter the flat, Tracy is vague about where her son is but that he has definitely been home as he has raided the fridge, he took his scarf and drank her whisky. Jack tells her that Andrew has been a victim of sexual assault and she needs to come down to the station with them.
Scene 15 ( 11.24 - 12.16 )
Martha interviews a distraught Tracy, who tells her that when she last saw Andre they had argued, because he had taken money from her purse, but then she thought he had gone to school. She begs Martha to find him.
Scene 16 ( 12.17 - 12.43 )
Martha and Jack discuss the case in Martha's office, jack points out that Andre has not been seen for 3 days and that there is already one dead man from the video. Charlie comes in to tell them uniform have spotted a homeless man in a park wearing a scarf matching the description of Andre's .
Scene 17 ( 12.44 - 13.22 )
Charlie and Jack arrive at the park, when they approach the homeless man (Jeff) wearing Andre's scarf he runs away from them. They chase and catch up to him as he falls on the ground. On searching his bags, Charlie finds a near empty bottle of whisky. Jack arrests him on suspicion of child abduction.
Scene 18 ( 13.22 - 13.54 )
Martha interview Tracy again, showing here a photo of Jeff. who she doesn't recognise. She becomes upset seeing a photo of Edward, recognising him as the paedophile "on the news".
Scene 19 ( 13.55 - 15.28 )
Jack and Charlie interview Jeff (solicitor present) who claims he does not know where Andre is and that he has his school bag and scarf because Andre left them with him "for safe keeping". He tells them Andre had a job handing out leaflets about a missing dog, but he didn't return to him in the park. Jeff didn't alert the police because he was scared they'd pull him in.
Scene 20 ( 15.29 - 16.14 )
At the suspects board, Jack reports to Martha and Charlie that tech have enhanced the audio of the abuse footage and in the background a call to prayer could be heard, each mosque had its own unique call to prayer so he is going to investigate the local mosques. Charlie shows them some missing dog leaflets that have been found in the park where Jeff was picked up, presumably used by the paedophile ring to draw Andre away from the park.
Scene 21 ( 16.15 - 17.46 )
Charlie interviews Jeff again, who, they have discovered, used to be a teacher. Jeff confirms that the dog leaflet is the same on Andre went off to deliver, but he did not see the person who gave him the leaflets. Jeff left his teaching job after being accused of "inappropriate behaviour" with a pupil, but he explains he was wrongly accused and lost everything, becoming homeless as a result.
Jack doesn't think what he has done is wrong so I agree he probably hoped it would go away - if they solve the crime then perhaps nobody would bring it up again
