Suspects Series 4 Premiere Synopsis
The new series kicks off with a tough and tense investigation for the top CID team 1 when they face a missing persons case. The opening episode delivers a gripping storyline with the hallmark twists and turns Suspects has become known for.
Check out the detailed synopsis below. (Fair warning: the following contains episode spoilers!)
Suspects Series 4 Episode 1 ‘AWOL’ synopsis. When a soldier fails to turn up to his motherʼs funeral, the team launch a missing persons investigation. Martha and Jack are called to a rooftop protest to talk an emotional Ken Baxter (Rupert Proctor, ʻCriminal Justiceʼ, ʻComplicitʼ) out of doing something drastic. Ken is worried about his son Pete, an army Lance Corporal who has been missing for a week. Ken buried his wife two days ago and is convinced that Pete would not have missed the funeral unless something was very wrong.
Charlie learns from the army that Pete is suffering from PTSD following a harrowing incident on his last tour of duty. Fears for the soldierʼs safety increase when the police receive an anonymous message claiming that “the missing soldier is dead”. Has Pete taken his own life?
Jack talks to Caitlin Neames (Polly Eachus) and Eddie Mulville (James Harkness), two of Peteʼs army pals who were out with him on the night before he disappeared. They confirm that Pete was in an odd mood that night, but they do not know where he went afterwards or where he is now. Or so they say…
Charlie tracks down Sophie West (Cassie Bradley), the third pal out with Pete that night and a former girlfriend of his. She is just about to question her when Sophie becomes the target of a deliberate hit-and-run… Channel 5
Suspects Series 4 Premiere Press
Ahead of the premiere, the new series is already receiving well deserved press buzz. Numerous publications praise the actors’ performances and the show’s fresh, semi-improvised, fly on the wall format which has established Suspects as a standout amongst police procedurals.
Damien Molony and Fay Ripley are among the actors who devise much of their own dialogue, making it feel more like an episode of 24 Hours in Police Custody than a drama. Maybe True Detective could take a leaf out of Channel 5’s book? You heard it here first.”
The Telegraph single out Damien as “the standout performer” and describe the show an “underrated gem of a crime drama”, also applauding the improvised dialogue and format:
This gives the police procedural a gritty sense of realism and natural spontaneity, strengthened by the wobbly camerawork and naturalistic feel.”
The List gives the Series 4 premiere a glowing review, calling Suspects “The best original programme Channel 5 has ever produced.”
