"Molony is a good-looking fella, but not in an alarmingly handsome way, which means he has a chameleon quality that allows him to disappear into his characters."
He's not matinée-idol handsome, which means he is not limited to the roles he plays by his looks. A hairstyle can make all the difference!
I do think he "disappears" into his characters in that he becomes them. You don't watch him and think "Oh, that's Damien Molony playing Damien Molony again" you watch him and realise this is the same man who played Hal in Being Human, Flight in Ripper Street, Danny in Clean Break, Jack in Suspects and Anthony in Crashing. All widely different roles, all different interpretations.
I do think Damien is good looking (is there anyone here who doesn't?) But that doesn't define him - I love listening to his poetry readings and plays, when I can't see him at all.
I know what you mean Becca! I'd have to disagree with the first part of the sentence. His good looks are very alarming, at all times. Thud alert warnings are needed and everything. But the "chameleon quality that allows him to disappear into his character" is a very astute observation I think. the highest compliment to give an actor is it not? To disappear entirely from view and just be the character? Also chameleon like in his range I feel. Even just within Anthony... the range of expression..

Well said Ellie, I was writing my reply as you were replying and missed your post. We may have to agree to differ on your first sentence but love your thoughts on Damien not being defined by his looks:
"I do think Damien is good looking (is there anyone here who doesn't?) But that doesn't define him - I love listening to his poetry readings and plays, when I can't see him at all."
He is good looking and very thuddable but I agree that he's good looking in an approachable way. He's not perfect looking which makes him more attractive if that makes sense! And as an actor, the fact that he can be a chameleon is a real benefit. He can totally inhabit his characters and makes them utterly believable as a character rather than as Damien playing a character. It's his ability to make us feel all the feelings for his characters that makes him all the more attractive.
This is a great article! And I think the chameleon comment is spot on... I get the impression that the writer is totally familiar with Damien's work and must've been mortified by the Aidan/Hal mix-up. I saw on twitter that she apologised to Damien that it had been 'cut down because of space'....which probably explains how that mix-up happened - but also means there was more!!!! What could possibly have been important enough to have cut down a Damo interview for?!?? She must've been quite disappointed to have her article reduced....but probably not as much as I am!!
The only comment that I would take issue with is "Jack is.....very sexy, too - a sharp contrast to the uptight vampire Hal"
I liked the that there was much of his personal life in this article, how he started all this and now he is here. Reading this made me smile (good thing that Molonians noticed the little error in the text about Hal, but luckily it was a small error) And she's right, he has been going from success to success. I really can't think where he will be after 5 years from now. He's career has been very upright all the time and when I think about how long he actually have been acting and how much he has accomplished.. Just wow
Fantastic article and brilliant that Anne has put it on her website. Loved that Damien asked his brother for cheffy tips! I also love that he gets butterflies even thinking about acting, he's so lucky that he gets to work doing something that he really loves.
Just lovely! The full article is so well written, capturing Damien's genuine personality. The way the article was edited on the Irish Independent made him sound a bit like a country bumpkin! But when you read what they edited out, you see more what the spirit of the interview sought to capture, that he really is lovely, gracious, modest, quiet. Qualities that are sadly lacking in most of the industry. Qualities that make him so likeable, beyond his characters and acting abilities. Everyone who ever comes in contact with him - work colleagues, fans, interviewers - are enchanted by him. And he doesn't let it get to his head. I love hearing more about him as a person, those little glimpses into what makes him so unique. To know things like he still gets butterflies just makes me love him more.
Although I disagree about him not being alarmingly handsome. He doesn't exactly have average, boy next door looks. His looks do have a chameleon quality - just a shave and change in hairstyle and wow how different does he look! But it is his innate talent - his expressiveness, his ability to shift his accent or the way he stands or add little mannerisms - that really morph him into another person. Little tidbits like him asking his brother how a real chef operates. Or when he played Flight, how he said he read alot about how detectives operate, like always looking around the room... He infuses realism, depth and nuance into his characters. There's never a point where I've watched him and thought of him as just playing another version of himself. (There are some very famous actors that I feel do just that!) He has such a dynamic range. And lucky for us, he's only just begun to explore it.
Sorry I know I'm just gushing about him, all things we fans already know. I just am so happy when he does interviews, when he gets the recognition he deserves, not only for his acting, but also as a lovely human being.

You're welcome fifi, all thanks to Anne for making it available.. it is so much more in depth and has all those extra bits, including the whole section on Crashing, which as you say, has delightful new "nuggets of insight" into Anthony's character.
I find Damien very alarmingly handsome by the way, but must admit when I read the article for the first time I thought the chameleon quality was referring to his acting talent, not his looks. For me, the external appearance of range comes from the inside... Damien's range of expression, expressed from within through just the eyes, face, not even a word, is what grabbed my attention about him as an actor in the first place, and still does. It is there in every role, it's so authentic.
The costumes i wonder we're they his own clothes cause I loved the varied tshirt s he wore and there is actually a restaurant called We Don't Give A Fork
