Character Profile: Anthony is preparing to get married to Kate. However, he's been sitting on his feelings for Lulu his whole adult life, as she has for him. He's trying to be good, but will it end well?
Favourite band: "His girlfriend’s would be Mumford & Sons, so he’d probably choose Mumford & Sons as well." *
Favourite food: A spicy curry
Quote of the series (so far): "It's not moving and it's looking right at me"
Damien Molony on Anthony
I am engaged to Louise’s character Kate and we’re in a very happy, very pleasant relationship. Then my great childhood friend, Lulu, comes to say with us and that throws a spanner in the works slightly. *
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (writer and co-star) on Anthony:
He’s cool, intelligent, knows what he wants, has an interesting job, yet he has so many insecurities and fears. He can’t make a decision for fear of making the wrong one.*
Anthony is this kind of brooding, cool guy, who thinks he has it all down. He’s got a place to live, a girlfriend who loves him and a job that he’s passionate about even though it’s not really going anywhere. And he is somebody who can’t make a decision for himself. So is actually much less in control than he gives away. *
It should say that he's rather cowardly because that's how Damien said the character was described to him but as our discussions about the final episode have shown Anthony is a lot more complex than that.
Yes, Damien said in the Irish Indy interview Phoebe told him Antony was a coward. But as you say Rosie there are more layers to him than that so it is hard to give a finite personality profile!
At the top of this thread, there are quotes from Phoebe on Anthony that give her advice to DaMo a bit more depth.
"He’s cool, intelligent, knows what he wants, has an interesting job, yet he has so many insecurities and fears. He can’t make a decision for fear of making the wrong one."
"Anthony is this kind of brooding, cool guy, who thinks he has it all down...he is somebody who can’t make a decision for himself. So is actually much less in control than he gives away."
In the series finale, Jessica also describes Anthony as:
Imagine if Channel 4 gave us some Crashing merch, including the 'We Don't Give A Fork' T-shirts!!!!
It looks like Anthony's taste in music extends beyond Mumford & Sons..!
Anthony's T-shirts were also a prop - cleverly used to show how more compatible and alike he and Lulu were, because she ended up wearing (at least?) two of them. Also a prop in the topless episode...
which brings us (inevitably) to...
Anthony looks pretty good out of his T-shirts too....
I laughed at Jessica's description of Anthony. She always says things out loud that other people would keep to themselves! Jessica's comment about what she believes everyone does to everyone in the end I would imagine that Anthony would be on her list! It sounds like she's been fantasizing about him!
Anthony's t-shirts were amazing. And he looked very good both in and out of them! Those gifs are so hypnotic. There are some good Irish links too in those t-shirt choices. Two Door Cinema Club and Thin Lizzy both have Irish links. A We Don't Give A Fork T-shirt would be incredible!
I must admit I found his tee-shirts fascinating, I was always trying to see exactly what they showed. My favourite, though, were the "I don't give a fork" ones. I was vaguely surprised at the Thin Lizzy ones, but mainly because I am surprised that they are still talked about, wasn't it the eighties when they disbanded? I used to have all their records (showing my age there).
There's a rather interesting contradiction in the statement "....he knows what he wants....He can't make a decision...." which kind of sums Anthony up for me. In his head he knows that staying with Kate, getting married, buying a house etc....are all sensible, grown up things to do. But his heart wants to throw caution to the wind, turn his back on adult responsibility and embrace the chaos that is Lulu. He's not prepared to risk leaving the security which Kate represents without getting some sort of commitment from Lulu....but surely Lulu's defining feature is her lack of responsibility - if Lulu offered him a sense of security would she be so appealing to him? In much the same way as when Kate threw caution to the wind with her topless paint throwing he stopped her....despite his assertion that he wanted her to be more spontaneous. I think he thinks he knows what he wants but what he thinks he wants isn't what he really wants and he doesn't really want to think about what he really wants - Maybe what he really wants to do is to sing....man!! (sorry!)
There is something inherently selfish, self centered and rather childish about Anthony. His fear of making the wrong decision leads him to not really consider the feelings of those around him.....he is very much the centre of his own world. He may like to think he's cool (hence the t-shirts?) but when things don't go his own way he's inclined to throw a tantrum - which isn't particularly cool! And I think that he feels that he doesn't have any control over his own life, which is why he tries to control other people's.
Jessica's description amuses me - I don't want to disagree with her.....but I do suspect that there are many other men that she would give the same attributes....
Fifi, you've hit the nail on the head! This is the most thoroughly accurate character study of Anthony I've read.
I think Jessica was being a bit facetious to point out Kate's overreaction.
