Very excited to be seeing our first Damien interview for Suspects Series 5, it is thrilling to hear him talk about the new series. He confirms what we all suspected a while ago.. the new series is a 6 part story told across 6 episodes!
Apparently the video is country restricted, sorry to all our non UK forumers!
I had to use the VPN in order to access the video. Damien interviews are always such a treat, to see him as himself and to hear him talking excitedly about his projects. Am thrilled to hear him say that their back stories will be filtered through the investigation, adding depth and texture and that the story will arch throughout the whole series. I know that the stand alone episodes was one of the formulas that made Suspects stand out against other crime dramas, but I think that in order for the show to have longevity it needed to move into this direction. You need to have characters to connect to and it's difficult to have that if there is never any backstory or glimpses into personal lives.
Only 4 days, 21 hrs, 26 min, 30 secs to go... 29, 28, 27, 26...

Suspects stands out from other crime shows due to its improv, fly on the wall format and contained in the sense that their personal lives are not exposed in any way. In the interview Damien says we see inside their houses, find out more about their backstories but only as part of the investigation, which is soooo clever.. making us the detectives spotting clues where we can! It's an exciting boundary to be explored. I personally hope they never go completely over it and Suspects maintains its special, standout USP. I find following each detective in the investigation and the dynamic and tensions within the team enough to keep me invested in the characters, but these golden nuggets are an important part of that too. I hope we also see more rooftop chats in the new series!
We have had two-parters in previous series, but the six episode extended storyline def gives an opportunity for a larger story arch, how exciting!
Suspects series 3 and 4 is due out on DVD in America in September, according to Amazon.com. Hopefully it will be available here then, too!
Suspects S3 & 4 are already available on DVD in the US Ellie, via Acorn TV. Not wanting to take this thread off topic or take the attention away from this exciting interview, we're talking about the DVD over here
Love this little gem........I love the fact it exists, but I also love what it says. It sounds like suspects is taking a huge evolutionary step forwards and I'm really excited to see where its going! After s4 we talked a bit about where we'd like to see them take the series....how the format could be developed....and this is starting to feel like my wish list has been answered!!
