Since his first donation in July 2012, Damien has been actively raising awareness of the importance of blood donation and inspiring his Twitter followers to ‘save a life give blood’ by ‘ReTweet’ing post-donation photos sent to him.
His own inspiration for beginning to give blood three years ago was a personal one:
When I was filming the first series of Being Human someone very close to me died. David had cancer and was losing a lot of blood. To keep him alive while he was receiving treatment, he needed two pints of blood a day. I was genuinely amazed that people who had never met David were keeping him alive with their donated blood.” source
And has words of gratitude and encouragement for other donors after his own experience of donating:
I know it can seem scary at first and I don’t like needles either, but it really couldn’t be easier.” source
I am very grateful to my followers on Twitter who have given blood or have started giving blood since I started tweeting about it. I made the obvious connection with playing a vampire in Being Human, a blood addict giving blood. So now I have a deal with my followers: I will re-tweet everyone that has donated blood and tweets me a photo.” source

I'm glad to see he hasn't abandoned such a worthy cause. And now thanks to my botched one last month, he's going to be ahead of me on # of pints!

Must be posher biscuits now... I remember they gave those small biscuit packets (the ones with 2 digestives, 2 custard creams, 2 shortbread or 2 bourbons)... Lemon or Orange Squash, and could have crisps instead but not both... 😜
There is a minimum 12 week interval required between blood donations, 16 weeks for females. With a total of 9 donations in 3 years, Damien has done really well!
